Left 4 Dead Trailer

Showing lots of the clever bits of play, like the boss infected doing their stuff, and taking on zombies with dual pistols while you’re incapacitated on the ground. Interview with Chet from Valve coming up next week, where we talk a bit about Left 4 Dead. (But mostly about any old thing.)

  1. John P (Katsumoto) says:

I can’t -pissing- wait for this. I suspect it may involve me even more than Team Fortress 2 did, perhaps due to the co-op element, but i’m suspecting more so due to the zombie element. I -pissing- love zombies.

p.s. good to see the search feature is back! Thanks for the speedy response!

  2. Jachap says:

I understand the necessity of fast zombies in a MP game but its sort of anathema to me.

  3. Larington says:

Looks like it could be very hectic but fun, looking at a number of the comments on the gamestrailers website makes me a sad panda though… Graphics this, graphics that. We seriously need a resurgence of the gameplay is king attitude on the interwebs.

  4. Nuyan says:

Looks like the funniest MP game since TF2, which is not that long ago, of course. But looking forward to this!

  5. born2expire says:

i agree about running zombies, jut why.

this game could be so much better with a max brooks inspired zombie, just mobs that keep coming and the only way to stop them is destroying the brain, ie headshots.

i guess i’ll have to keep holding my breathe for dead island.

  6. Nimic says:

    OMGOMGOMG

That was my initial reaction to L4D. I.. just.. need it..

  7. Stromko says:

Everybody looks so frantic and jerky, the survivors and the zombies and everybody. It gives me the sense the whole thing is running at the wrong speed, kinda giving me second thoughts about Left For Dead for the first time.. just by getting the sense the pace is all /wrong/.

I also wasn’t expecting the zombies to be so fast, and the overall jerkiness of it might be extending from that. Might as well just replace them with velociraptors or demonic imps or something. I guess having them stomp on you when you’re down was (a lot) easier to animate than them trying to feast on your flesh or whatever, though it seemed odd all the same.

Oh sure, it can still be good if the gameplay is good, it’s not like they promised proper zombies. Though when it’s that frantic you can only get a sense of how it really plays when you’re actually at the keys playing it, in my opinion. It’s all about pacing and I can’t get a handle on that just from seeing little snippets.

  8. Jim Rossignol says:

I’ve played it twice now and it was really good fun both times. Experientially it’s a fascinating hybrid between single player and multiplayer – moreso than most other co-op games- because you’re constantly forced to be aware of where everyone else is. It’s stupidly intense.

  9. Kevlmess says:

It does look incredibly jerky and clumsy – not something I’d expect from a Source game, by Valve or not. Hell, most of the stuff in the trailer looks like it could’ve been done in the GoldSrc engine. Previously I was salivating over any media that came out, now I’m quite a bit cautious. Must try it out before buying.

  10. RichPowers says:

The pacing seems perfect when set against “Yakety Sax”…

  11. Nick says:

    Hope it’s moddable.

  12. Jens Arnesen says:

The pacing seems to be the biggest issue people have with this game – and I can’t really do anything but present the same complaint myself: Fast zombies are just… off. They’re not zombies. That’s not what a zombie is. Zombies are slow, and they moan, and they need a good whacking to the head before they stop – Max Brooks was brought up earlier, Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead – that sort of thing. These are more 28 Days Later-type zombies, and I don’t like ’em.

That said, the game looks damn fun. The pacing trades off the zombie-feel for a frantic gameplay, and I’m a big fan of both, so which one gets priority isn’t really that big an issue for me.

  13. Leeks! says:

That trailer has made my position go from “Blind adherent devotion” to “Cautiously optimistic.”

I like the static elements of the visual design, but I’ll agree that the pace and animation (and that horrifically un-zombie music) is a little too Zack Snyder for my preferences. My initial reaction was that the trailer had been sped up by about 20%, or that Valve had lifted the Ragtime cheat from CoD4. I guess not, though.

Still, it’s impossible to make any sound judgments without having played it. Which I still intend to do. A lot.

  14. Dracko says:

I will never understand this reticence towards fast-running zombies. What’s the big deal?

  15. James says:

28 Days Later was the only zombie movie I ever enjoyed, so I seem to be in the minority of folks that would prefer fast zombies. If I want to compare the sort of yawning “Oh, shoot them in the head, take a few seconds to shoot the next in the head” gameplay of fighting HL2’s slow zombies against the blind panic of fighting packs of super fast leapers in Ravenholm? I know which one I would prefer if I wanted frenetic multiplayer.

Although, there is something to be said for a slow horde.

  16. hoohoo says:

go play that snorefest called re4 if you want slow zombies, or wait a month after the release and somebody else without reflexes will make a mod.

  17. Noc says:

I don’t mind zombies that can run – what’s got me worried is how quickly huge groups of them just get mowed down by a few bursts of automatic weapons fire. That and the fact that one of the gameplay videos showed someone TANKING zombies; there were about ten of them grabbling at him for about a minute, and he survived.

Survival games are about not getting caught in a corner; I’m worried that this one will be more of an arcade-y deathmatch shooter and less of a survival game.

  18. sigma83 says:

I think people’s problems with this game stem from their preconceptions on what a zombie shooter _should_ be like and not what Left4Dead actually is.

Fast zombies, slow zombies, massive ammo count, bullet pincher style gameplay, allowing players to move like Neo or forcing them to inch forward to safety, I STILL want to play this game.

