BFBC2 Patch On Wednesday

And it’s apparently going to fix the browser issues, hooray. PC Gamer post the full change list, which doesn’t specifically seem to mention any changes to weapon balance, although they are promised. Could this be a nerf to the medic’s Light Machineguns Of Doom? I hope so. Bloody healers. DICE aren’t going to reveal the weapon tweaks just yet, as they want “unbiased feedback”, whatever that is. I suspect there might be a game on the RPS servers to investigate the changes. Join our Steam group so you get a message thingy when we’re playing.

Wonder if it will let actually everyone use the Shielded Machine-Guns now. Or if DX9 Users are still pretty much blocked from using it because they changed the glass-material between the beta and the final version in some way, turning it fully opaque.

    • SkilledNewbie says:

MP – Window on static guns is now transparent on DirectX 9 systems

“MP – Window on static guns is now transparent on DirectX 9 systems”

Sweet!! I’ve been like Luke with the blast shield down trying to see through that damn view port and unfortunately the force is not with me..

  2. Kez says:

I’m just sad that the RPS server in the US is so empty all the time. I jump into the UK one with more lag just to play with fellow RPSers but I can’t help but wonder where all the US players went. Right after the server went up it was nearly full all the time.

  3. Fullbleed says:

I’m a bit worried about weapon balance, I hope they don’t go too far and put everyone off medics. Personaly I don’t even like the M60, I preffer the MG 36 which is statistically the weakest weapon for medics. But it has a fast rate of fire and that suits my play style.

    • lafinass says:

      @Logo

Except that with things like magnum ammo and other perks, you’re trading something. You gain more damage or more accuracy at the cost of something else- I never use magnum ammo on my medic, because I want his health packs to be as strong as they can. As long as everyone has the same access to the same weapon perks, then you can balance the weapons around their base numbers. If a medic wants to make his gun more powerful at the cost of weakening his utility, more power to him.

    • Jason Moyer says:

Bunny-hopping explosive-wielding assault/engineer classes are way more overpowered than medics are, and I’m still not sure I’d do anything to nerf them (other than maybe adding BF2’s “can’t shoot while jumping” thing, to help tone down the feeling that you’re playing Rocket Arena sometimes).

  4. Miker says:

I’m slightly skeptical of the changes. Given how BC2 was on launch, I’m pretty sure this patch may very well break more things than it fixes.

  5. HermitUK says:

“* MP – Isla Innocentes MCOM building fixed where knifing the fence would destroy the building”

It’s the return of the old “Police Station can no longer be destroyed with a pistol round” bug from Boiling Point!

    • Mr_Day says:

Aww, and here I thought the game referencing the old “Age of” series.

Nothing like dismantling a castle with a pikeman. Take that!

      *clink*

    • Nick says:

      Wasn’t it a crossbow bolt?

  6. RoTapper says:

    Just when I’m trying to take a battle-break, they release a battle-patch!!!

They should release a patch that has the soldiers yelling Warhammer phrases instead of profanity. Blood for the blood-god! M60ers can say dakka dakka dakka.

    • Nilesu says:

A mod with voiceovers replaced with warhammer quotes would be awesome, I’d be all over that shit like flies.

  7. Axiin says:

    @Skillednewbie

Do you mean it’s fixed after the patch?

Because it doesn’t work for me, I cant see through it at all.

    • goodgimp says:

Yes, it will be fixed in the upcoming patch, which is as of yet unreleased.

  8. Senethro says:

As a vehicle player I’m worried what will happen if less players use the Medic and the anti-infantry specialist RPG. Could be a lot more armour penetrating things about.

  9. bitkari says:

    Wow.

I almost forgot what it was like to have a PC game that was well supported, and properly patched!

    DICE = ACE.

  10. Cheshire Puss says:

    * MP – Kit/gadget loadout saved between sessions

    Oh thank fucking God.

    • RedFred says:

I went through the list looking for this too!

Every round my first life is quick because I forget to choose my preferred weapons.

      NOT ANYMORE!

    • Warduke says:

No doubt.. Finally!! Now why the hell wasn’t that in from the start? sheesh

  11. Tei says:

    * MP – FoV no longer causes the UAV station to rotate

I wonder how it was implemented to be able to create this error. Do the player convert into the station wen you use it, so a artificial station need to be added to your view? Seems so. Funny.

