The Witcher 2 Has Four Launch Trailers

The villagers later admitted to going over the top with their scarecrow.

Oh, this is just odd. Ahead of The Witcher 2’s release date tomorrow CD Projekt have released a total of four launch trailers across four different sites. Why don’t you watch them all (and rate them from best to worst, or something?) while I consult the video game handbook as to whether this is allowed. They’re all after the jump.

  1. crainey92 says:

Saw these already on VG247 earlier very good indeed, I’m all gitty for Witcher 2 tehe. I have been looking forward to this for so long and have recently played through The Witcher (Steroid edition) then proceeded to read the associated book “The Last Wish” which is also very good.
I think in one of those trailers it’s cited something along the lines of could be the best pc game of all time, I certainly hope so!

  2. Teddy Leach says:

The amount of trailers that get released nowadays are a bit silly. There should probably be a tag for posts containing many trailers.

  3. KauhuK says:

I’m trying to finish the first witcher. It’s good game but at the same time quite awful (combat, moving). posted my copy of Witcher 2 last friday and I’m hoping to get it this week (as I live in Finland it takes 1-3 days more to come). I’m hoping it corrects things what made the first one so frustrating.

    • sonofsanta says:

Bloody Amazon are yet to dispatch mine, but have moved into the annoying “preparing to dispatch so you can’t cancel or change” stage, thus preventing me from cancelling and buying from GoG to ensure I get the game by the weekend.

    • groghog says:

finished the first one yesterday, and I couldn’t help but feel the combat was just getting in the way of the story. it could have been a platformer for all i cared, as long as i got to the conversations part.

    • Rii says:

I’m still knee-deep in the original too. No rush though, I need a new PC to properly appreciate TW2 anyway. And on the bright side, there’ll probably be a patch or two by the time I get to it. Fly my paid beta testers, fly!

  4. Kaira- says:

One for every ending of TW1 and one if you don’t import your save. Or something like that. [/tinfoil]

  5. Sinkoristo says:

    Less than 20 hours left.

After 3,5 years of waiting, it’s about damn time.

  6. Pop says:

Four trailers?! Was its existence leaked?

    • Erd says:

I laughed. But on-topic, this feels like a benign form of pre-order exclusives to make people visit certain sites.

  7. Lukasz says:

so much hype a dark side of my soul wishes the game to fail miserably.

    and i do love TW1.

    • CaLe says:

4 reviews all in the 90s so far. I don’t think this one’s gonna fail

    • paterah says:

Sometimes it’s good to embrace what is hyped to the skies and actually delivers :P

  8. faelnor says:

Today I was born in 1902, 1920 and 1914. Also, I suppose Gamespot immediately assumed that I was almost decrepit from that shirt I’m wearing.

    • Erd says:

Why do I get the feeling the age checks are more for any glimpses of nudity than any of the violence?

    • Zanchito says:

Erd: Because titties may lead to sin (although a better kind of sin than crotches) and thus corrupt your immortal soul. Violence, on the other side, at best can make you instantly closer to God in Heaven. Unless you go to Hell, in which case GOOD RIDDANCE!

  9. GenBanks says:

I need help! I don’t have enough spare money to buy both…
So do I get Fable 3 or Witcher 2?
I ask because I want to take advantage of the preorder deals rather than wait for reviews…

    • crainey92 says:

      Witcher 2.

    • Edrisch says:

The Witcher 2, i played Fable 3 on 360 it’s really boring, if you want a good RPG (witch Fable 3 isn’t) get The Wticher 2.

    • Zarx says:

      The Witcher 2 definitely

    • Sinkoristo says:

I’ve played Fable 3 on Xbox 360 and it’s possibly one of the worst games I’ve played this gen. And I’m not kidding. Even Molyneux himself said it was rubbish..

      Get The Witcher 2!

