Lost Marbles: Rock Of Ages

The next game from Zeno Clash creators Ace Team, which will be coming out on the PC as well as the TV fun extenders in early 2011, is Rock Of Ages. It looks delightfully batshit awesome, as you can see from the most recent trailer, which I’ve totally gone and embedded right below these words. Said trailer shows a selection of things that the rock will smash, as well as some of the special powers you can expect to use. It also reveals more of the fantastic art style from the game’s Renaissance period. (Intriguingly, each level has its own historical art style.) Go take a look. It’s not a bad way to start a week.

  1. Armyofnone says:

Oh my goodness yes. Zeno Clash was a wonderful trip into a bizarre world, I only can hope this will be as uniquely stunning.

  2. DJ Phantoon says:

Thumbs up to these guys for refusing to make just another grey brown man shooter and coming up with something original. And bizarre. It’s like pinball?

    • pupsikaso says:

They say it’s more like one side being tower defense / strategy in preventing the ball from getting where it needs to get. And the other side being… well, the ball rolling down the hill.

  3. AlpineViper says:

That reminds me, I need to watch Quest for the Holy Grail again.

    • Edgar the Peaceful says:

Yes, looks like a real Terry Gilliam homage. No bad thing!

  4. mpk says:

Looks a little like Super Monkey Ball on really good acid.

  5. pupsikaso says:

What a wonderful way to end my week. Gandalf gets squashed and then they fire the ball into some big dude’s… balls.
Why can’t more games be as playful as that?

    • Tusque d'Ivoire says:

wait, your week ends on Monday morning? thats… just… aah.

This game looks very stunning. i love neverball.
And i still haven’t played Zeno Clash, but seriously want to now!

    • pupsikaso says:

Yes, there is life across the pond.

    • Thants says:

It’s not just some big dude, it’s Michelangelo’s David! Although weirdly they seemed to have censored him.

    • Nullill says:

I love that. “Hey, let’s stick a giant, fucking mosaic on the junk of one of the world’s greatest masterpieces. Because, you know, THINK OF THE CHILDREN!”

      That’s a healthy attitude.

    • Cyrenic says:

In their defense, they’re trying to release this on XBox Live, and those guys don’t like Privates ;).

    • Nullill says:

I see what you did there.

  6. RagingLion says:

Oh wow. That video makes me far more interested in possibly buying this. I mean the concept always sounded great for its uniqueness but I wasn’t sure how they’d make a rolling a ball a captivating experience … dragons, a giant statue of David and a somewhat humorous Monty Python-esque over-the-top tone to everything is certainly helping.

  7. Deccan says:

    And there was much rejoicing.

  8. Tetragrammaton says:

    I want your babies, ACE.

  9. Hyoscine says:

“TV fun extenders” is genius. Hope that catches on.

    • Thermal Ions says:

I’ve got all the fun I can handle just fine without said extenders. Nice turn of phrase though Jim.

  10. Baboonanza says:

  11. MrEvilGuy says:

I hope they include custom skins for the rock.

  12. Mavvvy says:

I see some Monty Python-esque style/humour. This could be superb!!

  13. l1ddl3monkey says:

Do you get wafers with it?

  14. Wichtel says:

This is soo stupid… I love it ;)

  15. AndrewC says:

LOTR (Movie) references, Monty Python references (punchlines *and* artstyle), knob gags (specifically things hitting knobs), and Ode To Joy being used (*again*).

This trailer is quite obviously the least original trailer ever, cynically pandering to the cheapest and most childish impulses of nerds and as such has no place on a serious PC gaming blog.

    I am disgusted.

    • Mitza says:

      Serious blog… pfff!

    • AndrewC says:

I predict a top ten choads list before the week is out.

      Disgusted, I tell you.

    • Thermal Ions says:

I’m disgusted that I haven’t heard about this game before. Didn’t care for Zeno Clash, but this looks ridiculous enough to play for laughs for the right price.

    • AndrewC says:

I am disgusted you did not read the article on this game RPS did back in June:

      link to rockpapershotgun.com

I am curiously resigned about Jim using the exact same picture for both articles.

    • Oak says:

      It’s a charming picture.

    • shg says:

wow, really? you have a bug up your ass, i think it looks totally creative and entertaining and i am not a ‘gamer’ in the least. maybe large balls make you uncomfortable.

  16. the_fanciest_of_pants says:

    Looks fucking brilliant.

I really enjoyed Zeno Clash too, this is going to be a pre-order for me.

  17. noobnob says:

This is a nice way to start the week…I was pretty surprised when they announced this project months ago. Zeno Clash already had a bizarre art style, and now we have this? I guess this is what happens when you have way more artists than programmers in your team.

  18. vanarbulax says:

    Yes, yes oh verily yes.

Also the smug look on the boulders face is priceless.

  19. blah says:

WTH is that ‘PS’ logo? ;)

  20. Bhazor says:

    … yaaaaaay.

  21. Taillefer says:

How could just rolling a big boulder at things be fun….
    Ohhh, I get it!

  22. Urael says:

Did they just shoot Michaelangelo’s Dave in his meat-and-two?

  23. Mr.Selfdestruct says:

A game that lets you hit the David statue right in the bawls with a huge rock ball is my kind of game.
I loved Zeno Clash, and this looks like marble madness meets Monthy Pyton, so I´m up for that

  24. terry says:

  25. Clovis says:

It made me strangely happy to see that the boulder has a face.

I got ZenoClash free from RPS, so I’ll be buying this game on day 1, just so I can finally give Ace Team some money.

  26. Gwathdring says:

Holy crap, it’s Terry Gilliam’s Artwork: The Game! I’m so excited!

  27. suibhne says:

The David moment may have been…er…climactic, but I was sold when the rock got angel wings and a halo. I just wanted to give it a big hug.

  28. Urthman says:

    1) I love this and want to play it NOW!

    2) This reminds me how much I enjoyed that free little indie game Igneous:

    link to igneousgame.com

  29. Inigo says:

Looks like Peggle has just lost its monopoly on games that involve balls and Ode to Joy.

  30. Lambchops says:

This is exactly the kind of lunacy i can get behind. Absolutely love the little halo thing.

  31. DStan says:

    Oh wow, Peggle flashbacks.

    Looks great though.

  32. Scandalon says:

Never could bring myself to pay for Zeno Clash (just the first __% of the demo) but this looks like great fun. 99% sold!

  33. Mike I. says:

Looks like Katamari Damacy without all the pesky picking-things-up.

  34. Wulf says:

I’m pleased at how this is looking and shaping up, quite looking forward to giving this a spin.

  35. Spliter says:

It’s time to add it to my tobuy list

  36. Novack says:

52 comments about bizzarre aesthetics and no one commented on this “brilliant” thingie being a MarbleBlast clone with another background?
