Duel Wielding: Magicka PvP From June 21st

Robe ’em up wizard-action game Magicka will soon allow more than just co-op combat and duels, you’ll soon be able to blast each other in PvP arenas under a number of game rules. To prove that this TRUTH Paradox have released footage and I’ve posted it below, along with the details of the three PvP modes.

Classic Deathmatch:
Instead of accidentally zapping your companions, you kill them on purpose! It’s every wizard for himself as up to four physically inept beings duke it out in a one mage takes all battle.

Brawl mode:
In Brawl, each player/team only has a set number of lives, and the last ma…wizard standing wins. Just make sure your “friends” don’t squander those precious lives.

Kreitor mode:
A fiendish new mode named after a clever Magicka fan who modded the game, the round based Kreitor mode unlocks Magicks at special intervals during the match, forcing players to come up with new strategies as new spells become available.

Awesome news! About the only thing that was sure to tempt me back to the game. Looking forward to trying it.

  2. DuckSauce says:

Awesome, I made a duel video with a friend shortly after release, it was fun, sad to see they don’t have duel, but deathmatch is very good too :D looking forward to this update.

  3. Diziet Sma says:

That’s one heck of a nod to Terry Pratchett in there. Did I miss that in the single player game or have I just forgotten it?

  4. Malawi Frontier Guard says:

    Will this be DLC again?

Edit: Okay, a map pack at release will be DLC.

    • gorgol says:

Yup, isn’t every update these days? However it will be free DLC IIRC

    • Vinraith says:

In some ways, there’s a lot to be said for compartmentalizing PvP. A sizable portion of any game’s population never uses those modes, after all.

    • Malawi Frontier Guard says:

You can’t fool me with your word games.

    • gorgol says:

Malawi, hmm, I think I’ve misunderstood something, ‘cos now I’m confused.

    • Gnoupi says:

According to Shacknews and Kotaku, it will indeed be a free update.

    • Malawi Frontier Guard says:

You see, from the perspective of Steam there is no such thing as free downloadable content, only free downloaded content. There is no choice.

  5. Fumarole says:

    Magicka is already PvP.

    • cowthief skank says:

Exactly what I thought when I read the headline.

Lost count of the number of times my friend or I “accidentally” cast thunderbolt when there are no enemies on the screen, or perhaps melt a frozen river after crossing it…

    • gorgol says:

      “friend” *

    • Tom OBedlam says:

      Hah I thought the same

  6. nemryn says:

    Okay, let’s see….

Nope, still can’t run the demo. Curse you, Paradox, and your lack of support for integrated graphics!

    • Doomtrout says:

It runs, but not very smoothly, does anyone know if the demo has been patched along with the full game? I couldn’t find any options to fiddle with the graphics in there either. This game looks so fun, not being able to play it saddens me greatly.

  7. gorgol says:

    ugh reply fail

  8. Daiv says:

Magicka isn’t PvP? I always considered the NPCs to be more “collateral damage” than “enemies”.

  9. Gnoupi says:

I see great things in this trailer!

    – Fireballs (and probably others) can be pushed back just like a pyro to a soldier!
    – There are BIG projectiles, which are crushing rocks, and going through (instead of just destroying one thing, and stopping there)
    – Some weird “red circles” around the head, it looks like a mind control (fear, maybe?)

The new maps seems nice, like the frozen lake, sure to be fun. The desert looks gorgeous (would be great with a sandworm)

  10. Drake Sigar says:

You will all cower beneath the might of Edwin Odesseiron!

  11. povu says:

    No more QFQFSAA?
