Breaking News: Total War Title Trembles

Imagine these men stopping what they're doing to look at the camera.

Stop the presses! Of course, being a website we don’t have any presses, so I just threw a mousemat out of the window.

We’ve received word that the title previously known as Shogun 2: Total War (being as it is the successor to Shogun: Total War) is now being published with the title Total War: Shogun 2. SEGA has described this change as “inverting the naming convention”, and say they’ve been meaning to do this for some time. Man.

Alright, resume the presses. I suppose I’ll go and get that mousemat back.

  1. Dreamhacker says:

    ….Makes sense.

    • Rich says:

Agreed. Total War is the series, which should come first. Shogun 2 is the game within that series, which should come after the colon, as an extension of the series title.

      Yay, syntactic correctness.

    • starclaws says:

Something making sense from the gaming industry! WE ARE DOOMED! I MEAN DNF IS COMING OUT TOO!

  2. Lewie Procter says:

I say they should call it “Total War: Shogun 2: Total War” just to be sure.

    • President Weasel says:

I endorse and approve this suggestion.

      Gets my vote

      It is only right.

    • EthZee says:

      …By Clive Barker.

Get him in for a day, making the teas or something. Maybe let him design a shoe. Just to get that on the box.

That post started as scary, then became odd and in the end it was funnies. Hah.

  4. JB says:

How can it be Total War: Shogun 2 if there was never a Total War: Shogun?

  5. Bornemannen says:

OMG, what if this catches on? We’ll have titles like Forever: Duke Nukem, 3 Diablo, Infinite Bioshock and Mocx….

  6. Jsnuk says:

Argh, I’m one of those guys who hates inconsistency in naming. It really licks piss off of my tits. Notable examples include the Rambo films and the Alien films.

    • Rich says:

“It really licks piss off of my tits”

    • Lukasz says:

hardly a big deal for me but changing for the sake of changing is just stupid. Consistency!!

  7. Rich says:

“I just threw a mousemat out of the window”
Was there a sharp yelp from outside immediately afterwards, Simpsons style?

  8. clive dunn says:

    slow news day?

  9. a.nye.123 says:

I hope they make this a retrospective change too. My Steam games list OCD will be placated.

  10. Pundabaya says:

  11. Flameberge says:

Should we now refer to it as ‘the game formerly known as Shogun: Total War 2’?

I quite like ‘Total 2: Shogun War’ as a title though.

  12. Babs says:

I prefered it before. SUBJECT: Total War implied that there was scope for non-war based games using the same subject. I was personally looking forward to ‘Shogun 2: Total Bukkake’.

    • tigershuffle says:

Messy Geishas been the first DLC i guess

    • SanguineAngel says:

I am disturbed by this comment. I am more disturbed that I know what it means.

      Also I laughed.

  13. Optimaximal says:

    inverting the naming convention

Jon Pertwee would be proud and/or spinning in his grave. I can’t decide!

  14. Optimaximal says:

Wait, are we sure it’s not Disney Total War: Shogun 2? We wouldn’t want Walt’s Ghost to haunt us

  15. Navagon says:

People have always referred to them as the Total War games. I don’t think there’s been any confusion there. I doubt there were a bunch of people thinking that Medieval is ripping off Shogun’s subtitle only for Rome to come along and do it too.

  16. theleif says:

    Total Shogun: War Too!

  17. Malcolm says:

    How disappointingly conventional.

  18. mbp says:

    My inner Paranoiac says:

Putting the name of the game first and the brand last puts the onus on each game to stand as a masterpiece in its own right. Putting the brand first smacks of a company that may try to use the Total War brand name to sell inferior games.

    Case in Point:

Rome Total War. This was a stupendous gaming achievement (the best in the series imho) and would have been recognised as a masterpiece whether or not it had the Total War brand. “Rome” appears first, the “Total War suffix” is almost an afterthought. Indeed the name of the game is very often shortened to Rome TW.

Rome Total War: Alexander – A minor expansion enjoyable enough in its own right but not a patch on the original game. Notice the careful positioning of “Rome Total War” first and “Alexander ” last. The “Rome Total War” brand is being used to make the sale on behalf of the lesser Alexander Title.

Thank you by the way for getting rid of the captcha from hell.

    • D says:

Yep and explains why “they’ve been meaning to do this for some time.” Man.

    • Jhoosier says:

I suppose “Total War: Empire” does sounds a bit better.

Let’s just hope they put as much time into not making this game crap as they did in considering the naming conventions.

  19. rocketman71 says:

    Publishers == Idiots

    Nothing new under the sun

  20. Tei says:

It need a “of” somewhere. Like “Shogun of Total War: The Empire Promise; Episode 1 – The Prequel, The Game of The Movie of The Game”.

  21. Maxheadroom says:

Perhaps now would be a good time to reverse the trend I have when playing these games, which is to install it, play it for 20 minutes and think “yeah this is pretty good. I’ll sit down and have a proper play when I have the time” and then never play it again.

