Club Together: Dungeon Siege III Trailer

I know I'm cynical, but caw that kaleidoscopic sword effect is a bit pretty.

There’s a new trailer for arcade hack’n’slash RPG Dungeon Siege III, featuring footage of the game’s four player co-op mode. Tell you what, as much as a deviation from Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 as this is, with four characters explosively disassembling monsters on the same screen and with the camera tilted just so, it finally starts to look like a Dungeon Siege game. How about that! Come see what I mean.

“Once, they were orphans. Today, they are warriors,” says the voiceover. Thoughtful of them to tell us, as half the time I can’t see what the crap is going on underneath all those particle and lighting effects. Also: a crow made of crows! Wow.

  1. MasterBoo says:

Did I hear well? Is there a character called Anchovy?

    • darthmajor says:

Their’s is a heavy burden indeed. Captain Anchovy to the rescue! Reminds me of Freakazoid.

the spam comment may be deleted, but I shall try and remember to use “something unexpected surprise” in future comments.

  2. Bhazor says:

“Once, they were orphans Now they are warriors”
So violence makes your parents grow back?
Explains what Batman’s been up to at least.

    • ScubaMonster says:

No, just being an orphan makes you bitter and angry, and therefore drives you to kill monsters and collect loot.

    • Jake says:

Bhazor is right, it’s poor writing. It should be: ‘once, they were orphans, now they are warrior orphans!’

And they should call the game Warrior Orphans so there is no confusion.

    • Bret says:

      No, it’s cool.

They got enough loot drops to buy True Rezes for their folks.

  3. Kingmarzo says:

    Witcher 2 will be better

    • Saiwyn says:

The Witcher 2 will be better
This is not a game for me

    • Zepposlav says:

Ofc, it will be better than this.

    • Tengil says:

This is a straight-forward action RPG though so you should really be comparing it to Diablo and the like.

    • Nick says:

can we stop that fucking awful attempt at a meme please?

    • Outsider says:

You realize that being cranky about it will only make people do it more, don’t you?

    • Chalee says:

      Outsider is right.

      What a shame.

    • Tams80 says:

      We will attempt a meme
      Nick will be mad

    • Nick says:

Well, if people want to look like unfunny cretins, be my guest. I tried.

  4. Aemony says:

I actually find the visuals somewhat… annoyingly old… Will the game really look like this? Because it feels like we’re back in the ’02, ’04 era.

    • Mungrul says:

One could almost say it looks like a 360 game, but that’s cross-platform development for you.

    • Saiwyn says:

Mount and Blade sees your comment and knocks it unconscious with a stick of twattage.

That being said, I will be too busy playing Warband to bother with this game until it hits the bargain bin.

    • Aemony says:

      @Mungrul: Yeah, I guess so…

@Saiwyn: Well… Mount & Blade is more “balanced” in it’s visuals and looks overally a lot better with its “HDR, FSAA, depth of field, soft particles, tone mapping, and many other effects” and that also has the perfect excuse of being developed by the indie developers Tale Worlds.

That really isn’t comparable with the latest title from Obsidian and Square Enix… The models in this video just looks so horribly dated, from a time were models was ugly as hell while the effects and environment around them was pretty… I didn’t expect this result from developers like Obisidan… Hopefully the game will, in fact, have far better visuals when it finally hits, but for now I fear for it…

From fans disappointed in DA2 statements about the game I expected at least something at a similar visual level, but this looks even worse than DAO ever did… :S

    • noodlecake says:

I think as well as making cross platfrom games, developers have realised that 95% of PC owners don’t spend more than £300-£400 on their rig. Making a game that would make most people’s computers explode isn’t really that smart if you want to make any money!

  5. simoroth says:

That was all just visual noise to me. Far too much movement and contrast.

    What were they thinking?

    • Bhazor says:

      They were thinking
“This is a fast paced action game. Lets make it look like a fast paced action game”

      I know, crazy right?

  6. Sceptrum says:

Definitely getting that game for my PS3 when the price drops. Just seems to be a “couch-coop” game to me.

    • zergrush says:

Same here, getting some Dark Allaince / Champions of Norrath vibes from this game, will probably be pretty decent for some mindless hacking and/or slashing.

  7. Moleman says:

    Prediction: Meta-crow final boss.

Also: That’s a lot of lens flare. Say what you will about modern day Blizzard, but nothing I’ve seen about Diablo 3 obscures the action to that degree. Although, is anyone really surprised that Obsidian has produced another game with an iffy looking end-user experience? I’m not even sure I can name a game of theirs that just felt right when you were playing it, without some element of struggle against the interface. God, who there thought they could pull off an action RPG of the Diablo sort, where responsiveness and clarity of action are pretty much entry requirements?

  8. Balm says:

it finally starts to look like a Dungeon Siege game

And this is good? From what i remember previous two games were so-so boring ActionRPGs.

    • Froibo says:

Thank you! My friends raved about the original and I just don’t get it.

