ReBooty: Monkey Island FPS Revealed

Still better than the third game, amirite?

‘Tis the season for it, apparently. Next from the roster of beloved PC games from the 90s to get a suitably modern first-person shooter remake is classic point and click adventure The Secret Of Monkey Island – now reimagined as an action title. “Time has moved on,” said LucasGames chief modernisation officer Ian Koticiello. “We’re big fans of the original Monkey Island(TM), we’re definitely paying as much homage to it as we can – bringing across the essence of the world, the core essence of what it is to be an inept wannabe pirate with a glock safe action pistol.”

M.O.N.K.E.Y., due in Q3 2012, “takes that viewpoint from the original game and zooms into Jack Threepwood’s head.” Featuring visceral pirate- and zombie-shooting action, a recharging Grog system and a extensive multiplayer mode which faithfully homages the original game by enabling gamers to take direct control over six beloved Monkey Island(TM) series characters in brutal deathmatch arenas, M.O.N.K.E.Y. brings this dark and gritty saga of high seas combat and undead horror to a whole new audience. You can see the first footage below.

Oh dear, you lot aren’t going to be very happy about this, are you? More details here.

(Thanks to Joe Martin for the tip).

Edit: Apparently that’s just the console version. The PC version is going to look much better:

  1. Seboss says:

April 1st is a long time from now.

    • Kill_The_Drive says:

      Stop reading my mind.

    • Jhoosier says:

I’m surprised the video was actually game-related. I was expecting a rickroll, or whatever the 2011 variant may be.

    • Davee says:

      That was my line!

    • Alexander Norris says:

If you don’t enjoy humour, could I suggest not reading RPS?

I mean, it’s not like this happens once a year, you know.

    • Seboss says:

Too soon guys, too soon. I haven’t recovered from that Syndicate FPS thing yet.

    • VelvetFistIronGlove says:

Let me join the mêlée and leave a snarky comment.

    • mollemannen says:

yes its a shame syndicate weren’t a third person gta style game rather. but m.o.n.k.e.y. i really want to play just to shoot all the annoying people that inhabits it’s world.

    • Casimir Effect says:

      My 2011 rickroll:

    • juwiley says:

Alright! We took a fun game for kids with 30 verbs and turned it into a boring game for 35 year olds with 2 verbs (open door, shoot stuff). Congrats to the dev team on a nice job reconstructing the environment, but think the FPS element is dumb and unnecessary

    • VelvetFistIronGlove says:

Looks like my attempt at a traditional RPS pun thread didn’t even pass the first trial. Disappointed.

  2. Brumisator says:

    a HL1 mod? neat!

  3. Magnetude says:

“That’s the second biggest killstreak I’ve ever seen!”

  4. Zak T Duck says:

Down with that sort of thing!

    • DigitalSignalX says:

CUE THE RAGING INTERNET FANBOIS. Finally though, a reboot of an IP I’ve actually played. And I’m completely fine with it as long as they find some way of retaining that same brilliant brand of humor. And if it were real :(

    • Zak T Duck says:

The correct response was “Careful now”.

    • Nick says:

I heard he gets his lad out.

    • gummybearsliveonthemoon says:

That… would be an ecumenical matter!

  5. kawacatoose says:

    I am lost for words.

  6. Jimbo says:

It’s a shame this isn’t a real story; a first person pirate game could be awesome.

  7. faelnor says:

Predicting idiots still living in the past complaining about how this doesn’t have the spirit of the original games in 3… 2… 1…

HEY HERE’S A FREE HINT, WE’RE NOT LIVING IN THE 90’S ANYMORE, PEOPLE HAVE MOVED ON, WAKE UP GUYS, I for one am glad that first person sequels of great games are coming out.

    • Eclipse says:

Atm I can see only one idiot here :-/

    • Hanban says:

Are you standing in front of a mirror?

      *ba-dum tish*

Just kidding. Who cares about this sort of thing!

    • Dakia says:

Let’s see IW release the next CoD as an RTS and skip the annual FPS release. I wonder how well that change would go over.

    • Hanban says:

Honestly, I don’t think anyone would care. They’d be too busy shouting obscenities to each other in COD: Black Ops.

    • Phasma Felis says:

      I can’t tell who’s trolling who.

    • Rhygadon says:

      @Phasma Felis:

Indeed. It’s a bit like that video with the two chatbots, isn’t it?

    • Highstorm says:

  8. Delixe says:

Damn that Koticiello is there nothing he will not defile?

  9. ShonRichards says:

I am vastly disappointed in the decision to only let players carry two insults at a time.

    • ReV_VAdAUL says:

You need to realise this a more accurate and naturalistic depiction of insult sword fighting and something the majority of consumers want.

    • Eddy9000 says:

I’m pleased the insults have been updated to make them gritty and realistic. “how appropriate asshole, you fight like a fucking cow” has an edgy quality missing from the original.