    Every. Single. Time.

  22. mbp says:

Am I the only one who regularly forgets the name of this website and calls it Rock Paper Shogun?

  23. Nimic says:

This bothers me more than it should.

  24. Joe Duck says:

Yes, brand recognition and all that jazz, but beware, this could lead to some confusion…

    Off Duty: Call
    Unknown Enemy: XCOM
    Operation rising: Dragon Flashpoint
    Chernobyl’s Stalker: The shadow
    Arkham: Batman’s Asylum

    • Jonathan says:

      Pointless nitpickery:

I think you mean UFO Defence: XCOM or Enemy Unknown: UFO.

    • Joe Duck says:

      Hmmm…. Ok, true.
in that case, in our side of the Atlantic we’d probably have Unknown UFO: Enemy

    • Alexandros says:

It’s not XCOM, it’s X-Com FFS! XCOM is the sure-to-be-crap game that 2K is making, while X-Com: UFO defence (or UFO: Enemy Unknown) is the best PC game ever made. Yes I’m nitpicking, but I’m so very angry and sad at this new “xcom” :(

    • Joe Duck says:

      Ok, I give up…

    • Dao Jones says:

      *Gives Joe Duck a hug*

  25. Jonathan says:

    Deep breath:

Star Wars: Jedi Dark Forces 2: Dark Forces: Knight Academy: Star Wars: Star Wars: Jedi

  26. Rinox says:

    The Bloodlines: Masquerade, Vampire

  27. Out Reach says:

Sounds ugly. I know it’s a total war, I want to get straight to the specific time period first!

Shogun, Medieval, Rome, Empire, THEN TOTAL WAR.

  28. Pijama says:

Then again, who cares. The AI will suck.

  29. Ringwraith says:

I always thought it set out as this is the setting, like “Medieval” or “Empire”, and it’s in a state of TOTAL WAR (insert overly-dramatic booming voice here).
    How I saw it anyway.

  30. Zwebbie says:

Now that they’re changing names anyway, they should have gone all the way and integrate the latest fads; Total War: Shog2n. And they could have made the naming convention even easier and more chronological by adding more numbers; Total War 6: Shog2n. Let’s use Roman numberals for that, that’s always fancy; Total War VI: Shog2n. Then add in some fancy words that appeal to kids these days; Total War VI: Shog2n: Dark Company of Terror.

    That’s how classics are made.

    • Zwebbie says:

Or even more modern, ditch numbers altogether. Call it Total War: Shogun and pretend the original never existed, leaving players thoroughly confused.

    • Joe Duck says:

What you want is something that can attract the kids attention, something catchy, like
Call of War: Shogun’s Duty – Ancient Warfare 2.
That gives it a certain ring to it, an aura… of millions!

    • Rinox says:

Don’t you mean Total War VI: ShogIIn?

    • Buckermann says:

I’m missing an Xtreme somewhere in there.

    • westyfield says:

‘Show me the 2 guns: totally!’

  31. Hmm-Hmm. says:

mbp: probably, yes. But Rock Paper Shogun isn’t bad, mind.

  32. Oak says:

What an obnoxious thing to do.

  33. Fergus says:

    Total War 2 War Total?

  34. Dustin Diamond's Sex-Tape says:

Every numbered sequel cheapens the experience but the multiple of that number.

Are we men, or are we calculators?

  35. Magrippinho says:

Silly Quinns, there was no need to start throwing mousemats around, that saying works in the Internets as well! All you have to do is stop typing.

    You know, stop the keypresses.

(sorry, couldn’t help it, your collective groans are music to my ears)

  36. oceanclub says:

I’m waiting for the first Steam boycott group because of this.

  37. lethu says:

Total Shotgun : War of the Tentacles.

just my try at “inverting the naming convention”, sorry.

  38. Joshua says:

I ocassionally call it “Rock, Pickaxe, Shovel” when there’s something constructive going on.

  39. Ateius says:

This is exactly the sort of fresh-thinking innovation the Total War series needs to maintain its position as a competitive and engaging strategy title. Well done Sega!

  40. edwardoka says:

The first paragraph of this post made me laugh out loud on the bus. Thanks, Quinns.

  41. Jimbo says:

    Shogun: Twotal War.

I’m quite clearly right about this.

  42. Caspa says:

“Stop the presses! Of course, being a website we don’t have any presses, so I just threw a mousemat out of the window.”

Just wanted to say that I spat coffee all over my keyboard when I read this D:

  43. Kieran Brigden says:

    Dear All,

This fabulous discussion mirrors that we had at the office when doing the said renaming some time ago.

We’re pleased with the result, although some of your more interpretive ideas are also fun.

I particularly enjoyed 2 Shogun 2 Total, and variations on the theme.
‘Shogun Total Of War 2: Total’ would also have won my heart.

    Kind regards,
