Dismembers Only: Merchants Of Brooklyn

What will Brooklyn look like in 3100AD? According to the guys over a Paleo Entertainment it will be a cartoony combat game, with shades of Duke Nukem, crossed with Chronicles Of Riddick, all rendered in the CryEngine 2. Yes, Merchants Of Brooklyn is as weird as it sounds. The first person action game features heads being popped with robot energy fists, your arm geting torn off by a giant punk-monster, and other stuff that will definitely be happening in Brooklyn in 1090 years time. I’ve posted the astonishingly violent trailer after the jump.

YouTube compression makes it a bit nob, so you might want to watch the HD version, which shows all that maiming with crystal clarity.

  1. Okami says:

At last some developers who still remember what made video games great in the first place!

  2. MetalCircus says:

Is that sarcasm Okami? Anyway, this game acctually looks like heaps of fun! This also reminds me of my dream game; a Cyberpunk sandbox FPSRPG that has more in line with comicbooks than the depressing dystopian realism of Deus Ex. Ho hum. The things i’d be willing to do to be a games designer. :(

  3. Okami says:

No sarcasm involved in any way. Though I hope that this is a very early build and that they’re going to fix all those graphical glitches. Oh and being a game designer is overrated, by the way. They usually spend all their day staring at excell sheets, adjusting stupid numbers…

  4. Radiant says:

    Oh my god.

  5. Barky says:

Can’t really go wrong with exploding heads, can you?

  6. Bobsy says:

Er…. what did I just witness exactly?

  7. Schmung says:

Looks rather glitchy and crude, but admirably bonkers and entertaining. Like a very sill, sci-fi version of Xeno Clash. Jolly promising.

  8. qrter says:

    Looks like fun.

  9. Ian says:

I don’t what that is, but it’s beautiful.

  10. A:\Big.bat says:

Looks ugly as sin in motion. A pity, the screenshots and description sounded fun; can’t imagine this is going to turn many heads. Squish them, yes.

  11. dhex says:

for a cryengine 2 game it looks kinda…old? or flat, maybe.

  12. Captain Baseballbat-Boy says:

what is this i dont even.

  13. bansama says:

I don’t know, I certainly would love to try a demo if one gets released.

  14. Nighthood says:

It does look quite simple for a cryengine game, but when you look at the animations, explosions and physics you can see it has a powerful engine begind it.

  15. noexes says:

Yea, it didn’t look that detailed, but there was a lot of good environmental destruction going on that was impressive. CryEngine isn’t going completely to waste, especially if the developmental tools help them make the game cheaper and better. And yea, it could stand to look more lush but the art ain’t that bad. I’m looking forward to it.

Also, using gibs as grenades is brilliant.

  16. Evil Vitamin C says:

That’s just wicked sick, this shit.

Must buy for my ultra-manly PC. And the perfect companion for MadWorld on my slightly less manly Wii.

  17. Gap Gen says:

I think turning body parts into grenades is probably the finest innovation the FPS has made in the last five years.

  18. A:\Big.bat says:

Meh, those zombies in Quake were doing it years ago

  19. Vandelay says:

I’ll add my support to exploding body parts. And squishing heads so eyes pop out is always full of fun (and in game)

The graphics look quite bizarre, a sort of cell shading in an engine that isn’t really designed for cell shading. I think the cartoony look might have been better achieved if they had of gone with a TF2/Pixar look to it. Then again, even in videos it is sometimes tough to really capture the look of a game and this is probably an early build, so it may turn out to be a successful art direction. At the very least it will be unique.

  20. Gap Gen says:

    A:\Big.bat: I mean other people’s body parts.

  21. Lars Westergren says:

Gameplay looks rather Unreal Tournament-ish, and ultraviolence is hardly a unique selling point these days. What else does it offer? (Please don’t say “boobs”.)