    • GenBanks says:

Wow haha, didn’t expect that to be settled so conclusively. Witcher 2 it is!
Now to decide between GOG and Steam…

    • JohnnyMaverik says:

      Witcher 2

Edit: Well seeing as you’ve decided on the game but not the place of purchase. With GOG 100% of the money goes to CD Projekt, you get an exclusive 200 page art book + all the other stuff like soundtrack, making of vids etc… and a free copy of Gothic 2, unless your insane and want one of the other games/already have a copy of Gothic 2.

With Steam you get the game and all the special stuff minus the art book and free game, CD Projekt still get a fair splash of cash because Steam doesn’t rip devs off, but not as much as they’d get through a purchase on GOG.

Really the difference is minor unless you really want that art book and/or a copy of Gothic 2… or one of the other games… if your insane, One thing worth note however is that the GOG version is 100% DRM free where as Steam of course isn’t, so if you have a brother/sister/somebody you live with who would want to play it, it’s like the good old days where you could buy game and share your copy, instead of it being locked to your account.

As somebody who up until a couple of years ago lived with two siblings who also played games, I find all of that extremely frustrating, not so much with Steam because when I buy through Steam I know it’s being locked to my account, but when I buy a disc, get it home and it tells me I have to create an account, register my key to be able to register the bonus content on the little slip of paper that turns out to be worthless anyway and then locks my copy to my account, that’s damn annoying.

There again GOG aren’t accustomed to organising highly anticipated, timed launches, so I’d expect less complete initial cock ups with Steam than GOG, although on the other hand Steam aren’t offering pre-load for this game so depending on your bandwidth (it’s around a 10GB DL I believe) it may take a while.

So yea… if you’d like a copy that can be shared, an art book, Gothic 2/a crap RPG *puts on my flame proof troll jacket* and a pre-load, go GOG, if you want an assurance that you’ll almost definitely be playing pretty soon after the official launch (they rarely miss it by more than an hour or two these days), depending of course on your ability to DL 10GB’s of data fairly quickly, go Steam, if neither of the pros or cons have convinced you, toss a coin, and remember which ever service you buy it from it’ll likely be on a ridiculously good sale on the other with in 6 months providing a cheep back up copy, not to mentioned the boxed versions that will likely be sitting around for 10 quid/20 bucks/relatively cheep number of you’re country/regions currency for a quality video game, by then.

      Bloody hell I wrote a lot O.o

Last tip, I went GOG, so if you want to be part of my slightly long winded but undoubtedly stylish and undeniably cool club, then you know where to go.

    • VelvetFistIronGlove says:

    • Cinek says:

Get GOG edition. It’s DRM free and you’ll have some added bonuses without feeding Valve with your cash.

    • GenBanks says:

Nice, good job convincing me hehe… I was leaning heavily towards the steam version but I just bought Witcher 2 on GOG :) (with Gothic 2!)

and actually JohnnyMaverick, turns out there is preloading for the GOG version! I’m downloading now. May end up playing sooner than I would have via Steam…

    • Tengil says:

Buy it on GOG, you can circumvent the regional pricing and you get some extras.

    • Betamax says:

The Witcher 2! No question. And that’s coming from someone who loves the Fable series for what it is. If you can run TW2 you should get it, hell you should probably pre-order it if you have any intention of upgrading in the next few months even (what I did) because some places offer the fancy premium version for the same low price as the standard pre-ordered.

  10. Lewie Procter says:

The third one didn’t require me to put in a date of birth, so it is a win from me.

  11. McDan says:

    1: Alright, slightly entertaining.
2: drama! Severed heads! Breasts! Dragon thing!
3: Sadness, more dramatic looking at things, slooooooow motion, and a child? I thinkI saw what looked like a magical owl as well. And more breasts.
4: Breasts, man hugs, sloooow motion lighting punch, freaky tentacle thing, he’s about to be hung? Magic fire hand. Looking good I must say.

    • Teddy Leach says:

Breasts and freaky tentacles? The… Horror.

    • crainey92 says:

      ^ LOL

    • adonf says:

      1- SD, crappy in fullscreen
2- tiny 20 by 10 pixel window, no full screen
      3 – no full screen
4 – opened a new page against my will, then crashed my browser

Did they have to release these videos to the sites with the most horrible players ?