    Kids: hacks are bad!.

    * MP – Zooming in on a friendly using the SAIGA no longer causes the crosshair to disappear

Another weird bug. Seems theres a dependency the code that render names with the code that render the crosshair, with the code that power the weapons!. Do this mean that every weapon use different code to render his crosshair AND “his” names of friendly soldiers? hehehe.. another funny one.

Looks like a good patch. Lets hope it don’t add bugs.

    • Andy says:

All they needed was Tei on QA and none of this would ever have happened!

  12. Sobric says:

For those wondering on what the weapon changes will be, DICE dev Baza responded:

“Thats the point of not telling you, so you dont go looking for the changes instead you feel what the changes are. We’ll tell you later what the changes were.

For example, once in BF2 we put in our changelist we had tweaked an assault rifle. The feedback ranged from “Horrible changes it is ruined” to “OMG this is so much better” and in the end we didn’t actually change a thing with the gun. So telling you what is changes doesnt get an unbiased review of whether you think the changes are for the better or not.”

    • zeglis says:

      Thats pretty funny actually.

    • Shalrath says:

I’ve been on projects where we did that too. You can say you’ve nerfed something and BUFF it and they’ll say it sucks.

      It’s… funny.

  13. Dreamhacker says:

NEOSTEAD! They need to make this more shotgunny and less snipery :)

  14. zeglis says:

New server browser, kits and filters remembered. FUCK YEA.

    Dice reads the internets!

  15. Poindexter says:

“* MP – Kit/gadget loadout saved between sessions”

That’s the change that I’ve been waiting for. I hate having to reselect my kit every new server I join.

  16. Fatchap says:

Any word on whether they will get the Voice comms to work?

  17. Edgar the Peaceful says:

This game is the absolute Dogs Bollocks – warts an’ all.

  18. DW40 says:

More of what everyone else has said. The kit load out save is huge. And for the love of God I hope the server browser is fixed. Someone in a previous comment thread mentioned that the original Counter Strike got it pretty well done-meaning, boring and efficient-which makes having a terrible one, 10 (?) years later just bizarre. BTW, does anyone get numbers in the “Ping” column, because I don’t. I try to click on it to sort by quickest ping, but either way I-in Brooklyn, NY-seem to get a couple Dutch or German servers in the top five….sketchy.
Nitpicks, which I’d love to say goodbye to. Still love the game. And the RPS servers, even if they are hit and miss, population-wise.

    • RedFred says:

I think opening certain ports on your router will show the pings of servers. Go to the EA forums and there is a sticky FAQ which has the ports to open.

      Worked for me anyway.

    • lafinass says:

      @DW40

Running the game as admin will make the pings show in the server browser, but for me that also causes it to load up all of the default game settings every time the program is run. Which is unacceptable for me, so I just go without pings and cross my fingers. You can see the ping once you’re actually in server though- when it’s completely too late.

  19. Lucas says:

BFBC2 needs more work very badly. I fully expect that even this patched up it will still be the buggiest game I own. Crashing a lot less would be nice, and performance could be a lot better.

I get no pings in the server browser since my router (D-Link DI-624 rev_C3) drops the packets because they match a “twinge attack” filter. This is non-configurable and setting my box as DMZ does not help. BF Heroes apparently has the same issue. I can play, but I can’t pick good servers. No other games have any issues like this for me. I can’t fathom how or why they broke the ping packet format. EA support said they would escalate this issue for me, but I haven’t heard back since.

How many times do we have to beg RPS not to use the unblockable Steam event popups? I’ve actually had my BFBC2 crash because an RPS event alt-tabbed me out of the game. Please relent.

  20. gopherchucks says:

to see ping you need to run steam as an admin i know its strange but thats the way it works

  21. gopherchucks says:

however if it says 15 ping it will end up is 150 when you join lol net config sux just a lil

    • suibhne says:

The ping listed in-game is not correct – it counts the time your packet took to travel in both directions and have various witcheries performed upon it by the disreputable server. Once you get ping to show up in the server browser, it’s by far the more correct number of the two.

  22. Alexander Norris says:

Bollocks to passwords making servers unranked. Though I don’t really give a damn since I’ve already unlocked everything, I’m sure some people will complain and not want to play on the RPS server just because it’s passworded.

