john why is there meat in the server

We appear to be having some trouble with the servers. Nothing to worry about, I reckon! I’m sure RPS will be back on its feet and up to business as usual in no time.

Until then, please enjoy the music after the jump.

    April fools?

  2. Stense says:

Probably a sign of an invasion from the tech savvy Velociraptors that are going at website infrastructure by smearing jam over the servers, for their own evil schemes. Damn them.

  3. BooleanBob says:

Phew/ For a moment I saw the pic and thought that RPS was going the (sad, sad) way of UK:R.

If only ’42’ was the answer to either of these tags I think we’d have solved the great problem of life, the universe & everything.

Gah just found out, wondering what to do with my collection of swirls now : (

  4. Meneth says:

We need more posts tagged as “why is it on fire again”

    • McDan says:

More things should be on fire in general, it’s a good time.

    • BooleanBob says:

“Of course you should fight fire with fire. You should fight everything with fire.”

This is what happens when Quinns swivels on his chair too hard. Pick the damn thing up and reboot it.

That is some fantastic music (another reason to be an anglophile.)

  7. Kaira- says:

That picture reminds me of Life on Mars, and it horrifies me greatly.

  8. xGryfter says:

That’s a real BBC thing? I always thought it was just something made for Life on Mars. Between the Music and the creepy clown doll I don’t know how you guys weren’t permanently scarred as children. I guess it’s a good way to get your children to go to bed on time before the evil clown doll comes back to take your soul.

    • Malibu Stacey says:

They used to show it back when I were a lad in the 80’s if you stayed up too late past when BBC1 “switched off”.
It’s been redundant since they started showing loads of repeats of their shows with sign language added during the night and/or switching to News 24.

    • Vague-rant says:

Wow, you must be really young. It was still in use in my youth, back in the heady mid-90s, too.

    • Shadowcat says:

If it wasn’t a real thing, it wouldn’t have been nearly so good an inclusion.

It’s not a patch on this, of course:

    • robtoo says:

You haven’t been paying attention. We were all scarred for life.

    • xGryfter says:

Not young just not from the UK, we had the equivalent here in the states (normally some kind of waving flag bs, or eagle footage with patriotic music or a similar bar pattern and the station logo) in the 80s so the concept isn’t new to me I just found that picture to be unusually creepy for something so mundane so when I first saw it on Life on Mars I just figured it was made for the show. Now I know otherwise, and I still find that picture creepy.

Same here. I live in South America so the reference completely flew over my head, but I still found the girl and the clown to be one of the best things in the show.

I’ll remember forever the “Do you not like me with my clown? I can see I make you frown.” line, which is quite a feat since it’s competing with all those Gene Hunt quotes.

  9. Alexander Norris says:

Does anyone know what the tracks in the video are actually called? They’re really good and I need to add them to Fallout: New Vegas.

  10. Stuart Walton says:

I’m old enough to remember seeing this on the telly. There were times when there was literally nothing on the TV. You would still leave it on though, just in case.

That’s until we got home micros \o/

  11. Ruadhan says:

So what you need is a new 503 page, right? Right? :)

  12. Fwiffo says:

Using the arcane powers of tabbed browsing, I shall be playing this music all day.

  13. Eddeman says:

Meat in the server eh? I guess Mr. Walker is trying to find out if you can get yourself a nice meal by removing the CPU-cooler and replacing it with a juicy steak.

  14. AdamK117 says:

Classic BBC tuneing card there RPS =)

  15. Gap Gen says:

    My, is it Jape-ril again?

  16. Urael says:

I’m old enough to remember seeing this a lot in my youth. That bloody clown….I don’t hold with this whole ‘clowns are scary’ rubbish that propagates nowadays but by god that IS a scary-ass mother-diddling clown.

    • Chris D says:

I can’t say I find the clown particularly scary. The little girl, on the other hand, is terrifying.

  17. frenz0rz says:

I wish I was old enough back then to come home pissed at 4am and listen to this on TV.

    • Phydaux says:

Ha at 4am it would usually have been static.
Firstly you’d have God save the Queen then maybe Pages from Ceefax with this sort of music, the test card with this music, the test card with a test tone, then static. But some times it just went straight to that test tone.

The test tone was a horrible thing and woke me from many a drunken sleep. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeee….. and so on.

  18. lorddon says:

    Why did they misspell color?

    • Gap Gen says:

I was wondering this as I turned on the taps this morning while observing a fried egg on the pavement by the car park outside. I considered writing to my Minister of Parliament about it, but I was out of A4 paper.

  19. ManaTree says:

Oooh! Oooh! Let the awesome begin.
