And… Back On January 3rd, 2011

There might be a couple of minor updates during the next week, but we’re otherwise slumbering until the 3rd, when we get cracking for another year. And it’s going to be a really significant year, too. You should see my list of Stuff To Write About. It’s awesome.

On that note, I just wanted to say a couple of things. Firstly, thanks to everyone who subscribes, or who has donated cash at any point in the past. The money provided by readers has genuinely kept this site alive over the previous couple of years. We bought a new server with the money, and pretty much survived on that cash while we transitioned to having our advertising handled by Eurogamer. Subscribers should expect a huge bundle of competitions and other exclusive content in the new year, as well as a more regular newsletter! We have tonnes of games to give away and other stuff, too. So that’s a thanks to all of you.

Secondly, yes, the site is finally, thankfully, paying for us to work on it. That was always the intention, and boy was it hard work making it happen. If that profitable status changes anything then it’s that we can now focus on our efforts here, and won’t have to spend quite so much time forging wordthinks for other publications. 2011 should be the year when RPS really hits its stride, and I can’t wait to share that with you lot.

Thanks for reading, and here’s to the future.

  1. Warth0g says:

Awesome job.. this is my number one most read website now.. I honestly check on the hour, every hour and have no idea what I’m going to do when you guys go off on hols :-( Keep up the good work, I’m so pleased that you stuck with it and turned a hobby into a job – just awesome..

Oh, and I turned off AdBlock too ….

  2. Hybrid says:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone at RPS!

  3. BooleanBob says:

“yes, the site is finally, thankfully, paying for us to work on it”

Serves that Kieran Mullin person right for jumping ship when he did, eh? NO MONEY PIE FOR YOU, MULLIN.

All joking aside, I couldn’t be more delighted that something as worthy as the good ship RPS is proving viable in the stormy and uncaring seas of internet economy. Here’s to a happy holiday for Hivemind and commenters alike.

  4. thesundaybest says:

Thank you for this site which I discovered just after bootcamping my iMac to play Borderlands. I’m currently reading Jim’s book which I recommend to anyone who enjoys the writing here. Thanks to all of you for elevating the writing on PC games, and daring to think that te proof of a legitimate artform is legitimately good writing about it (you probably don’t think that, but I’ve sublimated my thoughts onto you.)

    Happy holidays.

  5. theleif says:

    I love you!

  6. Torgen says:

    No articles for TEN days!?!?!

I say…. 37 hours before the comments section descends into Lord of the Flies. And 19 hours before the shoespam outnumbers legitimate posts.

    • mod the world says:

Also means 10 days without a new Minecraft article! That will be a new record!

    • Jhoosier says:

No posts til the 3rd? What am I going to do? My world will be shattered!

Guess I better get started on playing all those games I’ve got queued up.

    • JackShandy says:

The spam bots are already devouring eachother for precious sustenance. Anarchy can only follow.

  7. Kazz says:

Merry Christmas guys, have a good one :)

  8. SwiftRanger says:

Good wishes on you too and the success is well deserved.

That being said, some more attention for PC exclusive titles (of the non-UK/US kind) would be good. There’s already too much multiplatform stuff you’d read on every games site here. I know you have to report some of these but plenty of things were missed this year or were discovered too late for a PC gaming blog.

  9. somnolentsurfer says:

    Congratulations! And Merry Christmas.

  10. bagga says:

Is there a chance you fellows could set up a Paypal subscription of $24 a year rather than $2 a month, for those of us with wildly fluctuating finances?

    • DrazharLn says:

Having seen similar posts here, I still don’t get what you’re on about. If you have wildly fluctuating finances, surely it is best to go for a easily cancellable monthly fee than a one time, non-returnable lump sum.

As it’s this time of year though, I might as well just point you at the subscriber’s page where if you scroll down but a little you will see a donate button that can be used for just such lump sum payments!

      Happy Hogswatch.

  11. Tainted says:

    Merry Christmas RPS.

Your website is superb and its wonderful to hear that you are now able to pay yourselves something from it!

    mickiscoole says:

Methinks my new years resolution will be to subscribe.

  13. 8-bit says:

you know I have only been posting here a short while but I have been reading for the past year and a bit and if this site disappeared I honestly don’t know where I would go to get pc gaming news, kotaku probably, lol.

