Bloody Weather: Rainblood: Town of Death

'Rainblood: Town of Death' is basically what I think about my time in Bristol. Basically.

This Chinese Indie-RPG has released released final version of its English translation, which prompted me to play its trial. And I happily burned through its free half-hour and was disappointed I couldn’t play any more. Which is what a trial version is supposed to do. While made with RPG maker, it’s a quite beautiful, atmospheric short-form RPG which managed to conjure a somber mood quickly and has a mean line in mean, red lines slashed across your opponents (Which then fall apart, leaving lots of goop). It perhaps leans a little heavy on the genre tropes for the really jRPG-phobic, but I suspect anyone else would find something worthwhile here. The full game is apparently only 3-6 hours, and can be bought for ten dollars. And here’s the first part of a long-play below to give a taste of how it works…

    Looks interesting.

I tend to treat the jRPG genre in the same way I do those many dyed-in-the-wool FPS games that haven’t evolved beyond 2001. Basically if it a) looks good b) executes those genre mechanics -well- c) isn’t over-long and padded out and d) doesn’t cost a bomb, then I’ll have fun with it and it’ll be worth it. This seems to tick all those boxes.

Oh my… is this the first internationalized cRPG?

    Omnislash. Final lack of Fantasy.

Interesting; here’s a whole genre I’ve never really played before, so will give the demo a go.

To judge a genre on this would be pretty foolish. It’s neat for an RPG-maker project, but not amazing, and the JRPG ‘genre’ as it is has been diversifying at a ridiculous rate these past few years. I’ve played two recently – Final Fantasy 13 and Resonance of Fate – and they really couldn’t be more different. Aside from having pseudo-turnbased combat (and two very different interpretations on the same concept), there’s almost nothing alike between them.

Art direction was nice, but a gameplay looks bit heavy on the typical slow jRPG grinding for my taste. Also the crazily inflated numbers – first enemy you meet has 40000 HP?

  7. Svenska says:

that’s on my list of things game designers should avoid. I know that hitting someone for 9kajibillion damage might seem cool, but it bugs the heck outta me.

Is there a reason why they would inflate all the numbers like that?

    • Sonic Goo says:

I don’t remember why they do it, but I seem to remember pinball machines doing it for a well reasoned, eh, reason.

    • YOUREWRONGDUDE says:

The infinite number thing seems to be a joke, the game is parodic, just look how often it break the fourth wall.

  8. sockeatsock says:

From that style, it must be a level 99 jRPG

Anyone who doesn’t like the look of their own store, this is on GamersGate (and has been for a while)

I think it was even in their RPG sale – last week :(

My experience with the demo was dieing a lot and then giving up.

    • Kieron Gillen says:

Use one of the two defence special abilities. The one which does a counter should get you through the entire trial portion of the game.

Can I just say that this really looks quite good?

You are dropped into a world where you meet a poor young girl who’s seen her entire village die of a sickness she’s slowly succumbing to as well, yet she’s managed to accept this and live with it. You watch her get killed before your eyes.

Story should only get better from there.
