Awesome. I’ve seen this kind of thing reported by other sites too but I’m not sure if it’s the same leech.

  3. Ian says:

    RPS 1
    Bastards 0

  4. Senethro says:

The comments there require moderation :<

  5. Javier-de-Ass says:

hey I’m getting that crazy bear hotlink pic all over this site for some reason now. or specifically the forum. hehe link to i49.tinypic.com

  6. Metalfish says:

I can see your solium infernum experience has taught you well.

  7. Christian says:

Aah, now I get it. I didn’t know what this was all about at first.

    Well played :)

  8. Michael Leung says:

    You are awesome.

  9. akbar says:

Yo, just so I understand: if I’m using Google Reader to read RPS, am I doing a Bad Thing? I mean, you provide an RSS feed, but also I’m getting the sad bear picture and a note saying that if I’m reading the content on any other site, they’re thieves. ???

    • Kieron Gillen says:

Sad bear is being a little over-active in terms of stopping hot-linking. If we (i.e. Alec) get it working properly , it’ll let RSS feeds and not fuck up the forum. We’re dialing it back now. All should be well shortly.

  10. Mike says:

    This is pretty amazing.

(“Snip” – Ed) if people are hunting it down for a peek.

    • brog says:

but honestlz, itäs probablz best not to feed them traffic.

    • Kieron Gillen says:

Mike: Yeah, deleted your link. If people really want to find it, they can, but I want to feed ’em the minimum of traffic.

    • Mike says:

Yeah, I did wonder if that was the reason. Also, I realise some people would like to vent their feelings in less constructive ways. But it was a sort of ‘cannot believe this is true’ thing until I hunted it down. Crazy stuff.

Anyway, all’s well that ends in a meme. As they say.

    • Lobotomist says:

Yea I found it. And hell I am hooked!
Its stealing from all relevant gaming news sites. So you dont need to visit them all !!

Nah… Just kidding. Its a terrible crap site, full of popups , and amazon ads.
      Dont even bother. :P

  11. Meat Circus says:

Oh, so that’s why you’re doing a referer check on your images.

Can you exempt Google Reader, thank you please?

  12. Jacques says:

*insert Borat thumbs up picture here*

  13. Agrajag says:

I think that site should have been goatsee’d.

  14. Dan Puzey says:

IMO you should post another story of the same sort, but make sure your real URL is high enough in the text not to get clipped off the shortened text. And possibly make sure sad bear is replaced by a large phallus when their zombie hits the site…

  15. Colthor says:

Haha! They can’t even be bothered to proof-read the stuff they plagiarise.

  16. CMaster says:

Perhaps the original article should have started though by explaining what the proper site is? I know that there was a link to rockpapershotgun.com, but I’d have said somewhere “If you are reading this on a site that is not rockpapershotgun.com then don’t! come to us! or something similar.

  17. Dan Puzey says:

Ooooh, alternatively, having just noticed an earlier post….

If comments there require moderation, we could always just sit and comment repeatedly. If all of the genuine RPS readership commented on every story with “Why are you stealing this content?” say… two or three times a day…

    Or is that just nasty?

  18. Chaz says:

I never knew this sort of thing went on, I am gobsmacked!

  19. poop says:

this is pretty funny but at the same time its a bit of a shame that you guys missed out on such and excellent goatse opportunity

  20. AlabasterSlim says:

That’s just sad. There are ways to link to other news stories or articles without stealing the content. The fact that they just took your RSS feed and published it as their own is plain stupid on their part.

I’ll always link back to the original source I found something and provide a properly cited quote if I do use quotes at all.

  21. Sarlix says:

    Butt kicking for goodness!

  22. Rath says:

I am a happy panda now.

  23. Malagate says:

The replacement bear image is just….dawww way too sad! If I was a theiving leech of a website I’d break down and relent if someone sent me that, which is probably why I’m not running such a website. Would there be a way to, say, spam false RPS articles solely to their website whilst leaving other RSS feeds unaffected? It would be quite funny to see their website just filled with “MMO” news that’s the same spammed article again and again, ideally endlessly in sad bear form.
I’m very glad you didn’t go with Goatse. Very, very glad.

