Call of Duty: Black Ops Gets A Proper Trailer

So, this Call Of Duty game looks like something… familiar… Hmm. Nope, I can’t place it. Maybe you can? Whatever the likeness, it seems that some stuff may explode, while certain dudes may, in fact, get shot.

  1. a.nye.123 says:

0:10-0:14. Why is Bruce Willis in the game?

  2. JuJuCam says:

It appears to be a simulation of running around and shooting people and things, played from the perspective of the gunman… I’ve never seen anything like it!

  3. Dum de dum dum dum says:

What’s with all the sarcasm? What were you expecting, a My Little Pony sim?

Looks interesting IMO even though the animations don’t look as smooth as InfinityWard’s (RIP.) That said I probably still won’t buy it since all I ever play these days is TF2.

  4. Lars Westergren says:

Thank you Call of Duty series, for teaching so many that killing and getting killed for your nation is the most noble thing a human being can aspire to, and the greatest thing a game can be. Salute!

I’m a bit fed up with realistic military simulators. Can you tell?

    • Bhazor says:

Yes, because gay people seeing a marriage counselor is a much better direction for computer games to go in.

    • Rich says:

      Huh? Where’d that come from?

    • Lars Westergren says:

      I’d play that. Sounds interesting.

    • Heliocentric says:

A reference to the radiator halflife 2 mods.

    • Lars Westergren says:

Oh right, there actually exists something like that. I had forgotten about those mods. Thanks. *downloading*

    • Bhazor says:

Ooops. I thought you were the guy who made the Radiator mods turns out it was Robert Yang.

      Oh, what am I like?

    • mrrobsa says:

@Bhazor: I’d definitely much rather play ‘gay people seeing a marriage counselor’ than Hollywood Man-Shoot 17. I love action games but it doesn’t look like this title is really going to offer anything new.

    • Sobric says:

      @ myself

there’s meant to be a “This” at the beginning of the hyperlink, but something went wrong in the HTML drivecore, overloading somethingsomething (I just suck at html).

  5. eoin says:

for once I would like to have a trailer where the voice over guy wasn’t trying to be Don LaFontaine…

    link to

    … I a world before time …

  6. Springy says:

Looks rubbish, but I did get excited about the SR-71 Blackbird.

    • Thingus says:

Look a bit like Call of Duty… IN SPAAAAACE. Well, for a moment.

    • Rich says:

If realistic at all, that’ll be a really boring mission.
You’ll presumably be the CIA agent sitting in the back, rather than the pilot, so you’d be flown around for a while, take some photos, go home.

I imagine however, that it’ll get shot down (never happened), you’ll eject (the CIA agent can’t actually eject) and you’ll have to sneak and fight your way out of some jungle or forest.

      phuzz says:

      Yup, bonus points for SR-71

    • kyrieee says:

Does the bowcaster from Jedi Knight count?

    • dragon_hunter21 says:

      In re: Rich:

This seems like a game where they’re going to take “reality” lightly. Remember, the theme of the trailer seems to be “History is fake”. Plus, I’m damn skippy they didn’t have explosive crossbows in Vietnam/Korea/Wherever this is.

  7. N says:

    • ZIGS says:

      Ripped off from TimeShift

    • Berzee says:

Also Halflife. And Age of Empires 2.

    • Rich says:

      Half-Life, yes.
Age of Empires 2? If you’re including strategy games, the list will be pretty long.

    • Berzee says:

I know right? We have to thoroughly document this ripoff.

    • Berzee says:

Don’t forget Pirates, Viking, and Knights unless you want to classify that as part of HL.

OH! And Deus Ex had that little hand crossbow.

      Minicrossbow. <3

    • kyrieee says:

      Meant to put this here

“Does the bowcaster from Jedi Knight count?”

    • Berzee says:

YES! It definitely counts, that’s a legit gun there. Look at all these games that Black Ops is ripping off. Or alternatively, look at all these games that ripped off TimeShift.

    • GameOverMan says:

And the crossbow from the No One Lives Forever games, a more realistic depiction of black (kinda) ops than the one in that trailer (probably).

  8. Rich says:

The bit where the helicopter was going down in flames and the player was flailing around on the end of a rope, but somehow still managed to jump through an open window… that is the moment the very last shred of credibility CoD once had was lost.

    • jeremypeel says:

Have you ever seen World at War? Hell, we can go back earlier than that, have you ever seen Call of Duty 3 or Big Red One?

The series’ credibility was shredded the moment Treyarch played COD2 and thought, “Sheeeit, these understated horns are nice an’ all, but couldn’t we have something a little less respectful and a little more Avenged Sevenfold?”

