So that next-generation Unreal Engine video was fairly impressive, but getting into the depths of what the tools actually do – and how much of that is actually DX11 stuff – has had to wait until this video over on Kotaku. Real-time beards! That’s the fucking future, right there.

That would be great for an Middle-Eastern Tribes style MMO – Measure someones experience by the size of their beards!

But are there real-time hats?

Epic’s next game will be a war-themed beard simulator.

@ FalseMyrmidon: You know, I actually might just buy a game called “Beards of War.”

Please let that be a hint that there might be a good Blade Runner-game coming? The first part certainly looked as if..
Also: Not excited about that whole Blur-stuff…but I’m glad to see they’ve finally figured out a way to make bloom less annoying and even pretty..
And also: ooh, shiny!
05/04/2011 at 18:52 Jetsetlemming says:
That video actually did make me excited about technical features. Certainly an accomplishment.
05/04/2011 at 18:56 OTD Razor says:
I’d be excited for an original Unreal remake with this engine. Sadly, that’s not gonna happen =(
05/04/2011 at 19:56 Navagon says:
While the original Unreal was great, I don’t know how advantageous this engine would be to that game now. Sure, it would be a fair bit prettier, but then that would have been true enough with the original Unreal 3 Engine back in 2007.
05/04/2011 at 18:56 A-Scale says:
God you guys missed a huge opportunity for a joke title. I’m seriously disappointed.
05/04/2011 at 18:58 Wixard says:
Seems a little underwhelming considering this graphics improvement may very well be 5+ years on from the last console.
I also have a feeling that in the mean time a PC AAA game (if they continue to make them:P) may very well match this in technical feats of daring doo.
Im looking at you, sequel to metro 2033.

So when do we get real-time shaving?
Unreal 4, sponsored by Gillette

Might be underwhelming to you, but to developers, this is amazing.
UE3 was great, but it definitely needed a better front end and tool system. This looks fucking fantastic.
05/04/2011 at 19:00 felisc says:
they should stop putting music from 1995 when showing off contemporary technical features.
05/04/2011 at 19:26 iniudan says:
Agree, they need to put music that sound more like the 80s.

05/04/2011 at 20:07 Adam says:
Amazing video, but come on, embed the video, don’t give Kotaku the juice, they already have enough.
06/04/2011 at 01:38 Rhin says:
Or you could be a decent human being and credit whichever source of material you use. Kotaku seems to have negotiated some kind of exclusive video montage from Epic, so embedding a video with KOTAKU(tm) intro is a bit dirty.

Well, it’s one louder, isn’t it? It’s not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You’re on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you’re on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?

You’re linking to kotaku? Their new site design is the only reason I’m reading THIS website.
I know better than to activate javascript over there: I’ll automatically purchase facebook stock, read another story about the editor’s baby poo, and get lost in a tv-tropes-style time vortex, reading the same article again and again, uselessly.
On the topic, beard technology sounds like everything that is wrong with the modern manshoot. This is another reason why I always pick the female character. Their legs have been waxed.
06/04/2011 at 09:38 roryok says:
The only reason? You’re just killing time until they relent in the face of your strongly worded emails, then you’ll be out of here? In the words of the late Michael Gough from Diablo “Stay a while and listen!”
06/04/2011 at 06:33 Zyrusticae says:
I have to say… real-time beards really ARE the future.
By which I am, of course, referring to actual hair rendering that doesn’t fuggin’ suck. For the longest time we’ve been using fake planes to “simulate” (har, har) hair, so seeing something that’s as many steps forward as the rendering in this trailer is very nice indeed.
We’re still a long way from accurately flowing manes, but at least we’re getting there.