Another viewpoint is that the mindless zombie horde is merely a distraction; the real enemies are the player controlled boss zombies.

  19. Saul says:

28 Days Later is the best zombie movie ever made. There, I said it. Fast zombies rule!

  20. Gurrah says:

Oh fuck me those zombies are fast… and there’s a lot of them.

  21. Fat Zombie says:

Although I am also an adherent to the “zombies don’t run” dogma, I am willing to let fast zombies go for the sake of this game, which I am looking forward to very much. Slow zombies are scary; but so are Fast zombies. It’s really more about taste. (And I should know about that)

I reckon this game will be absolutely hilarious. Can’t wait. (Also, don’t know if anyone else noticed, but the zombie growls used a very familiar sound-effect.)

  22. James T says:

Gotta love the undercranked speed. Mute the video, and hum Yakety-Sax over the top — perfection!

edit: Oh, Powers beat me to it. Well played, sir.

Graphically, it’s hideous; hopefully it’ll be plenty fun though.

Also: I ‘lol’ at your deleted ‘Bioshock 2’ article!

  23. Tom says:

come on guys! this game’s gonna rock and you know it!

  24. Stromko says:

I think Sigma83 is pretty much right on the money with what my problem is with the game. I’ve read lots of previews about Left4Dead, but it’s only now that it sinks in that it doesn’t match my expectations of a zombie game at all.

Up until now I’ve just been seeing it as this mostly-co-op zombie game and knew I’d have to try it. It might still be a good game, it might even be a better game, but now I have to think, critically, about the core gameplay to answer whether I not I’ll find it a worthwhile purchase.

In short, I can probably wait for a demo.

  25. MacBeth says:

The problem with fast zombies is that you can’t really envisage staying alive against them in your zombie apocalypse daydreams… you do have those daydreams, right?

  26. Chris says:

I simply must buy this game!

Being an old-school zombie horror fan I too am struggling to adjust to the idea of superfast zombies, but by ‘eck, they sure seem scary!

  27. Nick says:

    James T: That’s perfect!

  28. weegosan says:

i’m going to go out on a servered limb here and say im really not that impressed having watched the video.

  29. Zed says:

I’m still stoked to play it. The game will live or die by its gameplay, and if it’s moddable it’ll really have legs. But yeah, it does look dated, especially in the shadow of something gobsmacking like Crysis.

  30. phuzz says:

James T, you win the internets :)

I love to hate zombies, so any game where I get to mow down hordes of those walking bags of pus gets my thumbs up.

  31. Theory says:

Something must have gone wrong with the video. It actually looks like this.

Also: James T, internet hero of the hour!

  32. Scott says:

I had a dream about Left4Dead last night. Does anyone else have video-game dreams a lot? I do. (After I played Portal I had a lot of really fun dreams involving a portal-gun.) In this one I was running around a terrifying post-apocalyptic cityscape, gunning down (fast) zombies. Then I dreamt that I woke up, and told my girlfriend “I just dreamt that I stayed up playing Left4Dead until 3 in the morning! I’m glad it was a dream because I have to be at work at 8!” and she said “That wasn’t a dream!!!” DUN-DUN-DUN! Then I woke up (for real).

Anyway, this game is going to rule.

  33. Fat Zombie says:

James T, thank you. Now I must find Yakety Sax, and play it on a loop when I eventually buy this game.

  34. poullos says:

I don’t think the speed of zombies will affect the game that much. What will however is: easy, normal, hard and…intense.
This is what makes the whole difference. The whole game circles around the ‘different experience’ every time you play it. Nothing will ever be the same. This time the AI director attacks here, next time you get ambushed there.
I love valve games but I don’t know if I can drop TF 2 for anything. ;p

  35. Mike says:

So, the video is dead, yes?

  36. Leeks! says:

I think whoever said that the problem is that this trailer isn’t demonstrating what we think a zombie game should look like is pretty close to the money (Sorry I didn’t weed back through the comments to find your name, you know who you are). After some consideration of this, ‘d like to offer some contention, however: I don’t think it looks how we want a survival game to look, and that’s the real problem.

The fast pace, zombie mobs, plentiful ammo and music that sounds more like we should be mowing down Nazis all indicate a hell-of fun, bombastic, exploding zombie fest. Which is all well and good, don’t get me wrong, but still not really the reason I play games with monsters in them.

If I want to feel all powerful, manly and not so much like the Beta male I am, nearly every first person shooter ever is designed to slake exactly that impulse. The fun of survival games (for me, anyway) come from feeling vulnerable. From getting by on my cleverness over my reflexes.

When I first heard of Left 4 Dead and its focus on small team play, my immediate assumption was that it would have a slower, soberer pace than, say, Call of Duty 4 for exactly this reason.

So it doesn’t look like a bad game at all. In fact, I’m sure it’ll be an outrageously fun game with loads of clever ideas. It just doesn’t look like the game I’ve been waiting years for (which is, admittedly, just Condemned with multiplayer).

  37. MisterBritish says:

Holy crap, someone from Valve needs to see that video!

    RPS, make it so!

  38. sigma83 says:

then again, diluting tf2 playerbase? Or extending market share?

  39. tom says:

What happened to the vid guys?

  40. Piratepete says:

I am more excited about this game than the possibility of life in the universe. But I am a Zombie nutter tbh.

  41. Winterborn says:

    Video is gone.

  42. Zombie Games says:

I’m very excited about the zombie game Left 4 Dead, unfortunately your video is missing. :P
