Athlete’s Fleet: Star Battle

Question, hot shot. What’s the most popular user-created map on the European StarCraft II servers right now?

I bet you have no idea. I bet a single bead of sweat just appeared on your forehead. Ah, youth! You’re cute. Here’s the answer: It’s Star Battle, a 6v6 Defense of the Ancients-style mod that uses not fantastic heroes, but sluggish, superpowered space-ships. So, Defense of the… Space.. ncients? Anyway, it looks swell.

I stopped playing StarCraft 2 months ago, but if anything’s going to lure me back, it’s this. Just one of the nice twists is that cannon fodder AI creeps are actually spawned automatically by the players’ ships themselves. But really, the ponderous, positioning-focused combat just looks like so much fun. Here, this is the video that brought Star Battle to my attention. You can skip straight to 2:20 to see some of that.

And in case you thought there was any getting away from StarCraft II’s micro, here’s a video on how to do some movement tricks.

Mmm, modding. Gaw’ bless you, PC gaming. Here’s the link to the Star Battle Wiki again. As for how to play it, simply search for it using like you would a custom map. StarCraft II’s Galaxy editor simply treats everything like a custom map, you know, which means you can download everything in-game with the greatest of ease.

Starcraft’s custom maps are so much fun that it’s easy to just sink in to playing them and never giving the proper (and incredibly daunting) multiplayer a go. But oh my god, once you’ve got into it, nothing beats it.

Speaking of which, I know we had a forum thread ages ago, but anyone fancy playing?

Also, has anyone got any idea when those custom maps that the actual SC2 development team were making are coming out?

    Does it grow on you?

It’s ok, I’m getting my coat

  3. coldvvvave says:

Is there a Speed reference or am I seeing things?

Also, wordpress is saying I’m posting comments too often.

  4. Brumisator says:

    *boots up SC2*

  5. Rich says:

I just looked up the current price of Starcraft 2. It’s still thirty bloody pounds, at best.

  6. 2guncohen says:

you gotta love 1:41 in the second trailer!

  7. omicron1 says:

I demand to see a Homeworld mod of this mod.

  8. Pijama says:

That is the reason why I bought starcraft.

And holy crap, I didn’t even get into custom gaming yet… : |

    Where to start?

  9. Choca says:

Tried a few round of this today, it’s pretty fun although it requires a lot of teamplay, which makes it kinda “moron unfriendly” and therefore “ unfriendly”.

But it’s a blast when you have a good team.

Also the fact that every news site is talking about it is a pretty funny example of the power of internet, since the thing has been at the top of the most played custom maps for a few months apparently.

  10. mcnubbins says:

Has anyone made custom maps with direct controls? I seem to remember in a prerelease video they showed a map where you controlled a ghost in third person.

  11. Polysynchronicity says:

    Ah, good ‘ol TotalBiscuit.

  12. OpT1mUs says:

Yes, I have the idea what is it.

    This is old news.

  13. sana says:

    Isn’t TotalBiscuit a regular RPS reader/commenter?

  14. MadTinkerer says:

So it’s GSB but you can move the ships manually. ;)

  15. Tagert says:

I played this last night and I -love- it. :D

  16. FriendlyFire says:

This reminds me of how nice Nexus: The Jupiter Incident would be in multiplayer if anybody actually played it.

    *Sheds a tear*