  24. the_fanciest_of_pants says:

    Well played sirs.

  25. Meat Circus says:

    Sad bear needs hug badly.

  26. Nimic says:

    I… am confused.

    Someone explain.

    • Aftershock says:

RPS writes an article, as they do every so often. It gets autopublished to RSS feeds so that good folks can get our RPS fix as soon as humanly possible.

This evil robot site reads the RSS feed, copy-pasta’s the entire article onto their website and says LOOK WE DID ARTICEL!!!!!!111!!

      And that’s a Bad Thing.

  27. stormbringer951 says:

Well played, RPS. Maybe you could add invisible 1×1 pixel images in some of your paragraphs, and change them to gigantic “This is a leech website” image if you find some of your content zombie mirrored.

  28. Tom OBedlam says:

The Daily Mail once hotlinked my friend’s work. He responded by changing the image to goatse. Amazingly it was there for 3 hours.

    • stormbringer951 says:

That’s common practice to use against bandwidth thieves. Cracked did that once :). Serve the bastard Daily Mail right.

    • Tom OBedlam says:

I would love to see some of the letters they inevitably recieved. “Dear Mr Dacre, I demand compensation for psychological trauma and a new monitor. I can’t look at this one again without seeing his colon looming towards me. Yours, Nauseated of Tunbridge Wells”

  29. Richeh says:

/b/lackup? Are we going under cover of nightfall, or do we just want them to think it was racists that did it?

  30. Jacques says:

The registrant of that website hasn’t hidden his whois info, we could always just sign him up for some porno newsletters, he might get the idea.

Alternatively, just report the website to his host, wildwestdomains and ask them to shut the site down.

    • cliffski says:

You really think that would work. Trust me, getting a site taken down for posting copyrighted work which is explicitly illegal under the DMCA and other laws is impossible enough. If the site is hosted in china, you might as well give up.*
RPS handled this the best and most effective way they could. Its a pain anyone has to take time out from creating stuff to stop this kind of shit :(

*same if its a blogger blog. Google don’t give a fuck about copyright, and take over a MONTH to take down pirated content at blogger. There is zero doubt this is a deliberate policy.

    • Jacques says:

His stuff’s hosted over in California, so it’s worth a shot.
Worst comes to worse, we’ve got his name and his address, I’m sure the RPS community would be happy to show the tabloids what angry gamers can do.

    • Tom OBedlam says:

Jacques: Eat Wotsits and complain from our thrones of hate? Tom’s confident prediction of the day: No revolution will ever be led by angry gamers.

    • Jacques says:

Yeah, and whine about things in comments sections of blogs., obv.

    • Tom OBedlam says:

      hehe exactly!

    • Jacques says:

Gamers – now with added whining and rickets.

  31. devlocke says:

So, will they be stealing this article about their stealing of the article about their stealing of your articles? Can you keep some sort of infinite recursion thing going on?

EDIT: Also, at least they have a “Rock Paper Shotgun” tag – they’re sort of half-assed citing their stolen content.

  32. Nimic says:

    They already did.

  33. Tei says:

These are not a normal jerks, but Spammers.

To understand the mind of a spammer, you have to interiorize the 3 laws of spammers:
    1 – Spamers lie.
    2 – Spammers are stupid.
3 – Wen in doubt, check rules 1 and 2.

You can’t fight these people with fire (or as in here: backfire). Is like fighting zombies with no letal weapons.

Hence.. This Will Not Work. (mark my words). Now, If you don’t understand why It will not work, check again the 3 rules.

    • Tom OBedlam says:

Even worse is fighting zombies with nettle weapons. No matter how often you sting them, fuckers keep on coming.

    • Kieron Gillen says:

Tei: Oh, we don’t think it’ll do anything. We just thought it was funny.