    • Rich says:

I forgot about the Nazi zombies.

      Why? Why Nazi zombies?

    • Rich says:

Didn’t pay any attention to CoD3 or Big Red One, for the simple fact that they didn’t come out on PC, and therefore don’t exist.

    • jeremypeel says:

Why not Nazi zombies? It worked for Wolfenstein.

      Oh wait…

(Also, I just found an IGN review of Wolfenstein in which the reviewer calls Wolfenstein 3D “the Inglorious Basterds of its day”. I forget how spoilt we are by quality of journalism here.)

    • Heliocentric says:

Nazi zombies because on the venn diagram of people it is ethical or null ethically to to kill this is but one overlap, see also serial killer rapists.

    • DXN says:

      Rapists of serial killers?

    • a.nye.123 says:

      It’s a pretty niche fetish.

    • FunkyBadger says:

      Zombie Mexican Russian Ultr-Nationalist Robots.

      From the future.

    • GameOverMan says:

or zombie cyborgs that follow only one of the 3 laws of robotics (chosen randomly so you don’t know which one) from the past (after having been sent there from the future)

  9. westyfield says:

No! Cheerful helicopter, come back to me! Don’t go towards the light!

  10. Alexander Norris says:

If the MP can actually be balanced (unlike World at War’s fucking horribly broken SMGs), I’ll probably pick this up if only to reward Treyarch’s recognition that matchmaking is dumb.

  11. wcaypahwat says:

Screw credibility. This looks absolutely berko nuts.

I know CoD just isn’t the same anymore, but still, I love me a good action scene.

  12. panik says:

Another ride on the roller-coaster through the firework display…..with occasional stops for a game of duck shoot.

  13. westyfield says:

Also, at 0:59, his shotgun blast sets the guy on fire. What is this, Borderlands?

  14. Arsewisely says:

0:54 Ooh! A Vietnam tunnel section – looking forward to that.

  15. Turin Turambar says:

Oh look, an expansion to MW2, just themed in a different period!

So much for people critizing MW2 campaign, this looks exactly the same.

    • Wordy says:

CoD games might as well be released as MP-only games the campaigns are usually so underwhelming/irrelevant.

    • Kualtek says:

Call of Duty 4’s campaign was at least OK, if not brilliant in some places. Need more of that and less whatever this is.

I wonder how many times your own character dying will be slapsticked this time around. I have to think that was some kind of parody in MW2.

  16. Drexer says:

A bit late for this(I actually thought I had mentioned this on a previous post, but apparently not) but:

Inb4 the Americans were ethically correct all along.

  17. Jimbo says:

That’s some top-notch whining from the narrator. “Wah! Everything is wrong! Nobody understands me! My girlfriend left me! I’m going to cut myself…”

This ain’t no MW2 Infamy Trailer, that’s for sure.

    • Superbest says:

Yeah, what the hell? He keeps moaning about some breach of epistemological ethics and all you see is people shooting other people, obviously as part of a war. Not only is the narrative completely divorced from the gameplay, the two are apparently in diametric conflict.

      How insulting.

  18. hamster says:

Didn’t like the narrator. Also, the explosions looked kind of pixelly although that might be an effect of the video recording (i hope) rather than in game graphics.

  19. Mashakosha says:

I was sold as soon as I saw the SR71s flying around. Beautiful piece of technology that.

  20. HexagonalBolts says:

    now THAT was a trailer

  21. Flimgoblin says:

So they finally released the footage of West/Zampella’s last day at Infinity Ward?

  22. JustExtreme says:

    @Lars Westergren

Idiot. You think Call of Duty is a realistic military simulator.

    • Lars Westergren says:

I forgot the quotation marks. Do forgive me.

  23. Vadermath says:

I’m a sucker for Cold War conspiracies (sucker as in, I’m entertained by them, I don’t believe them), and for some good action, so this should suit me just right. That was also a cool trailer.

  24. Brendan says:

    Haters gon’ hate.

COD4, 5 and 6 were all very decent games. Glitchy, broken and unbalanced in many ways, lacking in story and characters, but still very decent and fun.

I’ll get this when it comes way down in price, just like the previous games.

  25. Snuffy (the Evil) says:

It already looks more enjoyable than Modern Warfare 2. I probably won’t buy it, but I’ll at least give it a rent on one of those blasted consoles.

  26. Superbest says:

1:10, is that a woman naked except for bandoliers obscuring her bare chest, shooting a rifle gangsta style?

