‘Taschendale: Hitlers Must Die! Beta Footage

Yes, I know, Paschendale was WW1. Man!

Yay! This first surfaced over on Tigsource and is clearly splendid, and on more than the much-discussed Good-Name=RPS Coverage grounds. We’ve talked about No Quarter as part of our Unknown Pleasures 2009, the Edmund McMillen/Alex Austin Cryptic Sea project of six games. This was what they were called GUN then. Now it’s called Hitlers Must Die! This is what we call progress. For surely, if the RPS readers can agree on anything, it’s on the idea that if presented with many Hitlers, offing the lot of them would be the thing to do. The above screen’s from the Hitler Must Die intro rather than the Beta footage. Its physics-heavy Hitler-annihilating action is found nestling below…

It really is somewhat nifty.

As I crawled to the computer, wiping sleep from my eyes, this was forwarded to me by Poisoned Sponge. Though you don’t get thanked above the cut for forwarding me a link to somewhere I’d look at every day anyway, but you do get mentioned here, out of a sense of honesty, decency and fair play. Yes.

  1. bob arctor says:

    Looks awesome.

  2. Russ says:

No, IS awesome. I’m just wondering how the monochrome will hold up after a few hours.

  3. Supraliminal says:

It’s too dull gray. Where are the red nazi flags and blue walls from wolfenstein….! Anyhow it looks like a big barrel of fun, especially those entering through windows parts.

  4. Wedge says:

Nice to see the old Gish engine get some new use…

  5. roBurky says:

I don’t think there’s any aspect of this that I like.

The shadows, maybe. They look nice.

  6. Loki says:

Please have a giant robot Hitler end boss.

  7. TCM says:

Needs more swastika. Preferably defacable swastika. Defacable as in “make it into hammer and sickle”. Bright red hammer and sickle. Painted from the blood of many Hitlers.

  8. spinks says:

I don’t care if it’s good or not. I can’t not buy something with a title like that.

  9. PleasingFungus says:

Reminds me amazingly of Gish. Isn’t this the same dev?

EDIT: Hey, I didn’t read the post closely enough. Go me! And go Hitler-killing.

  10. Rob says:

I must replay Gish actually, fine game.

  11. MrBejeebus says:

    i think so…

looks awesome, could do with more stark reds to stand out from the shades

  12. A Dead Eldar Guardian says:

    What’s everyone got against Hitler?

  13. Serondal says:

I dunno A Dead Eldar Guardian, I guess that depends on who you ask. I have a friend that loves Hitler and wishs he would have won . . . but I suspect that is not the majority when it comes to opinions about him.

I pitty the man more than anything for his insanity and jealous wrath against Jews ect. also kinda happy he was slightly insane because allies would have had a much harder time if he weren’t. Hoding back Tigers that may have turned the tide of war, attacking Russia for no good reason O.o ect.

  14. Markoff Chaney says:

I think most people harbor an irrational dislike of Vegetarians, myself.

  15. Hulk Hogan says:

  16. Riaktion says:

Looks like fun, not sure if its somethins I would stick with though, not a big fan of platformers.

The music on that video is pretty epic though, I wonder what it is….

  17. Dracko says:

    This game will own.

  18. jim says:

Ha! Ha! Yes, coz murdering millions of people is fine as long as you’re a socialist!

Now, where did I put my chairman Mao t-shirt?

  19. Bhazor says:

    Heres a question.
When did crosses for eyes become the indicator of comic deadies? I mean why crosses? Who first drew them to indicate a death?

On topic: This looks satisfyingly vicious for a 2d platformer and if the jumping feels a little weightier than Meatboy this could be the best indie since Sperlunky.

  20. TCM says:

    Frig yeah, Communism!

(if you were serious, dude, it’s HITLER. Everybody kills Hitler, wants to kill Hitler, or has written a story about killing Hitler. Except Nazis. They want to resurrect him with evil occult science [which sneers at you], or keep his brain alive in a jar [like Walt Disney, controller of the shadow government that rules the world])

  21. Okami says:

anybody else noticed, that the score stayed at 0 through the whole video? if killing dozens of hitlers at once doesn’t score you any points, what on earth could?

  22. dartt says:

@A Dead Eldar Guardian He was pro-DRM.

  23. psyk says:

“Churchill Vs Adolf : “Kick Hitlers Ass”

  24. DeliriumWartner says:

Looks like a 2D cross between Stranglehold and Max Payne, but with physics. Love it. Doubt I’ll be able to do it as coolly (?) as that guy but it’s great to watch.

  25. Pijama says:

    Churchill Showdown

  26. Adam says:

if it doesn’t play that awful, awful music during actual gameplay, it could be great fun for a few hours at least…

  27. A Dead Eldar Guardian says:

    Oh my…that’s quite heinous.

  28. Bret says:

It’s like all my time travel related dreams are coming true!

  29. Phil H says:

Was it my imagination, or was our protagonist doing the sliding-on-you-back-shooting-past-your-feet thing at several points in the video? Hot.

  30. Garu says:

First thing I thought upon reading this is “Lemmings in reverse.” I was a bit disappointed to see it is pretty much a standard platformer (although it looks pretty decent).

Imagine it: a game where a bunch of Hitlers spawn, walking toward freedom. You must place traps and deform the terrain such that none of them make it to safety. I contend that this game must be made.

  31. The Fanciest of Pants says:

    Very cool, do want

  32. Saul says:

I second the call for a bit of colour, but looks like a bit of fun.

  33. Idle Threats & Bad Poetry says:

I want to remind all of you that I ranted on the Wolfenstein intro cinematic threat how frustrated I was that WW2 games never let you kill Hitler anymore. (Not even the flipping Wolf3D RPG mobile phone game!!!) This new isn’t exactly what I had in mind, but beggars can’t be choosers.

  34. MultiVaC says:

They’ve set themselves up for failure. The game is called Hitlers Must Die. No game could ever live up to that title.

  35. Hmm-Hmm. says:

Looks pretty nice, but I’m sure I’d hate playing it. It’s probably one of those games where a single minute error can cause a death.. which means that you get to play a level over.. and over.. and over.. and over again. Hopefully getting closer and closer to the end.. providing you don’t slip up.

No, I’m sure I’d really hate playing this.

  36. TCM says:

    lrn 2 qwiksave?

  37. Nallen says:

safe to say that exceeded expectations

  38. A-Scale says:

I absolutely adore it. The concept, the blockiness, the fake Russian writing.

And frankly, everyone likes shooting Germans. Everyone LOVES shooting Hitlers. The only issue is that there are so few of them. This game solves that problem.
