BFBC2: Vietnam Shown At TGS

It turns out that the disembodied eye of Gamespot picked up this one with an off-screen wobblecam, and you can check it out below. It does look fairly entertaining, even if the Vietnam setting doesn’t quite grab me. It’s one of those game themes that I just don’t connect with. I feel a bit like the Vietnam war needs to be dealt with in a different way. An Apocalypse Now RPG or something. Anyway, go watch.

Hello, ladies.

1. MD says:

What’s the deal with wobblecam videos, are they just intentional leaks with added edginess? The way publishers stomp around enforcing review embargoes and whatnot, you’d think they could put a stop to this sort of thing if they wanted to.

• MD says:

Ok, I hadn’t actaully watched the video. Obviously it’s a dumb question in this case. I was thinking of stuff like the Deus 3x footage that had been ‘secretly’ filmed during a press screening.

• MD says:

I normally let typos stand, but I make that one so freaking often that I need to shame myself out of it.

• Baboonanza says:

Talking to yourself is the first sing of madness you know :)

• Bungle says:

You got the first comment and you screwed it up royally. Good one.

• MD says:

first sing of madness

I like this idea. Let’s just pretend I sang those first three posts, in a fit of benignly idiotic madness.

You too, Bungle. It might cheer you up.

2. RaytraceRat says:

The horror… the horror!
I mean, I can’t wait. I just hope there will be good soundtrack.

3. darknoghri says:

Isn`t Men of War coming out with a Vietnam version? Or am I remembering wrong? Is that different enough to grab you? I mean, it`s Men of War.

• SheffieldSteel says:

What it is, is Battlefield Vietnam all over again, with a newer engine and a couple of new mechanics / game modes / whathaveyou.

At least, I hope so.

4. Heliocentric says:

Between this, bad company and 1943 (if you have a console) you’ll get 3 chances to buy the same game.

If they screw up bf3 like i suspect(pay for dedicated servers only, no lan, on boot online checking drm, unlocks which are totally balance breaking) they’ll have turned a massive battlefield fan into a hater. These games aren’t even stop gap solutions.

• DrGonzo says:

Well to be fair, Battlefield 2 had lot’s of balance breaking unlocks. Battlefield 3 SHOULD have unlocks, considering that as far as I’m aware BF2 started the whole unlock thing.

5. Nick says:

Only 4 maps =(

I like how he describes the map as all new looking when there are at least 2 maps in BC2 that look just like it =)

Also his use of the word archaic when he meant anarchic was amusing.

Anyway, as long as they manage to get the focus on gun battles rather than explosive battles it should be fun.

• Shakermaker says:

He meant archaic as in traditional, old school, as it always has been. So he used the word correctly.

6. blargy says:

It looks like a combination of vietcong and far cry 2

• DrGonzo says:

Yeah this game needs more racism. The Vietnamese should all be 13 year old girls and boys, and the Americans should have ‘Gook’ button.

Vietnam just isn’t a good war to make a game out of. You either trivialise it, or like Vietcong you try to be realistic and end up being quite repulsive.

7. ChaK_ says:

So EA/DICE keep mocking us?

When we ask for maps they give us graciously mode unlocks (oh please !), then they’ll sell us 4 maps for 20€?

• Heliocentric says:

Oh, i missed one. Lack of custom maps/mods.

If you plan on selling me bits of game in $10-20 chunks you’ll literally get nothing.

I’m such an AIM but look at arma 2. The project reality team just unveiled a whole bloody island with new assets and new playmodes, all that and its free.

8. V. Tchitcherine. says:

“Vietnam war needs to be dealt with in a different way. An Apocalypse Now RPG[-FPS].”

Fucking fund it.

• jeremypeel says:

I watched Apocalypse Now two days ago and actually found myself wondering about the RPG-validity of its plotline as it neared its end.

A journey downriver into the heart of darkness. Yes please.

Has there ever been any serious attempt at war commentry in the history of gaming? Not that I’m suggesting its an easy thing to attempt. It sure isn’t.

• Xercies says:

Not that i know of really to be honest, which is one of the reasons i want soemthing done in Vietnam or maybe WW1.

• bleeters says:

Depends what you’re looking for. Red Orchestra has always done a good job at presenting a brutal, accurate-as-we-can-get-it experience. Driving a tank, for example, is akin to being trapped in a claustraphobic death-trap.

• Michael says:

Vietcong actually did a pretty decent job of recreating the dirt, the squalor and the fear of fighting in Vietnam.

Going further back, Historyline 1914-1918 managed to make a game out of WW1 without losing a sense of respect for the fallen.

This game looks more like what you’d get if the theme park from Westworld had a Vietnamworld. Having respawns in a Vietnam game is missing the point so very badly.