    • Zanchito says:

adonf: Yes, it’s done thusly to test your resolve and devotion to The Witcher and his witchiness.

    • Peggle20 says:

      Breast jiggling rendered with PhysX.

  12. Njordsk says:

No steam pre load, makes me sad.

But nevermind, got Brink to play.

    • Shubb9 says:

GOG let me pre-load last week, just awaiting the last 150 odd mbs to unlock/un-encrypt and I’m good to go!

  13. godgoo says:

a certain retailer delivered my copy on saturday morning, unfortunately the cd key appears to be locked down until tomorrow so no early play for me, the fact that I have the game installed, a guide, map etc is just making me EVEN MORE hyped for this game.
Roll on tomorrow/ good bye sleep.

  14. mmrik says:

I recieved my preorder in the mail on Friday. Excited, I quit work early only to realize that their bloody online activation prevents me from starting the game until tonight.

    Bastards. That’s just evil.

    • godgoo says:

I wouldn’t wait up for 00:00 hoping to get started; according to the countdown clock on the official website it unlocks about 8am tomorrow.

      edit: link to

      70,000 seconds is 19.4 hours

    • mmrik says:

      That’s for the digital downloads.

According to their FAQ the Premium Edition unlocks 00:01 UTC

Not that it matters though, I need to work tomorrow and can’t stay up all night :P

    • godgoo says:

I too have to work tomorrow, but will probably stay up till 1am because that’s the way my mind works.

I only work in a school, it’s not like the future’s in my ha…

      …oh wait.

  15. Paxmayne says:

I hope there’s some way to enter your choices from the previous game without importing your save, I foolishly formatted my HDD and lost all of my Witcher saves…

    • CaLe says:

      link to

A selection of saves that people have uploaded.

    • Zenicetus says:

CaLe, thanks for that link. I got a new computer before the news came out that Witcher 2 would import saves, so I hadn’t transferred my endgame save from the old box.

According to one post from that link above (don’t know if it’s confirmed), if you don’t have a save, the game starts you as if you had followed the Neutral path and the Triss romance. That’s basically what I did anyway, so I might just go with the default start. I might lose out on a few orens in my pocket, maybe some collected gear, but with a game like this I don’t mind starting out with nothing and working my way up.

  16. SilverSilence says:

    Convenient YT links

    Disdain & Fear: link to
    Love & Blood: link to
    Hope: link to
How to Kill a Witcher: link to

    • billyblaze says:

You’re doing the lord’s work, son.

    • adonf says:

Thank you ! Too late for me unfortunately but the original post needs to be edited.

    • Thoric says:

I’ve had the first three in a playlist for the last few days.

Great work on all of them, though Disdain & Fear is my favorite. The scene with the assassin doing a kip up (1:57) fits in strangely well.

  17. Deano2099 says:

Will we be getting a Verdict/WIT? And if so when?

    • Lacessit says:

Seconded! I’m curious to see what the Hivemind make of it before spending hard -earned cash.

  18. HexagonalBolts says:

Has anyone seen a review of this? I want to preorder it but would at least like to see someone who has played it say ‘this is a good game’

    • Dionysus says:

      link to

I’m sure this is useful and the majority can understand French.

    • SilverSilence says:

There has been a few non-english reviews and they have all been 90+/100 :)

    • Kaira- says:

The Finnish magazine Pelit gave it 93/100 and also “Pelit recommends”, so I guess it’ll be rather good.

    • subedii says:

NeoGaf link with four International reviews summed up.
      link to

      CD-Action – 9.5/10
      PC-Action – Very Good
      Pelite Magazine – 93%
      JeuxVideo Magazine – 19/20

That said I tend to distrust early reviews. They tend to be overhyped and rushed through, or simply based off of a different build of the game than the final.

In other news, the comments system has literally eaten SIX attempts at posting.

    • Delusibeta says:

Also, apparently there’s a day minus one patch: link to

    • HexagonalBolts says:

Haha, well, if ‘Pelit recommends’, to GOG it is then!