    • HermitUK says:

Mmm, and holly isn’t much better. Those spiny leaves look menacing enough, but it’s all bark and no bite.

    • Tom OBedlam says:

Hermit: Scientists remain baffled that traditional primary school bullying shrubs have so little effect on the undead. There does seem to be some emerging positive evidence thats zombies react very badly to noogying though.

    • Tei says:

Heres the real rules, for information.
      link to forum.spamcop.net
Notice the “Crissman’s Corollary”: A spammer, when caught, blames his victims.

    • Richeh says:

You can distract them with a cauliflower though, then bludgeon in their heads with an eggplant.

    • Tom OBedlam says:

The eggplantbergine cosh is actually at the forefront of Riot Police anti-zombie tactics.

….and it looks like I spending the rest of the day playing Plants Vs Zombies…. again.

    • Ginger Yellow says:

Non-lethal weapons can actually be very effective against zombies. Those sticky foam guns, for instance.

    • Gorgeras says:

Be careful; the supernatural can retaliate and not just with non-lethal weapons oh no: they might up their game. They might use barely-lethal weapons: link to youtube.com

    • Tei says:

      Gorgeras: awesome :-)

  34. JuJuCam says:

It amuses me that it gets filed in their system under “Online Gaming”.

  35. Stense says:

    Congratulations on your victory.

Songs shall be sung of this day forever more.

  36. Clovis says:

    RPS needs better DRM.

    • Tom OBedlam says:

      I approve of this

    • Qjuad says:

      A splendid notion.

    • Gnoupi says:

Waiting impatiently for a “premium” access, only from a proprietary program*, as the only way to read RPS :-]

      *Requires Internet connection.

  37. jsutcliffe says:

Why do I feel the need to cross-reference people posting positive comments in here against people advocating piracy in Bioshock 2 DRM threads?

    Also: well played, sirs.

    • Sam says:

Dunno, why do you? Considering the context is entirely different (I don’t see RPS requiring you to submit blood samples before you read its articles or anything), it would seem somewhat quixotic a task.

      (Also, well done, gentlemen.)

  38. Jigen says:

make internet connection mandatory. Oh wait…

  39. qrter says:

And now this post has showed up there too. This is meta-bloggery at it’s finest!

  40. Ubernutz says:

I shall visit upon them fire and famine, raise their lands and blacken their homes with righteous fire and terrible fury. Their women and children shall be forfeit to the Great Old Ones, and all their men fed to Horace the Endless Bear. With a baleful intent I will destroy them utterly, and completely.

Or I could go play Oblivion and giggle Jauffre’s face full of arrows.

  41. chesh says:

It’s something of a pity that such a good name got taken for such a terrible waste of bandwidth as they are.

  42. Dlarit says:

I love this! Revenge is a dish best served cold…

  43. Gotem says:

Can you check the referer in your logs to see if anybody has clicked the link at the offending site?
It would be interesting to see if you have any newcomer

  44. suibhne says:

This wouldn’t happen if RPS would just get with the program and use SecuROM.

  45. Yargh says:

I find it amusing that another aggregator has RPS stories under PSGaming. I take it that there will be an annoying RPS logo on all images now?

  46. Triangulon says:

Win! That shot would be a fine addition to failblog.

  47. Frosty says:

If it makes the HIVEMIND feel any better this did make me sit up and realise how easy it is for people to steal RPS content and thus take away their limited revenue; which in turn persuaded me to subscribe. Congratulations of sorts!

Speaking of which you should really give the option to donate more than a piddling $2 a month. I’d happily do £4 a month at least.

    • Alec Meer says:

Aw, thanks. [Blush]. Really is appreciated. And if you do want to give us more, it’s possible to take out multiple subscriptions at once. Thousands, if you like…

    • DJ Phantoon says:

Yes, Alec is right. You should pay for at least another subscription and give it to one of the poor.

    • Frosty says:

Subscribed three times. Now I’m paying roughly what I used to pay for PCZone. Huzzah!

      Find me two orphans, now!
