DeathSpank With A Side Of: The Baconing

Hothead Games, sans Ron Gilbert, have released the first visual details of their next game, The Baconing. Which is of course a DeathSpank game. But oddly one that absolutely does not mention DeathSpank in the title. Here DeathSpank tries on all his underwear at once, which as we all know summons an evil version of yourself, in his case the AntiSpank. And they say that gaming is immature. There’s pics and a trailer below.

“Balance can only be restored to the world by entering the Fires of Bacon and destroying five of the thongs. Now, DeathSpank travels the lands to find a sizzling solution to vanquish the AntiSpank and bring about peace once again to Spanktopia.”

But how it relates to DeathSpank, the original game, and why it’s not being marketed as a sequel, is unclear at the moment. So you can join in the confusion with the completely unhelpful teaser trailer below, and a few screenshots (clickening for biggening) that actually show a glimpse of the game.

  1. Tretiak says:

    Why sans Ron Gilbert?

    • henben says:

He resigned before the first game was even released, I think. It wasn’t entirely clear why, but reading in between the lines, it seemed like “creative differences”.
I wonder if they’re not mentioning Deathspank in the title due to some kind of rights issue, since Gilbert invented the character.

    • Tretiak says:

I thought Deathspank was going to be a cool game, a new Monkey Island (but different genre). It is another “Diablo clone”.

    • vodka and cookies says:

At least it’s a mildly humorous Diablo clone. I’m actually surprised how fast Hothead are putting these games out.

Hothead also had creative differences with the Penny Arcade guys as well, different work ethics maybe who knows. Ron Gilbert is at Double Fine now I think so hopefully that works out.

    • TillEulenspiegel says:

It’s a Diablo clone with a protagonist who is a somewhat less funny version of The Tick. Good concept and a fun little game.

    • Ignorant Texan says:

Ron Gilbert has tweeted that he receives no royalties from DeathSpank, so I would doubt he owns any of the rights(he was probably under an infamous ‘work-for-hire’ contract).

  2. Guiscard says:

So Deathspank choses fancy moonbase over valiant sacrifice if the first image with Sandy’s head in a jar is anything to go by.

  3. Gnoupi says:

Anyway, if it releases like the previous one, I will probably never see it. ( link to )