    • cjlr says:

Eurofrench is weird. At least they like it!

  19. Sheng-ji says:

If anyones trying to get the frame near the end that flickers up, it reads:

Hi, a few words directly from the Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings development team.
We’ve been working on the Witcher 2 for 4 bloody long years now, and we’ve put our hearts and souls into it. We really think it was worth it. But of course you will pass the final judgement.

BTW: Did you know about the three different launch trailers? The one you just watched is called ‘Disdain & Fear’, and if you look on the net you can find two more: ‘Love and Blood’ and ‘Hope’. Happy hunting! And enjoy watching!
By the way, can you guess who the famous composer is from one of the trailers?
…and one more thing, we kindly ask you, please don’t pirate the game. We really want to bring some more goodness in future!

Wish you the best gaming experience and thanksfor watching and for your support!

    The Witcher 2 Dev Team
    CD Projeckt RED

PS1. You are welcome on our brand new website. And there you will find one additional brand new movie, called World of Witcher 2.

PS2. On Tuesday we are releasing our first DLC. Free. Because from CD Projeckt RED you can expect: DLC 4 FREE!:)

PS3. will also happen some day;) ..don’t forget that you can order our game from our beloved, beautiful sister company at link to

  20. noom says:

Hmph. This release has snuck up on me somewhat. Currently playing through ME2, after which I will be returning to the first Witcher, which I think I’m more than halfway through. Then I will be buying this…

  21. StingingVelvet says:

I wish I could buy this on GOG to support the devs.

    Need that box though.

    • Sheng-ji says:

Thats the only service that I think GOG could offer to really seal their position as the best games company in the world (In my very humble opinion) is to have an option to buy the boxed version and offer a download along with it!

    • StingingVelvet says:

They should offer to do it for like $10.

I think I will go suggest that on their forums.

  22. Darkelp says:

The Witcher 2 will be bett…oh

I haven’t pre-ordered this and will possibly wait till a sale. Its not that it doesn’t look good, it looks amazing, I just don’t feel the want to purchase it on day one.

But I am sure a WIT will have me reaching for my wallet.

    • Dominic White says:

Eh, it was £27 for me, and came with a pair of extra old DOS RPGs. Can’t really complain about that price.

    • Darkelp says:

The main issue is I have a lot of games I want to complete, and buying the Men Of War collection hasn’t helped at all.

Where did you order yours from?

    • Delusibeta says:

I’d guess GOG, since the pre-order offer includes a choice of one of five RPGs, one of which is a multipack. That deal expires at launch, however.

  23. aeromorte says:

I wonder if there will be any mods toolset … i think iv heard somethink about it but meh dunno i was drunk that day. Anyway what im curious about is … if i should play on eng version or on pl version when the time comes.

  24. MonkeyMonster says:

3 and 4 both fun/good but the music of 3 tips the scales…

    • m4x1u says:

      Music by F. Chopin :]

    • Zyrusticae says:

Was waiting for someone to say this.

There’s just no way any of the other trailers can compete when the Hope trailer channels Frederik Chopin.

  25. papabear says:

Do you guys think that I’ll miss too much without playing the first Witcher and diving directly into Assassins of the Kings?

    • Cinek says:

That’s the way it’s gonna be for me. :) I never went past 1st ch. of 1st Witcher so I don’t know much of it’s story. But never the less they explained everything nicely – both on the websites and in the game.

  26. noom says:

The Witcher 3 will be better.

  27. 9of9 says:

You guys have it all wrong.

There’s actually five launch trailers. You missed one the Witcher site itself, the World of the Witcher: link to (yes, they host it on dailymotion… no, I don’t know why).

  28. Talorc says:

Awesome as, that many trailers is definitely allowed. My order from the UK (to Australia) cant arrive fast enough

  29. Angryinternetman says:

    Looking pretty effen good, but it wont sell, because theres no justice in this world ;___;

    • subedii says:

Kind of like how the first game didn’t sell or… ?

    • gganate says:

The first game sold 1.5 million copies and there’s a lot more hype around this one.

