The Lighthouse Customer: World Of Diving

One word. One syllable. Sounds like: DARRRRRRRRK!

Each Monday, Chris Livingston visits an early access game and reports back with stories about whatever he finds inside. This week, sharks, shoals, and silence with World of Diving.

When you start playing World of Diving you’re invited to vote on the next feature you’d like the developers to add. Most players have voted for a metal detector for treasure hunting. The second most-popular choice is an advanced camera. Least popular: an in-game chat feature. Frankly, I’d be happy if chat never gets added. While it can be great to talk to other players, I think there’s something to be said for a game that allows just a few friendly gestures and plenty of blessed silence.

Gamescom 2014 Verdict: Diversity, Doom And Automatons

The megabooths have been disassembled, the lanyards have been discarded and the crowds have dissipated – Gamescom has run its course for another year. RPS sent its two best Smiths to Cologne last week. Their brief was to see the games, talk to the creators and meet as many terrifying mechanical puppets as possible. They succeeded on all fronts and returned with tales of Elite: Dangerous, Pathologic, Warhammer and Dead Island, among many other delights and disappointments. Here are their thoughts on the show as a whole, along with a few highlights.

No Thank You: World Of Diving Goes Deep Down

No I'm fine, thanks.

World of Diving had, until now, looked so very merry. Sparkling blue embraced reefs swarming with neon fish, and sweet air was only a few metres above our heads. Turns out, it’s not a cheery diving sim but actually a dreadful horror game. The last update added the wreck of the SS Yongala, lying in 30 metres of water. That might not sound deep, but it may as well be a mile as far as I’m concerned. Have a peek at the accompanying trailer and see if you too pull an appalled face when you see the sharks circling between the diver and the dim, distant daylight.

Fathoming A Snorkel: World Of Diving Footage

Vertigo Games send word that their scuba-fancier’s paradise, World Of Diving, now has some gameplay footage. According to the devs it shows players “enjoying the virtual fish, flora and fathoms of ocean.” You can see that below. If it is possible to enjoy fathoms. “This depth is excellent!”

The game, which they’ve been energetically promoting over on IndieGoGo, has raised just $14k of it’s $75k target, so perhaps this glimpse of a new life under the sea will push some folks into signing up.

World Of Diving Has To Keep Swimming

World Of Diving claims to be “the first online multiplayer diving game”. I say “claims to be” because I am sure I played an online multiplayer diving game before, but Google can’t conjure it for me, and therefore it does not exist. Anyway, I’ve always felt that deliberately going underwater with sharks was one of those things that was best left to Not Real Life, and so videogames seem like the perfect opportunity to do such insane things without getting gnawed on, or having to breathe salt water or anything. That, at least, gives this game a good reason to exist. But is it $75,000 worth of a reason? I cannot say. Not even with an Oculus Rift strapped to a man’s face.