  9. Jimbo says:

There’s an hour long video of 2 player co-op on Giant Bomb. The game looks pretty good, in a dumb fun kind of way – Dungeon Siege was always pretty dumb though, so that’s ok.

  10. Crow says:

Why are all DS3 trailers so dark that you cant see a think?

    • arccos says:

Its so you can’t Xerox the trailers on a copy machine without it looking all messed up. Kind of like red paper.

  11. Doesntmeananything says:

The animation is… well, it’s there but… oh, I can see what the characters are supposed to do, however… Oh.

  12. DeepSleeper says:

This is a game I am buying. I’m hoping for a big dumb monster bash with pretty colors.
And I like that one of the characters is Fantasy Teleporting Kenny Rogers. So there’s that.

  13. KauhuK says:

I’m hoping that this will be a decent action rpg. I’m itching for diablolike game. Too bad Sacred 2 doesnt work on my computer no matter what and torchlight gets boring fast. Titan Quest is fun but I dont like to play it anymore.

    • zergrush says:

Sacred 2 gets boring way faster than Torchlight IMO, you should get the much better first one if you haven’t played it yet. Or just try some mods on Torchlight, they manage to extend its life quite well.

But if you don’t mind the not-very-good-graphics, Din’s Curse is probably the finest non-Diablo clicky hacky and slashy game there is.

    • KauhuK says:

I would play the first sacred but it has some performance problems and wont run well. I also tried the demo of Din’s Curse but didnt like it. Maybe I should try it again.

    • Kdansky says:

Torchlight modding is just such a pain in the ass. Is there a mod that reworks the skills so they are actually fun to use together instead of variations of “kill monsters you click on with differently coloured particle effects”?

    • nicobr22 says:

Did you try the Median XL mod for Diablo 2? Diablo 2 with Median XL is by far the best action RPG game.
Din’s Curse is pretty good too.

  14. Outsider says:

I’ll probably purchase this game simply because I’ve played the heck out of Titan’s Quest, and Diablo 3 feels like it’s been in production for 20 years and they still absolutely refuse to even hint at a possible release quarter (or year, even). This will need to fill my co-op hack-n-slash for the moment.

    • Rii says:

Blizzard just announced that the D3 beta will be kicking off in Q3 2011.

    • Creeping Death says:

In relation to a D3 release date I read a news post tis evening that claims they are starting a beta this summer with aims for a release of late this year/Q1 next

    • Outsider says:

Oh, thanks guys. I have missed this announcement. They’re not so good at updating their own Diablo 3 site FAQ, which still says nothing. Q3 2011 is good for a beta. Hopefully this means end of the year.

    Earl-Grey says:

Ah, Dungeon Siege, still as uncharismatic as possible, I see.

  16. Noodle says:

Wow. Just compare that to the Dungeon Siege 2 Trailer

Say what you like about the game, that trailer was seven shades of awesome.

    • Basilicus says:

Ooh. I hear you can buy Dungeon Siege 2 on Steam for only $50. And you get Dungeon Siege and Dungeon Siege 3 for free!!! Or something.

    • Kdansky says:

      Camera. Never. Stops. Shaking.

  17. anduin1 says:

Wish I could be excited about this series but whenever I did play it, it felt like a chore and I got bored within an hour. I used to play Diablo 3 to death but lately these action rpg type games are just not appealing unless they have some really really captivating story.

  18. Shaz says:

I enjoyed DS 1&2. Can’t say they were deep games, or anything, but they were still fun for me.

Something about DS3, though…. meh. I’m so terribly uninterested. I really don’t know why. Maybe it’s because I never cared to play either of the first two multiplayer, and I wouldn’t be interested in that for the 3rd, either. Ah well.

  19. drewski says:

It’s a little dark for my taste, and a little eager in the lighting effects, but overall it looks cool. Not like Hlaf Life cool, but at least Torchlight cool, which is fine by me.

  20. Lars Westergren says:

I’m looking forward to this game. Diablo action, Obsidian storytelling, and co-op too.

  21. Njordsk says:

I loved DS1 and 2, but this doesn’t interest me much.

It’s all dark, I love colors and charming universes

    • Lars Westergren says:

This is all from a cave. There are lots of screenshots from above ground which look a lot brighter.

Color and charming universe is still there I think. From what I’ve seen this isn’t very grimdark?

  22. arccos says:

    “Entropic magic?”

    That’s a rather lukewarm power, isn’t it?

    • drewski says:

Dunno. If one could make any enemy instantly reach maximum entropy, that would be a pretty fun disintegration spell.

  23. MajorManiac says:

Looks a bit like Gauntlet 2, but in 3d.

  24. oliverh72 says:

This looks like ‘Dark & Gritty (TM)’ retheme of Torchlight to me. With none of Torchlight’s charm or color. Frankly, if you can’t see to the edge of the screen, methinks you’re hiding something.