    • subedii says:

Which is kind of my point.

The devs have said even the pre-orders have currently gone over their expectations (and bear in mind, purchases from net them much higher profits), and that they’re close to running out of special editions in some regions before launch.

      link to

    • Peggle20 says:

I’d sooner say that it won’t sell because it’s a botched abortion of a console brawler with a plot written by 11 year olds. Then again, the world’s full of juvenile mary sue fantasy that sells just fine without being in the least original or intelligent.

    • Sheng-ji says:

Er… the witchers written by Andrzej Sapkowski, one of the most respected fantasy writers in the world… if it’s unorigional, it’s because people copied him!

    • Angryinternetman says:

      This makes me happy.

    • boskee says:

I think you may be wrong as it is currently the best selling title on Steam + the best selling PC game on Amazon UK, Italy and Germany. It’s also 2nd on Amazon US and 3rd on Amazon France.

  30. Nallen says:

I got The Witcher in the $4.99 deal from GOG. Every time I start playing it’s suddenly 4 hours later. How long is the game? Will I finish it before pay day on the 19th?

    • gganate says:

Not likely. I”m at 36 hours and I’m in Chapter 4. There’s still Chapter 5 and the Epilogue. But really, why rush through a game just to play the sequel? I’m having fun with the Witcher. It’s not a race.

    • gutenbergn says:

The Witcher is a pretty big game (took me about 45hs to complete). It’s well worth playing it to completion, brilliant game.

    • iniudan says:

Will say no, if you really played at the rhythm of 4 hours a day since release of the first one on GOG.

    • Squirrelfanatic says:

@Nallen: Me too! :D I am in Act II right now and pour every minute of my gaming time into this. As soon as I have finished this (and my new hardware has arrived…) I will continue right away. But I won’t rush. I swear…

  31. Squirrelfanatic says:

The third Trailer seems to be full of spoilers. Not just the kind of stuff where characters and places are revealed, but also which characters appear where and what stuff they do. Watch with care I say.

Edit: Make that the third and fourth.

  32. Anaraavi says:

I replayed it last week, as I had lost my old saves. Took me 43 hours and did not do all side quests, including the armour collection. I believe the armour carries over to the new game should you indeed do that collection quest.

  33. Unrein says:

Why is Geralt using Barack Obama as an arrow shield?

  34. Peggle20 says:

“In this funny sex game, you’ll get it on with hot chicks, beat up dudes, and do crazy drugs. ”

the witcher a spiritual successor to Bonetown? Clearly.

    • Sheng-ji says:

If it wasn’t for the fact you are doing this over the internet, you would be likely borderline section-able. But because you can hide behind a false name and don’t have to look anyone in the eyes while your doing it, it’s some how acceptable behavior.

There is no difference in how you are acting and the man who stands outside the exhibition of Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” telling everyone who wants to experience the painting that “Still life: Vase with twelve Sunflowers” was rubbish, it didn’t even look nice, so this paintings going to be bad too.

We are here, for the most part because we enjoyed the last game and this game looks like something we would enjoy too.

GO AWAY, let us enjoy it, peddle your soulless nonsense elsewhere. I respect your right to not be interested in the game, but respect my right to be interested, rather than passive-aggressively bad mouthing it.

Though I suspect that you get your kicks from annoying people, and for that I pity you. As a human being, you and all trolls like you are broken emotionally, a symptom of loneliness and free access to the internet.

    • gulag says:

      Obvious troll is boring.

    • Acorino says:

“Don’t feed the troll!” – Old internet wisdom

    • JackShandy says:

Well, I thought that was quite funny. “Borderline sectionable”? I have to wonder if this comment was edited before I got here.

  35. Furius says:

90 comments in and no one has nocited that star wars duel of the fates has been not-to subtly ripped off in that last one? Here’s hoping for trade disputes, borderline-racist aliens and a general ruining of the franchise right guys?

    • cjlr says:

Duel of the Fates was itself largely taken from a number of modern and classical compositions (as with much John Williams).

      Particularly this.