Speaking of, can we have the password back, please? dartt tried but it wouldn’t work and now it’s full of horrible pubbies.

  23. Wootles says:

Now if they could just make the Squad Deathmatch not have the A.F.V in it.

  24. wazups2x says:

No Negative Mouse Acceleration fix yet!

That needs to be fixed with the next patch.

    • i am paul newman says:

the mouse input is probably a deliberate attempt at realism and won’t be changed : \

  25. Monkeybreadman says:

Anyone else think this is the worst balanced AAA shooter for years?

Such a shame as the rest of the game is awesome

    • suibhne says:

I’m not sure what other “AAA shooters” you’re recalling, but I’ve played plenty of competition in multiple games and I think BC2 is far better balanced than CoD4 or MW2. Just, you know, two examples.

It’s not perfectly balanced out of the box, no, but it’s still much more playable than at least some other “AAA shooters”.

  26. Whiteout says:

Update your OS you slow SOB’s.

  27. Serenegoose says:

it was DX9 that was doing that! Grief. Also, I’ll update to Windows 7 or Vista when you give me it for free.

    I thought not.

  28. Anhamgrimmar says:

I’ll swap you my Win7 disc, if you’ll swap me a slightly better gfx card. Stupid x1950 PRO ain’t cutting it no more….

  29. mike says:

This “server witchery” you speak of is the actual junk the server has to do to process and respond to a message, that’s the full time it will take for a packet to come from your pc, act a change on the state of the server and send back the response. Basic network speeds are not the entire picture.

  30. harvb says:

MP – Kit/gadget loadout saved between sessions – Thank goodness.

  31. fatchap says:

Would I not need everyone to be on the same Mumble server / channel though same as TS? Makes it quite hard to have a casual game where you can have intelligent voice comms, which was why I liked the fact it was built into the game. Shame this is something else broken about this game

  32. Ffitz says:

Added minimum number of players needed to start a round (you can play and take objectives but you will get no score until 4 or more players join the server

Well, thank goodness that I got my best Player Ace and MCOM destruction badges the other evening on the empty PCGamer server. No chance to get those otherwise.

No fix for joysticks and hellycopters (c. D. Cameron) though. Boo!

  33. Rotapper says:

New server browser is a bit vague. Does this mean works right with more features or same thing with a new skin?

  34. Durkan says:

Worst balanced is a bit hard – I think it’s just the rest of the game’s so good that it makes the weapons balance seem much much worse than perhaps it is.

Still I agree broadly – I do think it needs work. IMHO Problems are one of over inflated accruacy rather than power.

Gustav and rpg’s fly in unerringly predictable straight lines, MG’s can be fired with greater accuracy than a sniper rifle.

Playing a recon with the semi VSS sniperskaya and getting out gunned at long range by medics with LMG’s is gratingly irritating.

If you can find an empty server to test your settings on you can manually edit the helicopter controls and get them working properly. Took me two or three attempts to get them exactly right, but now I can fly choppers properly.

  36. Spiffae says:

What about the bug where I am occaisonally revived as someone else? And then I (as a medic) get say… an engineer kit, but all kills count towards medic points. cracks me up.

    • Edgar the Peaceful says:

Sounds like what happened to Don Draper in Mad Men :)

  37. Forak says:

That’s not a bug actually- If you are a medic, and someone picks up your kit when you are dead (E), your kit is replaced by whomever picked it up. Then if you are revived you have the alternate kit.

    • Heliocentric says:

I often steal my friends medkits to revive them. Agreed, not a bug.

  38. hav says:

Had time to play some this morning and a few observations:
    – M60 does feel weaker, not by much though.
    – 40MMGL doesn’t seem to be as powerful, had my friend blow away the wall I was standing behind (with the explosives upgrade) and I survived, which I couldn’t do last night.
    – I don’t know if it was just crappy aiming this morning but I feel it’s harder to hit targets with the GOL but easier with the M95 now.
    – Grenades feel stronger.
All this is subjective though, just what things felt right. Could have just been more luck/bad luck this morning than usual so…
Edit: Also the M2CG didn’t feel as if it had been changed.

  39. RoTapper says:

Seems like a good patch so far. I’m glad they didn’t go crazy with the nerf-bat. I don’t see too much difference weapon wise. If they did change anything there its very subtle.