• poop says:

in americas army no matter what team you choose you are always the apple pie scarfing americans fighting the cowardly terrorists, making it probably the most poignant artgame commentary on mans inhumanity to man ever madeaojdhwaouhdkjwablkhdgwagblkjwahglkd

• cjlr says:

Cannon Fodder was a damn good commentary on war.

• Tei says:

In Elemental the game tried to sell you units you already own (exact same stats), but re-skined…

….seems a bug of the tech tree, triggering the design of a new unit wen really you don’t have anything better to equip in the unit.

Some people say this is a comentary of .. capitalism.

9. Gary W says:

Q: “So what’s changed Mr Kevin O’Leary, Product Manager for BFBC2:Vietnam ?”

A: “Nowt really, its just a reskin of four BC2 maps we were going to release for free.”

Make a decent version of BF3 now or be forever dead to me, DICE. Also, stop aping Call of Duty.

• battles_atlas says:

That is a total misquote, its far more like:

Q: “So what’s changed Mr Kevin O’Leary, Product Manager for BFBC2:Vietnam ?”

A: “Nowtreally,itsjustareskinoffourBC2mapsweweregoingtoreleaseforfree.”

Dude needs to get a spacebar in his voicebox

10. Ovno says:

Where is the NAPALM!!!???!!!!!

11. The Dark One says:

It won’t be a true Vietnam-themed Battlefield game unless it comes out based on a build of the engine that’s older than its fully patched predecessor.

12. Tei says:

I think internally DICE has something like a “GameMaker” based on the BF engine, and can produce new BF titles by a intern in less than 10 minutes.

Creating only 4 maps is pure lazyness, or maybe is a cynic way to sell the game in parts, you buy the game, then you buys the 8 maps in a separate pack.

Well.. Is very hard to be positive about this …. scam.

13. rocketman71 says:

Still paid dedis and no LAN?. Still no sale.

14. starclaws says:

Another game they will push out too fast… Only to leave bugs in that they know about, give us 6-8 maps, and leave out features that could make the game that much better.

15. Monkeybreadman says:

He doesnt handle a controller very well, his aim is all over the place. I can only surmise he usually plays with a mouse and keyboard……

16. Po0py says:

Looks exactly the same as the jungle maps in BFBC2. With Heuey’s

• ScubaMonster says:

That’s exactly what I thought. It’s like a remodeled Laguna Presa. I didn’t get a single Vietnam vibe from this footage.

17. James Benson says:

I have to say, that guy did an incredibly terrible terrible job of selling the game. So the big new difference is….new character and weapon models…..and jungle maps (which is nothing new for BC2).

Did he seriously have NO gameplay features to promote?

• Skurmedel says:

And all the weapons, including vehicles looked like they handled the same as the BC2 equivalents. I was enthusiastic, now, not so much.

18. clockwork peanut says:

I really hope they include the BF: Vietnam feature of being able to blast jefferson airplane out of your vehicle, it may have been a gimmick, but an awesome gimmick nonetheless

19. Bald Space Marine says:

Jesus Christ, four new maps!!! What a luxury.

• Navagon says:

Hey, maps are expensive things these days. Sometime soon the global economy will be run not on gold, but maps.

20. BIG D 101 says:

lol, auto-aim FTW!

21. Navagon says:

Dynamic shadows are as fucking horrible as ever, I see.

Looks like the 2004 one, only without the Mopeds of War.

22. Gosh says:

new skins yay! :D

23. dantokk says:

Sigh. Why all the gnashing of teeth? I paid for the game based on its features at the time and haven’t been disappointed. More hours played in BC2 than any other game this year, by a large margin. Frankly, people’s expectations say more about themselves than the product.

• Nick says:

Except a lot of peoples expectations were based on previous games in the series by the same developer.

• DiamondDog says:

I’ve really enjoyed BC2 so far, not my favourite Battlefield game by a long way but I’m still glad I bought it.

This, though, is a horrible cash-in. I had the naive hope they would change the gameplay to fit the period but it’s just a re-skin isn’t it. My own theory is they know charging for a map pack would put them in the same shitheap as CoD, so they’ve tried to dress it up a bit more and called it an expansion. £20 for that, maybe? No thank you.

• dantokk says:

Seems about the same scope as the booster packs for BF2, I hope they’re priced accordingly.

24. dethtoll says:

Honestly the best Vietnam war game was Heart of Evil for Half-Life 1. The original version, not the remake. Ugly as sin and full of some ridiculous idiosyncrasies, but with satisfying gameplay, loads of humor, gobs of atmosphere, and in some cases absolutely fucking terrifying.

• CMaster says:

That was indeed excellent, although Apocalypse Now + Evil Dead was a somewhat odd combo.
What’s wrong with the remake?

25. rebb says:

Vehicle towing ?
Blaring Music from the Radio ?
Tunnel-Spawns ?

Where’s all the stuff that actually set the original BF:Vietnam apart and didn’t just make it 1942 with new Models ?

• SheffieldSteel says:

Damn, I’d forgotten that.