    • Furius says:

God you’re right. So it’s official; nothing good came out of the prequels at all. That’s depressing. If only there was a highly anticipated release tommorrow to cheer me up!

  36. frenz0rz says:

GOOD GOD, this comes out tomorrow?!

I had no idea Witcher 2 was arriving this soon. Curse the distraction of final year exams, curse them to hell! I’ll have to run off and get this as soon as possible, before anyone decides to accidentally spoil the plot for me.

  37. Ertard says:

Fairly good price (£28) here: link to

Been waiting for this game for quite a long time. Didn’t start the first one until Enhanced Edition came out (since the game was completely broken at release in many ways), but that is probably in my top 3 best games of all time. Will never forget how some choices played out, and how they felt as though I got exactly the reaction I expected, but then someone that I didn’t take in the equation changed the outcome in an eerily smart way.

    • NeoShai says:

26.99 on GOG and you get no DRM and a host of other bonuses and a free game.

  38. Bhazor says:

That day -1 patch is pretty common. Reviewers generally get the last non gold version (like a week before the final final game) and these often come with a warning list of known bugs.

  39. Zanchito says:

Holy crap, this one’s DAMN GOOD!!

    Disdain & Fear: link to

    Thanks for the links!

  40. Davie says:

Nice! I’m reasonably excited about all this.

And as a folk-metal geek, I must know what that song is in the second trailer. So awesome.

    • Lukasz says:

      Hedningarna – Vargtimmen

    • Arglebargle says:

Hedningarna rocks hard! They were my gateway drug to the wonders of Scandihoovian musics of the last 20 years. Do check them out. Lots of mondo cool stuff.

    • Davie says:

Thanks! That gives me something to listen to alongside Korpiklaani.

  41. Sidorovich says:

Has anyone else ordered this from Zavvi? Got an email from them today containing my DLC code but message was accidently flagged as spam, and I can’t open it! Do you think Zavvi will also put said code on an inlay card inside the gamebox?

    • Sheng-ji says:

I can’t answer your question about zavvi, but surely you can unflag that message. What email client do you use?

    • Sidorovich says:

yahoo email – tried moving msg to inbox, wont move. Have added Zavvi’s email circulars to address book & set other Zavvi msgs to non-spam. But client wont retrieve the DLC email. Informed Yahoo of this, said they’d fixed it, but still no joy. Hope Zavvi respond to my email asking them to re-send original or I might be screwed :(

  42. Betamax says:

RE: Video #1. The drunk conversations with his friends were one of the best bits of the first game, glad to see they make a return. :P

Edit: Also vid #2 is bloody fantastic.

  43. moyogo says:

    Best to worst: 1, 4, 2, 3.

  44. QuantaCat says:

I have an inactive blog I wanted to start writing on the differences between biowares titles and The Witcher, and basically complain about teh biowarez. Maybe I will finally do so after Ive played The Witcher 2, and I have had some time to do my other thousand things..

  45. Pirate says:

Anyone waiting anxiously for Witcher 2 ? I actually hold it in my hands right now :) Pre-order mixup FTW !

  46. Jimbo says:

    Gamespot wins this round.

  47. Wizlah says:

Looking forward to receiving collectors edition tomorrow, then packing it away for a later date. The family is likely to be away for a week whilst I split my time between a massive list of DIY on the gaff and playing witcher 1 to completion, maybe even starting number two.
Dunno, though, I have a save file that is about 3 years old (no word of a lie) from the first game, predating the arrival of our first kid. Part of me wants to complete that one, the other part wants to go from the start using the polish language pack with subtitles.
Just for a laugh, I loaded it all up onto my laptop (my gaming pc is in bad need of a spring clean, and anyway, I can only hook it up to my TV at home, as we currently don’t have the space). On medium settings, it almost runs, so I wonder if I wack it down to low and get it patched up if it will run okay. Then I could vaguely consider playing from the beginning again.
Can’t patch right now. They’ve temporarily suspended all accounts for the next couple of days, presumably whilst they get through all the pre-downloading nonsense. I guess I could register again, but it seems so … wasteful.
