Review: Armageddon Empires

My review of Armageddon Empires goes live over at Eurogamer. In which I start like…

There’s something about December that makes me crave turn-based strategy. I don’t know what it is – some kind of deep grained memory that when you can’t go outside it’s time to play boardgames or something. While I’ve been dabbling with everything from Fantasy Wars to (just starting) the New Galacitic Civilization beta, this is what’s been dominating.

Dominating everything.

And then proceed to accelerate towards the end of my word count, and then straight off into space. In short: Aces.

    I gave thedemo of this a go, I liked the backstory and some of the mechanics but ultimately it was just a bit too dry for me.

    Meh personal taste eh.

    by the way how do you get on the Calciv TA beta? I can’t find any linkage

    I just downloaded the demo. Too bad I’ve no time to play it today… Well, at least I’ve got something to look forward to tomorrow.

    You guys really should get some kind of medal from indie and small developers. You allways point me in the direction of low profile titles I’d otherwise miss.

    Okami: Nodding towards stuff to play they may not have is definitely the best thing about RPS for me.

    Piratepete, if you are asking about the beta of the new expansion of GalCiv, i think you have to preorder the game in the Stardock online system.

    Change of plans. I have plenty of time this evening and allready started my first game of AE. Started, got extremely frustrated, quit, went back to the game’s site and downloaded the manual.

    I’ll give it another try in a few minutes. I really liked what I’ve seen so far and I guess I’ll have to bother some friend of mine to give me his credit card number (hey! I’m european, I don’t trust this devil stuff!) so I can buy the full version.

    But honestly: I thought it was against the law to release games with such unintuitive interfaces….

    I had to do quite a few restarts and a good read of the manual before I felt I knew the stuff I needed. Looks like persistence may well pay off, though.

    If anyone’s having problems, I recommend googling up the five-part Dubious Quality tutorials where Bill Harris goes to town.