A massive helicopter stuffed full of spanners with spanners, with other idiots with guns hanging on the outside, swinging a rope with a tank full of other idiots on the end. Hell-o! we’ve come to visit your victory point!

Good times.

26. daf says:

I’d be infinitely more interested in knowing if they fixed the patching problems that bc2 is suffering from…

27. dingo says:

Will this have some decent single player campaign?

Cut the guy some slack. He is answering questions while playing a game at the same time.
I suck already when I’m on the phone while playing a game so. :p

• ZIGS says:

I want to know about single player as well, I don’t care about MP

28. Sigh says:

What is that little blue ‘X” symbol that keeps popping up on the screen? I can’t seem to find that anywhere on my keyboard or mouse.

29. The Great Skratsby says:

‘brand new experience, but it’s still Battlefield’
No, not really.

Anyway I hope the asymmetry of BF:V makes it in……

• The Innocent says:

I was thinking the same thing. Sadly, he was playing as the US and was using a moldy old AK-47.

• Nick says:

yup, looks like they are keeping the both sides are the same and just randomly pick a gun from their list of unlocks. Just one of the stupid design downgrades from the real BF games.

30. neolith says:

I am still waiting for the free map packs that I was promised when I bought BF:BC2. >:(

All I got so far were slightly changed modes forced into existing maps not designed for them. When the guy in the vid said they know how to treat their customers I had to laugh…

31. Dices says:

I hope this will be a standalone expansion.

I am not willing to pay 20 Euro for 4 maps.

Who wanted a re-skin…everybody was asking for more maps!!

32. Soundofvictory says:

I’m with dantokk up above. I have squeezed quite a lot of enjoyment out of BC2, which leaves me feeling like I got my money’s worth. At first when I heard about this there was a little bit of ‘ho-hum’ going on, but now I realize that its just what I want. More BC2 maps! Who cares if its simply a reskin. Surely there will be a whole new set of weapon unlocks for the OCD gamer within me. I want more BC2 maps. Here are new BC2 maps. How does this relationship not equal something nice for everyone.

33. Gdog says:

Its so saddening. Theres no love, theres no passion in many of my previously favourite franchises. You simply have to decide when to move on and take the good memories with you.
Everyone, move to Arma II, now!

34. ScubaMonster says:

Quite honestly I’m not really feeling a Vietnam vibe from this footage at all. If I didn’t know any better, half that footage looks like it could be Laguna Presa. It’s like they just switched around some trees and added some new building models and called it a day. This is a let down for what could have been a cool setting. Are the maps just running around a village? Is there any sort of actual jungle map?

35. The Innocent says:

Hm… he picked a medic with machinegun and magnum ammo. If the class balancing is the same as in BFBC2, then no thanks. I loved the game when it worked, but running into a four-man squad of bunnyhopping medics with their damn defibrillators and medpacks and magnum-ammo machineguns was never fun, ever. It made me sad to see him instantly grab that same loadout. Oh well, I’ll pick up this game if they ever balance it, which if BFBC2 is any indication, they’ll give it ironic patches.

36. Bungle says:

Tell the big publishers that gamers are wise to their tricks and they’re going to have to start working for their money again.

I will not buy this.

• Navagon says:

But most gamers aren’t wise. While there are certainly plenty of exceptions (like there are here for instance), gamers are probably one of the dumbest demographics on the planet.

• neolith says:

That’s maybe because more and more games are aimed at the dumb masses… :(

• ScubaMonster says:

I’d be on board with a Vietnam expansion, if it was ACTUALLY an expansion. I think Vietnam is actually a cool era left mostly unexplored in gaming. Toss in 60’s music and I’m sold. This however… it doesn’t even feel like Vietnam. I couldn’t even identify the Vietcong. Maybe it was the small size of the video making it hard to see, I don’t know. But that map looks almost identical to some of the maps already in the game now, like Laguna Presa. At best, this looks like a mod. That’s it.

37. B0GiE-uk- says:

No point buying this expansion unless they fix joystick support for the game. Flying hueys over the treeetops with a keyboard and mouse just doesn’t do it for me.

38. Isometric says:

I’m not seeing anything new here. Not so interested anymore.

39. DoucheMullet says:

It isn’t recycled locked away content given at a later date, it’s “Free map packs”

It isn’t four jungle maps with some skins, it’s “A huge $20 expansion pack”

Same shit, different day. Fuck you, DICE.

40. Bernard_Envy says:

Yeah right on, you cool kids, screw The Man and his scams!

41. Aaron says:

You people are complaining about it being the same thing as BFBC2, its a BFBC2 Expansion Pack. WHAT!!! Its an expansion pack, of coarse it will have the same stuff. It will have new weapons new maps. Etc. What more do you want? Id understand if it was Battlefield 3: Vietnam. Then yeah Id want more, but its just an EXPANSION PACK. Quit being whiny bitches. Jesus Christ…
