Mythos Does The Lazarus Thing

The greatest tragedy about the closure of Flagship last year – apart from a ton of good people losing their jobs, of course – was not the loss of dreary demon-basher Hellgate: London, but of the promising free-to-play Diablolike Mythos. Ditching the subscription fee was a dangerous experiment for Flagship, but Bill Roper and co never got to see if it worked. However, their sometime publisher Hannbitsoft managed to hang on to the license and tech upon Flagship’s demise, and they’ve just announced development has restarted. From a different studio, inevitably. How do we feel about this?

The funny thing about Mythos is that it was essentially finished, with future plans being more about additional content than sweeping changes. Hannbitsoft, however, seem to have tasked the new studio (two of ’em, in fact – T3 Entertainment and Redbana US) with a fairly significant rethink. “MYTHOS is currently in a good condition where it’s being reconstructed” says the official release. “We are trying to keep the strengths that MYTHOS used to have, and strengthen them even more to make more suited as an online game.”

Curiously, that the game is/was free isn’t mentioned in the release – could this mean Hannbitsoft intend to move to a traditional, subscription-based business model? Something we never got around to seeing was the micropayment goodies due for Flagship’s Mythos – perhaps that’s now been abandoned.

And that could work out just fine – it’d be difficult to claim Mythos does anything new, but plenty of people will be happy to pay for it because it’s essentially the closest there is to Diablo Online. Albeit with Warcraft-esque graphics – forever a cause of seething fury for A Certain Type Of Gentlemen. I kinda dug it, so it’ll be good to see it come back – but it’s a terrible shame it now belongs to its funders and not its creators.

    Well it managed now by a Korean studio, which will probably broke that superb hack and slash into pieces. On the other side Runic Games (former developers of Mythos) are working now on Tochlight, the spiritual successor , to Mythos.

    The beta was great. Maybe Torchlight will fill that gap… I’m rather miffed at the whole Hanbit / Namco won’t let you play Hellgate in the US while we keep updating it for other territories crap, but that’s not Flagship’s fault. Oh wait…

    So we have Mythos being revived by the people who funded Flagship, Torchlight being developed by some of the people from Flagship under a new name…and both will ultimately be crushed by Diablo 3 by Blizzard, the company that Flagship came from in the first place.

    Irony isn’t the right word, but it’s the first that comes to mind.

    @Downloads_Plz sounds like all these people are triing to revive the diablo succes. That will not happend, because the world is different now. There are now other games, If only. … (Like reviving the old Roman army to fight USA. Pilum soldiers vs atomic bombs / jets. )
    But I guest not everybody you listed is that naif, some are just probably trying to make games that are fun to play, and make a living with that.

    Diablo online ? subscriptions ? micropayments ? ugh, *shiver* …. hell no, im not going near it, they just won’t learn, and what was left out of the flagship disaster is now doing another diablo like thingy based on micropayments as well, jeez.

    it always sound like they are trying to make WOW again with 1/100 of the content and then charge you for every single thingy that gets added

    im already fearing that diablo 3 will get ruined with this crap

    If the new devs can keep the same character and feel of the game the same as it was under Flagship, I’ll be pretty excited about this. At the moment, I’m much more excited to hear that Runic actually has a product in development – I thought they’d fallen off the radar. Glad to hear they didn’t.

    Also, the one weekend I had with Mythos was a whirlwind romance ending in tragedy when the game shut down three days after I got into the beta. Memories…

    The betas were awesome. Now this game I feel I will never appreciate again because it’s being mishandled by the same people who make those terrible grindfests with terrible game engines. Die Mythos. Live Torchlight.

    @Nuzz: Torchlight ? That game made by the flagship dudes ? the ones that already fucked up Hellgate ? you have hopes on that ?

    They already said they were going for micropayments (so you know it will be a grindfest probably with lack of content like hellgate at least initially)

    You have no idea. Flagship were given enough money to make FOUR big-budget MMOs, and that was just the money given them for Hellgate. I kid you not. Hanbitsoft invested tons of money, and ended up getting totally screwed (I think they might have come close to shutting down, but were bought up by T3), and they didn’t get anything they were promised. They weren’t the only ones, either.
    I know a few former Flagship employees, and despite the story that management told the press about giving out the final paychecks out of their own pockets, employees never were paid what they were owed. Management misused company funds to take their families on vacation and buy “company” sports cars. The management still tried to play the victim at the end, when talking about the discussions they had with Hanbit, trying to get more money after they wasted all they had been given, but the responsibility falls squarely on their shoulders for the collapse of Flagship.

    P.S. to games journalists- Bill Roper has worked as a PR guy, not a game developer. He didn’t “make” (or even work on) Hellgate or Mythos any more than he did Diablo 2 or any other Blizzard game. I know he likes to take credit for these things, but he made no design decisions on any of them; stop letting him get away with that B.S.

    Hellgate London and Mythos where being made by different parts of Flagship studios. Mythos felt like a solid game even in its beta stage. In my opinion, the first diablo-clone style game that got to what made diablo 2 fun and even improved on some parts (best crafting system I have ever seen in a game).
