Aeroplane Over The Sea: SkyDrift

You may remember that Quinns fellow told us about SkyDrift all the way back in May. It’s the one with the planes. Developer Digital Reality thought it was time to let us all check in on the development, by way of a series of video diaries. Here’s parts one and two:

Those backgrounds are quite lush aren’t they? I can’t see any one thing that’s particularly original about SkyDrift, but it’s got a nice level of visual spit and polish, and brightly coloured racing spliced with power-ups is a classic formula. Could be fun.

What do we think? Are you all up for a bit of Mario Kart with planes? Burnout in the sky? Crimson Skies with arrows floating at either side of you telling you where to go?

SkyDrift is coming to consoles next week, but no date is set for the PC release yet.

  1. McDan says:

Burnout in the sky sounds excellent. I miss burnout revenge. And I’m pretty sure that “quinns” is just a word you made up, there’s no one called that.

  2. fishmitten says:

    Great album :)

    • BatmanBaggins says:

I always knew RPS writers were pretentious hipsters

    • Balobam says:

I don’t think knowing it exists can be either, but liking it sure can. I tried listening to it once, do not understand what people hear in it.

    • Doth Messar says:

      Holland 1945. Great album indeed.

    • Lipwig says:

i like the title track but i’ve never really bothered with much else in it

    • godgoo says:

I love this album and if that makes me a pretentious hipster then so is my 65 year old dad who introduced me to it.

    • TheTourist314 says:

I went to college at where Jeff Mangum’s from. /hipstercred

    • Lightningproof says:

I like NMH’s music but I don’t really listen to it since they went mainstream.

      EDIT: OhGodthat’sajokepleasedon’thurtme.

    • Adventurous Putty says:

Oh my God yes, what an album. Probably one of the best indie albums out there, although I’m sure someone will come along and say it’s “overrated” or “pretentious” or some other meaningless truism.

    • TheGameSquid says:

It’s obviously a great album, but personally I think it’s nowhere even close to On Avery Island.

  3. Bhazor says:

    And…. cue Bethesda lawyers.

    • phosgene says:

      Well played, sir.

    • Balobam says:

“Unfortunately, the term Sky has become synonymous with the Elder Scrolls series, so if you do not change your game title to AtmosphereSkidding we will sue you for everything”

    • Unaco says:

And… Cue failure to understand the Bethesda/Mojang case.

    • Bhazor says:

Actually I have to admit until a second ago I thought the next Elder Parchment game was called “Skyrift”. I don’t know what else to say.

    • Urthman says:

What? Digital Reality tried to trademark the word “Sky” for video games? That’s as dumb as Notch trying to trademark the word “Scrolls.”

Oh wait. Digital Reality aren’t actually idiots and Bhazor doesn’t understand the thing he’s trying to make a joke about.

    • LionsPhil says:

Silly Internet people, Notch is automatically in the right because he’s a successful millionaire indie developer and can do no wrong! Bethsda are a big mean old company with people working for money, grr.

    • Zelius says:

Urthman hits the nail on the head.

  4. coldvvvave says:

Blue pointers kinda ruined that screenshot for me.

  5. Merkoth says:

This looks freaking ace to me. I’ll keep a very close eye on this one :)

  6. pkt-zer0 says:

So this is what the Imperium Galactica guys are working on these days. Umm… interesting, I guess.

  7. NieArch says:

Modern version of Plane Crazy. I like this a lot so far.

  8. kuran says:

Remember Gee Bee Air Rally for Amiga?

  9. Rii says:

“Are you all up for a bit of Mario Kart with planes?”

    Mario Kart 7 has planes.

    • Lewie Procter says:

I thought it just had Hang gliding?

    • Rii says:

Incidentally this game does look pretty slick.

    • Bhazor says:

Diddy Kong racing had planes AND hovercraft 14 years ago. I now feel so old.

    • Rii says:

Yeah DKR was awesome, great ‘adventure’ mode too. But it was too damn hard and its weapons lacked the punch of MK64’s. Of course as it turned out the later Mario Kart games would share the same flaw…

    • Urthman says:

Yeah, my first thought was Diddy Kong Racing HD!

  10. aldo_14 says:

Could this be the spiritual successor to Slipstream 5000 I’ve not been waiting for but might still be interested in?

    • Sweetz says:

Thought the same thing. Great to see there’s another person out there that actually played that game ;)

    • LionsPhil says:

That game had some real pretty artwork.

  11. jon_hill987 says:

Looks like Excite Truck. But with planes.

  12. Skystrider says:

Reminds of Plane Crazy. With modern and rather gorgeous graphics. Looks fun.

  13. shoptroll says:

If there’s local splitscreen play this has “date night” with the girlfriend and my HDTV written all over it.

    • Quine says:

I humbly submit you may be doing ‘date night’ wrong.*

      Or co-op.

      *Unless you really like planes…

    • Balobam says:

Allow me to recommend a nice game of Mario Party for you and the lucky lady.

Yesiree, the ultimate in ‘getting people to like you’ technology.

  14. LMAOMOBILE says:

and mom would stick a fork right into daddy’s shoulderrrrr
and dad would throw the garbage all across the floorrrrrrr

  15. Shadowcat says:

Surprisingly, it turns out that “SkyDrift is a eunuch racing game”.

  16. Crius says:

Remember me the concept of Slipstream5000