Wait that’s not funny :( keep up the good work I don’t wanna go back there.

  14. KingCathcart says:

I really got back in to PC gaming this year mostly due to the quality of this site. More importantly the community of witty, intelligent people this site has fostered makes it a real gem in the world of gaming blogs. Keep up the good work everyone, Merry Christmas to you all and I can’t wait for what’s in store from RPS in 2011.

  15. The Army of None says:

Horace the Endless Bear Approves of This Post.

  16. Tomski says:

Thanks for another great year RPS, merry christmas and a happy new year!

  17. Arathain says:

A very happy Christmas, RPS chaps, and thank you for all your great work over the year. I’m excited to see what you’ve got coming up. I remain very happy to be a subscriber.

Oh, and fellow posters? Thank you all as well. You’re an odd bunch, but a good one. Even if you have some funny ideas (that being defined as ideas different from mine).

Edit: really fantastic header image, by the way.

  18. Pijama says:

Happy holidays, and here is to the best website about pc gaming around. A perfect blend of writers and readers – sometimes, the pun-chability of some posters gets simply epic, or some highly LOLable stuff such as the five-O dubbing.

So yeah, you guys are awesome. \o

(that includes Kieron too, that naughty naughty person)

  19. cjlr says:

Joyeux Festivus, amici. Have a good ‘un.

  20. NPC says:

I noticed recently that I stopped following news on other gaming sites, and stopped subscribing to many game-specific site’s RSSes – because I trust you chaps will post if something is worthwhile – as you have done for the last year or so for me, with style! Happy new year to you, and I hope your plans on ‘hitting the stride’ do work out :)

  21. Maykael says:

New Year resolution: The first thing I do after I get the credit cards that were stolen from me last week (effectively ruining the ongoing Steam sale for me) will be to subscribe to the most wonderful place on the internet.

Thanks guys for all the incredible work you’ve been doing and for bringing this community together. I can’t imagine my life as a PC gamer before Rock Paper Shotgun and I’m sure I’m not the only one. And I’m fucking serious.

Have a very happy Christmas and I hope you enjoy this well deserved rest!

  22. Jonathan says:

Three cheers to Uncles Jim, John, Alec and the other one(s). I will look forward to your 2011 wordthinks.

  23. kyrieee says:

    When did RPS start? 2007, 2008? I can’t remember

    • cjlr says:

1873. It’s right there in the logo.

    • Jimbo says:

That’s true. The first game they reviewed was Hoop & Stick ’74 iirc.

    • Muzman says:

They caused their first major controversy by putting Hide and Seek over Cup and Ball in’75’s year end round up, I seem to recall. Their love of indie multiplayer titles at the time caused some consternation with the wood turners, who tended to dominate in other publications (of course, back then ‘indie’ meant a game predominantly played by Indians)

    • Mr_Day says:

I remember the telegraph comment shit storm that happened when United Partic-thistles announced their DRM plans for clockwork train sets.

If you didn’t consistently send letters to their marketing department telling them you had bought it legitimately, the train would explode.

  24. dragonhunter21 says:

God rest you merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay,
Remember Horace, beary one, was born upon this day
To keep us writing articles! Never will he betray,
This brings tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, oh tidings of comfort and joy…

  25. toomany says:

Merry Christmas RPS. Well done on another great year for games and gamers.

  26. JB says:

Thanks for the great year – to the RPS hivemind and all you comment-larvae. Here’s looking forward to another great year!

Also, Merry Christmas to all who’ll be celebrating it!

  27. Navagon says:

Happy Hogswatch, guys! May the 2011th RPS ride the tubes as triumphantly as the last.

  28. Farsearcher says:

    Merry Christmas RPS

I stumbled across this site earlier in the year and since then its changed the way I’ve thought about games.

  29. D.H. Lawrence says:

Merry Christmas RPS!! My favorite gaming site BY FAR.

  30. Qjuad says:

    Merry xmas RPS

  31. Wizlah says:

Merry Christmas RPS and its readership. And a special yuletide prayer for harried parent gamers everywhere, searching for that one scant hour to play in during the festive season.

  32. Edgar the Peaceful says:

Thanks to John, Jim, Kieron, Alec & Quinns for fostering such an intelligent, warm, fun place to hang around.

