Let Me Introduce You To Total War: Shogun 2

My flag is the taller! This planet is OURS!

Yesterday the good Jim Rossignol brought you his preview impressions of Total War: Shogun 2. Today you can take a step further toward experiencing the game, by watching its three-and-a-half minute opening CGI video mcdoodah. It’s very pretty, and of course in no way representative of the game. But focus on the pretty. You like pretty thing, yes? Stare into my trailer. See it’s pretty pictures. That’s it. Stare deeply in. Deeeeeeeply in.

  1. Chris D says:

    My, that is pretty.

So I just curl up next to these onions, yeah?

    • Man Raised by Puffins says:

Huh, it’s a bit cramped in ‘ere. Maybe there’ll be a touch more room if I stick this strategically placed apple in my mouth…

  2. Maxheadroom says:

Was anybody else waiting for “Samurai Jack, Gotta get back, back to the past (watch out)” to kick in while watching that?

  3. Edgar the Peaceful says:

Sounds like a perilous scenario that I wouldn’t recommend to even the most intrepid sexual adventurer

    • Novotny says:

Alas, Edgar, that which you feared is forever deleted. I can whisper it for competitive rates $$$

  4. jonfitt says:

Any news on a demo date?

  5. Om says:

If I stare into the trailer is it also staring back at me?

  6. Blaq says:

That fight scene looked incredibly realistic. More than any other animated fight scene I have seen, at any rate.

    • Tokamak says:

That’s what I thought too when I saw it. Very fluid and realistic animations for sure. Must have been some very elaborate mocapping.

I wonder if the in-game battle animations will have the same attention to detail (probably not).

  7. Emperor_Jimmu says:

    Is there an Amaterasu unit?

    • PleasingFungus says:

Alternately: do any of the units have a powerful Golden Fury attack?

That was a very silly game.

    • Emperor_Jimmu says:

As a biologist I can tell you that wolves really do have a powerful Golden Fury attack; however they rarely use it, for PR reasons.

Okami was gleefully silly. I will defend it to the end, even on RPS.

  8. durns says:

Wait – did you guys fix the alt-text on your screenshots? I’m in Firefox and hovering over the pretty pictures shows me your secret funnies now – hallelujah!

    • Novotny says:

OOoh! nice find. I’ve never seen an alt text here before. BTW, I can confirm its working in Chrome. By way of celebration, I’m going to disable Adblock just for RPS.

    • Novotny says:

OH GOD! The adverts PAIN ME! I hope you realise I’m doing this out of love.

    • durns says:

You used to have to either install a certain fox-addon to make it visible, or go into the image properties to see them, but RPS have been making secret image-funnies for years now.

    • Novotny says:

Well yes, I knew that: wasn’t prepared to use IE though or bother with an add-on just for the sake of the funny.

    • durns says:

      You’ve hurt the Funny’s feelings. You’re a big meanie.

    • Novotny says:

It’s a minor promotion, but this previously little meanie would like to thank all those puppies he’s kicked over all these years. And now off to sit on a cat.

  9. Magrippinho says:

Near the end, I imagined that guy’s dying words to be:

    “The siege…
    Artificial Intelligence…
    Still sucks…”

  10. Fumarole says:

PC Gamer gave it a 92%

    link to pcgamer.com

    • Novotny says:

Ye gads! Still, my cynicism hat has just secured itself ever more fastly. I await further enlightenment.

Edit:: so, er, what were they playing, if our Lord-in-chief Herr Rossignol only had access to a limited beta? I suspect PC Gamer only had access to the same build, frankly. Please feel free to correct me anyone, particularly his Jimness should he read this.

    • Dozer says:

What number did they give it for Excitement and for System Requirements?

    • Zwebbie says:

      92%? It’s worse than Empire?

    • stahlwerk says:

      It’s worse than Empire?

yes, part 47 of 50 is not so tight.

    • battles_atlas says:

Its 10% for the postie delivering it with a smile, cover art gets 25%, 5% for nevertheless disappointingly thin instruction manual, 50% for the cellophane wrap obviously, and the madatory 2% for the desktop shortcut.

So going by that 92% presumably means that it doesn’t launch, but is otherwise awesome.

    • Witrim says:

It doesn’t mean it’s worse then empire, it’s just that empire had way to high rating.

  11. Dozer says:

Very efficient, the Japanese samurai armies. All their soldiers had sails strapped to their backs so they could run faster with less food.

  12. GenBanks says:

I watched this last night before bed, and then had a Shogun themed dream. I was a Japanese warrior scaling a wall, and I was trying to cut the arm off of an enemy who was attempting to push me off, but my blade wasn’t sharp enough and my sawing was ineffective.

  13. Jimbo says:

FFFUUU! I had £20 on Lawrence of Arabia.

  14. stahlwerk says:

Something about English/American voice direction that bugged me for some time now: Why do non-english speaking people always get “translated” with a (stereotypical) accent? They’re talking to each other, clearly they know how to do so without straining their tongues?

    Meanest offender yet: Metro 2033.

    • Novotny says:

Vot do you mean, Herr Stahlverk?

    • stahlwerk says:

How crazy vould zat be, ja? If I talk like zis all ze time, even to mein parents! You vould sink I vas kaputt in Mein Head!

  15. WMain00 says:

    Nice CGI.

    HO HO HO!!

    I’ll show myself out.

  16. Vinraith says:

I wonder if the design priorities are as backwards as the name!

Thank you, I’ll be here all week. Tip your waitress.

  17. Dreamhacker says:

Love that backstab at the end. There may be a “way of the warrior” but honorable fighting has no place in it :)

  18. Xercies says:

  19. Squirrelfanatic says:

Winter! Spring! Winter! It’s like the “Back to the Future” of seasons. So confused.

  20. ezekiel2517 says:

My inner Mount & Blade child wept when he saw so many men charging a castle without a shield.

  21. Zhou says:

I’ll be honest, I’ve pre-ordered the bejeesus out of this. Empire had its faults but I still had a lot of fun conquering the entire world as the marathan confederacy (every continent, yeahhhhh).

If Shogun has an even slight improvement in terms of battle AI over Empire, and the focus shifts more to melee rather than fudging rifle men (and hilariously overpowered mortars with top-level shells…) then I will be a happy camper. It looks like sex and it will eat my free time like a sumo on a calorie binge. I’m sold.

  22. Novotny says:

I have buy all this shoe and am YES all over my face EVER NOW!

  23. cytokindness says:

Does anyone know what that figure-eight-shaped fan thing that the general was waving is? I keep seeing it and want to know. :(

  24. Vitruality says:

Wow, Japan sure seems to have unpredictable weather cycles…

    • Navagon says:

Creative Assembly are based in the UK. So they probably thought Japan’s probably the same.

  25. Porkolt says:

    Where’s the giant enemy crab?