  27. int says:

Looks fucking badass. Now we just need dedicated servers, 32 player maps and mod support!

  28. Tei says:

If war is this awesome, I DECLARE WAR TO CHINA!.

  29. Jonas says:

    Know what would be innovative?

If it had women in it.

    • Rich says:

Ones with enormous bosoms, skinny waists and armour that just about covers the important bits but leaves the stomach, cleavage, legs and much of the ass exposed?

      Innovative indeed.

    • westyfield says:

      @ Rich:

      There are other types?
A new horizon for gaming awaits…

    • FunkyBadger says:

You’d be amazed how few – i.e. none – female Tier 1 field operatives there are.

  30. LD says:

modern war games should be six months long and generaly be boring as fuck, then punctaute said six months with 10-15 mins of sheer terror every couple of weeks.

also feature lectures on the terrifying wildlife and what beeing captured will entail.

maybe a week or two off in the middle where you get patronised in rainy britain by family members.

  31. Malibu Stacey says:

If this was a movie I’d have no interest in seeing it. As it’s a game I’ve even less interest in seeing/playing it.

Hollywood-isation of video games continues relentlessly. Sad thing is all the XBox 360 kids will probably flock to this in droves rather than ignoring it for the utter drivel is it.

  32. tigg says:

    Dragon’s Breath shotgun rounds.
Pretty much the coolest thing ever invented.

  33. Rick says:

Its Modern Warfare. Without the “Modern Warfare” mark that is now legally ambiguous. If I only buy one overpriced, probably overhyped military FPS this year, its going to be Medal of Honour.

  34. Coins says:

I find it funny that a trailer for ‘black ops’ features people mainly clad in white suits. Might just be me, though.

  35. Flakfizer says:

Ramirez! Do the same thing again!

Ramirez! Squeeze more money from uncritical punters!

  36. i am paul newman says:

and all international conflicts get solved with esports

bud light presents the siege of shanghai fifa soccer 2012 superfinals, korea vs korea

  37. Samuel Bass says:

Shooter: The Shootening, coming to a PC near you now and forever after.

  38. Tei says:

I hope is released for consoles too.

I would buy the Atari 2600 version.
    link to

  39. Shalrath says:

“In a world where everything you know.. is wrong!”

Awww fuck, John, the sun didn’t come up again. Damnit, I SWEAR it does that every day…

  40. Bonedancer says:

“A world… where everything you know is wrong

A world… where internet nerds can’t say things like ‘Shooting down a helicopter with an AT4? I hardly think so!’ and ‘Actually the CIA man wouldn’t have been able to eject from the SR-71’ because it is a different world, do you see what we did there?

A world which is probably not quite as good as the last world but will still mostly be okay if you like that sort of world.”

  41. WiPa says:

Why do people call CoD games realistic?

They are about as realistic as low fat lard.

    • a.nye.123 says:

You mean real solders don’t wait for their vision to clear after being shot 4 or 5 times?

    • szlevi says:

Try ArmA 2 if you want more reality…

  42. szlevi says:

Yawn. Another CoD, most likely with the same boring, outdated-lame graphics, arcade-style movement and FUBAR matchmaking MP system… Activision is really pathetic in its rush to milk the CoD-series before it gets completely trashed.

  43. steggieav says:

    “A lie is a lie.”
Whew. Not everything I know is wrong after all!

  44. Chucrute says:

    Modern Warfare 2.5
The return of the dedicated servers

  45. Excalibur says:

I think the proper question would be, why isn’t Bruce Willis in more games?

But yeah, this looks more like a bad mod than a retail release to be honest.

  46. Trousers says:

So sick of the way call of duty plays

get a new engine or gun mechanics or something

  47. WildeAnarchist says:

I think I just slipped into a coma.

Apparently these philosopher-soldier-chaps are gonna sort everything out. Bout time eh!

  48. Gabbo says:

So Christopher Lambert doing the voiceover for a Bruce Willis-faced protagonist in Revisionist History Shooter: Fuck Yeah? Interesting. Wouldn’t telling us what really happened be the story from the opposing side? Or require it to be a geopolitical simulator with smoke filled back rooms and a healthy dose of ‘fighting in the war room’?

I’ll wait on this. Not on my radar right now, and this trailer doesn’t do anything to change that, but we’ll see.

  49. ZeeKat says:

I’d play some of these Call of Modern Shooty Khomandoz 46 games if they weren’t such permanently overpriced. Looks like our lovely fellow customers learned studios that sticking 60 euro/$60 pricetag on product and holding it for months is perfectly ok. Capitalism fail. Or maybe capitalism win, I dunno.