Thanks to the RPS community for making the comments sections as readable as the articles themselves.

    Merry Christmas.

  33. Sunjammer says:

Next year… 2011! Let’s go! To the COLONIES!

  34. Untitled says:

Hey, merry christmas to the whole of RPS, it’s been a fantastic year and my heart genuinely sunk when I read you won’t be back until the 3rd! When my student loan payment comes through I’ll be subscribing. Hopefully you can get more articles on space station 13 up? :D MERRY CHRISTMAS xxxxxxxxxxxx

  35. Muzman says:

A bold prediction: 2011 will be the Year of the PC. It will return to being undisputed king of the gaming heap as it was ehhhhh in about ’98-99, with the added fun of stomping on the ostensible competition in order to do it. I don’t want to hear any stats on how it’s always been relevent in the intervening time. Sure it has. But I mean there won’t be quite so much regurgitating of the company line that we used to hear from our erstwhile PC developers about console money and relevance. Not so much “We had to bugger up the feel of the game completely and farm out the port to a bunch of underfunded hacks trying to get their own game up some day”. Not so much protecting the delicate sensibilities of console fans/backers by shyly placing PC support down the list or removing it altogether until a later date. It’ll be more “We are releasing on PC. If you want us to support your quaint, limited purpose tv box thing, sure we’ll see if we can squeeze you in”.

That or everything’s going to be on iphone or something.

Anyway, cheers to the gang. Rest up RPS. You’ll probably need it.

  36. Flimgoblin says:

Merry Christmas, glad to hear it’s all working out – good work done well being rewarded and all that.

  37. durns says:

Happy christmas and new year chaps! How about something to get your audience involved in the new year – the RPS game creation series was fantastic and definitely kept people involved. The direct interaction with the writers is something that absolutely sets this site apart.

    That and the fantastic writing

and covering topics that noone else does

and the lack of spam in the comments threads

and the actually civil discussions in the comments threads.

Yeah, #1 games site of the year.

  38. Tei says:

Well hurra for you guys, and this site. Is a oasis in the desert

  39. Deepo says:

Merry Christmas! Also looking forward to more details in the nail-biting saga of Jim, Podlington and the Word!

  40. piippo says:

Best gaming related site there is.

  41. Will Tomas says:

Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! Have a great holiday everyone, and thank you all 5 RPSers for another great year.

  42. Dodoman says:

    Merry Christmas guys :D

I say we party here, in this thread, unitl our lovely hosts come back.

    Who’s with me?

  44. SuperNashwan says:

Who would’ve thought high quality, independent games journalism could be successful, eh? Someone should tell Gamespot, IGN et al… Congratulations guys and long may it continue.

  45. lethu says:

    In after the Spam Bot.

Long Live RPS!! The only gaming related news website I read, no kidding. Come back stronger, mightier, happy holidays!

  46. JackShandy says:

Is there ever going to be a conclusion to the Cardboard Children Cluedo Challenge, then? Judging after the break, or was that forsaken?

Either way; a resounding <3 to all of you.

  47. theplot says:

First time poster here – just wanted to thank you for another great year of content on RPS.

To the community as well – for making the comment threads more fun to read than just about any other gaming-related site out there.

    Keep up the good work!

  48. Antares says:

    Hey gents,

I’ve been lurking on the site for the last year or so (IIRC I found you lot through the amazing solium infernum writeup). I love the articles, the comments, the general laidback attitude from the entire community, and even, God forgive me, the terrible, terrible puns.

I finally subscribed this december after landing my first stable job and I’m glad to help you guys out. Here’s to another great year!

  49. Danny says:

Enjoy the social obligations guys! If I win the lottery on December 31st (roughly 30 mil), I’ll donate 10% to the good cause.

Well, it might be slightly less if I actually win.

  50. Miles of the Machination says:

What is the name of this image, and where can I worship it?

    • adonf says:

If you mean the image posted by DrazharLn, then it’s from Citizen Kane (You should watch it if you haven’t and you’re into movies, it’s kind of the Citizen Kane of films)

    • Miles of the Machination says:

I meant the image posted on this article from Rock Paper Shotgun, it’s kind of the Rock Paper Shotgun of the internet.