Server browser has a few more filters and it seems a bit faster.

  40. RoTapper says:

That was quick, this guy is on the case already!

APRIL 21: Update R7 and R10 have changed the weapons as such:|
    M60 Damage decreased by one bullet’s worth from its 25-20. (20 – 16.7)
1911 has had its maximum Rate of Fire decreased to 260 RPM… and an unusual damage change (it basically doesn’t change anything though). I’ll get to that later.
M1 Garand has gotten a tiny damage increase. Long range damage increased to 28 and range increased to 64.
LMGs have gotten all kinds of accuracy changes.
Okay, there’s quite a lot of little changes. Expect a full update by tonight.

  41. Maverickpwn says:

Hey guys, don’t worry. As usual EA have fucked this up with a patch that is causing most people to lag when spawning and at various other times during the game. That is, if they can connect to a server at all (which took me about 20 minutes). Server browser is totally fixed (even if PLAY NOW is broken… completely) so well done EA… you’re f**king c**ts. This WAS a great game.

I don’t really know. The new server browser was blazing both this morning and now. The slight lag right before spawning I’ve noticed, but no other lag during gameplay (play about 5-6 maps atm). Are you behind a router? I read something about opening ports helping in BC2, google it. Maybe that’ll help.

All in all this patch has been good for me, sorry to hear that’s not the case for you.

  43. Vindicore says:

    Some nice changes.

    However:
    1. Friends list still does not work; if you have to scroll down to find a friend you can not join on them
    2. I still crash out of the game.
    3. M1 Garand and the Flare Pistol stars don’t work making it impossible to get the awards for the stars.

  44. DW40 says:

Played an hour or so. Seems fine. Browser is loads better. Still one zillion medics. The spotting scope seems to work better. After reading it somewhere, I went to playing a front line sniper with either the red dot VSS or a shotty, mortar and extra nades+demo. Just shooting when possible and calling in a buttload of artillery. If you have a squad that stays together and uses cover,it’s a blast.

  45. godwin says:

Game is completely broken for me. It is now close to impossible to respawn, not sure what they did to break that. Massive lag ensues upon the one to two seconds after respawn, when clicking that ‘Enter Battle’ button actually works that one time out of 10, usually resulting in a quick and invisible death. There’s also a lot more things jumping about, skipping around (friends, foes, vehicles, debris, own weapon) and it’s just not fun to deal with all these things.

  46. fred says:

i am having the same problem enter button dosent work after the update takes me for ever to get in to game, how and why they messed that up is beyond me. but its nearly unplayable, when i can get in it seems to play better but it takes for ever to get in or respawn

  47. Smack_Down says:

Yeah i am having the same prolem with lag on spawn time… Updated drivers and still the same… Sometimes its 3sec delay others its 20 seconds. You’d think that they would definately get this right. Its really bad too becasue sometimes when you do spawn it drops you and then lags too and people can just shoot you…..

PLEASE this needs to be fixed ASAP!!!!

  48. hav says:

I’ve experienced the lag on spawn as well but it’s gotten alot worse now that I’ve updated to the Catalyst 10.4 preview drivers. Worth it though since it’s cut down my loading time from ~2 minutes to 13 seconds :)

  49. bs bf2 says:

yep, not working. im lagging so much when trying to respawn, i will NO LONGER PLAY this game. i will watch for a patch that fixes this in the next few days. if i dont find it, ill go back to cod4. (screw mw2 .. no dedi servers .. bs)

  50. RoTapper says:

Possible lag fix from UK BF forum:

    Source

    Quoted from that post:

    REASON FOR THE RESPAWN FREEZ:

Your anti-virus(AV) is causing the respawn freez. As a DICE-member stated earlier the problems most likely lies in the saved class file. Every time you respawn the game checks the GameSettings.ini file for class configs, and the AV got some of problem with this, making the game freez for a second, sometimes more.

    SOLUTION FOR THE RESPAWN FREEZ:

Add the BFBC2 folder in your “My Documents” to the anti-viruses exeptions-list. [ I’ve checked, and its the only folder who needs to be added ]
    Ex: “C:/Users/[NAME]/My Documents/BFBC2/”

    • Smack Down says:

Tried what Ro Trapper said and it seems to be working a little bit quicker… Still locks up a bit but vast improvement on before.