  22. Ben Abraham says:

Was that a piss take of Gears of War?! Right at the end with the blood splattering the screen. I think it might have been! =D

    phuzz says:

    Inspired lunacy…
Reminded me of Serious Sam, in terms of obviously being more about fun that anything else. Oh, and I liked the graphics so ner. :p

  24. Tei says:

I think Duke Nukem Forever is a the paradise from our civilization has ben banned. And this games could be a short and linear visit to something that will smell and feel somewhat like a ..lets use a religious inspired word… epiphany (i dont know what a epiphany is, but sounds awesome) of Duke Nukem Forever.
*searching epiphany in the wikipedia*.. . oh!.. so mean this?, ok… This game could be a epiphany of the lost paradise: Duke Nukem Forever.

  25. Ceremony says:

This is pretty much what Brooklyn is like now

  26. Hajimete no Paso Kon says:

    Release date?

  27. Diogo Ribeiro says:

First thing that comes to mind is Skeleton Krew; in particular, the game’s technorganic, cartoonish visuals. But it’s certainly meaty and stylish in a way to move away from that. Is that cel-shaded?

  28. PHeMoX says:

Sick style, great gameplay, a little weak on the animations at times, but dayum … certainly a game I am going to follow closely. When’s it going to be released???

  29. Tei says:

@Diogo Ribeiro: Good find, It really looks like this. To me.

  30. DSX says:

Watched it with the sound off (work) and it seems pretty much like UT with nice shot of that “Going Postal” game that was out a while back. Maybe it means I’m getting old, but this doesn’t attract in the slightest.

  31. Kieron Gillen says:

I laughed surprisingly hard at the bit where you punch the guy in the face, you pull back your hand, and the whole thing has caved in.

That’s the way to do it.

  32. Pags says:

Zeno Clash + Crackdown x Duke Nukem = Something I can understand.

Hopefully they release a demo that’s lengthy enough to tide me over without ever having to buy the actual game because my goodness there is much that needs to be bought this year.

  33. sbs says:

I watched this “interview” with the Producer a while ago.
I think he was high when they made this. And when they came up with a game about a Neanderthal. With a mech-arm.
Hell, he’s probably high right now.

  34. CakeAddict says:

Eh, Silly and simple but such things are often enough.. fun, especially if it has co-op.

  35. RealHorrorshow says:

    Meh @ this.

But if someone doesn’t use CryEngine 2 to make the first Vietnam game worth a shit, I’m going to kill someone pretty soon.

  36. Joseph says:

Website with HD version is down now. Oops.

  37. Doc MacRae says:

    It looks beefy.

    And awesome.

Post the demo when it comes out!

  38. DBeaver says:

  39. Tom says:

Bring it on!! Finally a game that just looks like it could be worth paying for ;)

  40. Tom says:

This looks awesome! lol – the eye popping got me the most…

  41. Max says:

I think this actually looks pretty cool. This is mindless shooting done right. At least it looks better than that shitty Necrovision game.

  42. KanaKa says:

I felt at moments that i was seeing a new version of Super Smash TV…
It would be awesome to have a “next-gen” one

  43. N says:

Realhorror, MenOfValor was a pretty decent take on ‘nam…

I have my hopes up for this crap game for now, it seems like that underground meth-type game that appeals to very few…

  44. Paul Moloney says:

    BioSerious Sam.

  45. MeestaNob says:

This has joined Xeno Clash in my HolyFuckWANT list.

  46. Deuteronomy says:

Max: I thought the Necrovision demo was insanely good. Probably the best demo I’ve played since Crysis. March 12th can’t come soon enough.

  47. Scott says:

    [X] Flak Cannon
    [X] Bio Rifle
    [ ] Nali Healing Fruit

  48. Diogo Ribeiro says:

Thanks :) But I think this can be chalked up more to the muscular artwork than the game itself, as Skeleton Krew is an isometric shooter with no melee component I remember of.

  49. Skwizzal says:

    In the future?

    I’m sold.

  50. hydra9 says:

Well, it’s out on Steam right now, but I’d wait a while. Apparently, it’s slower than a lame mule and full of bugs.