    • Zarunil says:

@ShonRichards: You have to remember that this was how they originally intended it in Monkey Island 1, but due to the hardware limitations of the time they were forced to add more insults.

    • Aninhumer says:

I heard if you screw up your insult replies you can just go and hide behind a rock until you get your composure back. Stupid console gamers dumbing everything down.

    • Abundant_Suede says:

I for one am glad technology has finally evolved to the point where we need never play a non-shooter again. No one has ever really wanted to play a game that was not a first/third person shooter. We were simply limited by our primitive technology.

    • mejoff says:

      Hide in a bar, surely?

    • Wang Tang says:

Yes, the limit sucks, but I heard you can now upgrade your insults!

Supposedly you can buy additional swear words and insult-nouns in the House of Mojo ingame store, to make your insults stronger.

  10. CMaster says:

All you whiners need to move with the times.

  11. Tusque D'Ivoire says:

Hmm, somehow i can’t seem to play these olde-type of FPSes anymore, where there isn’t even a decent cover system. Doesn’t really go with the times, gaming has moved on.

I’ll take awesome cover-based insult battles over this anytime.

  12. skinlo says:

    lol jk?

    • Megadyptes says:

No, deadly serious. How dare you accuse the fine fellows at Rock, Paper, Shotgun of joking around with their loyal fanbase. The nerve of it!

  13. magnus says:

Why isn’t there a Chucklevision FPSRPG hybrid? O.K. I’d probably be the only person who’d buy it and anyway that only to support the developers, but still.

    • Magnetude says:

“Chain your To-Me-To-You’s together for a damage bonus”

I’ve had an idea for a bunch of fake loading screens with helper text, I know what I’m doing when I get home!

    • Lambchops says:

A prime opportunity for a dice based mini game as well.

  14. oceanclub says:

“The game still features those old-style adventure games puzzles that people love, but updated for a modern console era. Now, “puzzles” are actually crates with the word “PUZZLE” emblazoned on the side, and puzzles are “solved” by shooting them.”

  15. Jad says:

Bah. FPSes are for old people and nerds. If it’s not a one-button iPhone game or a friend-exploiting farming simulation, I’m not interested.

    • bwion says:

You may well laugh, but I assume we’re like three years at most from a Farmville FPS.

  16. Matt says:

Recharging Grog is a blight on the modern shooter! If there was ever a game that cried out for lines of grog laid out for you to run over when approaching dangerous levels of sobriety, it is this!!!

How can they claim to be faithful if they can’t even get this right!!!!

  17. HexagonalBolts says:

I think technically it’s actually an RTT game.

  18. TotalBiscuit says:

I can’t help shake the feeling that you’re a wee bit miffed Alec

  19. Hexidecimal says:

This is like a joke right? This isn’t a real game coming out. I can’t think of an IP less suited to an FPS, except maybe Civ. This is going to be decidedly awful.

    • Abundant_Suede says:

Civ 6 FPS reboot due next fall. It’s only on facebook, though. Free to play, microtransaction supported via the purchase of historic headwear. Gandhi looks badass in a shako, and it increases his rate of fire by 5%.

    • wu wei says:

      You had me at headwear.

  20. faelnor says:

Still I’d pay for the CryEngine mod in that old vid if it was a full-fledged first-person adventure on Melee island. I think it’s in my YT favourites.

  21. Lobotomist says:

I hope it features split screen co-op mode.

  22. Derppy says:

    Looks horrible.

I could tolerate a first person monkey island game if it looked like this: link to

  23. Breedlove says:

I would pay top dollar for a Elder’s Scroll/Fallout take on the first two Monkey Island games. Top dollar.

  24. Uglycat says:

Those MI beeps and boops will always hold a place dear in my heart.

  25. David Lundin says:

Never mind the first person part, how about the fact that the main character is named JACK Threepwood!?

    I’m sure it’s a typo, but I can’t believe noone picked up on it…

    • Zorganist says:

That’s no typo, LucasArts has found that the modern consumer is much more open to pirates named Jack, and feel that the decision to re-name Threepwood will open up Monkey Island to a wealth of new audiences, without impacting greatly on the spirit of the original game.

    • Joe Deadman says:

@Zorganist Well they were right to do so! I mean Guybrush Threepwood? That’s the most ridiculous name I’ve ever heard!

  26. Moni says:

Seems like an appropriate place to drop the “Relevant TVTropes Article of the Week”: link to

    • Nick says:

not really, because tvtropes is tiresome.

    • Megadyptes says:

I never got the point in TVTropes, it’s just obvious shit pointed out and given stupid names and then a million anime references. Why do some people love it so much?

    • Thants says:

I think it’s that people enjoy analysis of the mechanics of storytelling. It’s not for everyone.

  27. PedroBraz says:

    This is a joke yes?

    • Teddy Leach says:

    • stahlwerk says:

I can’t see anyone else laughing in here!

    • Lambchops says:

Nope. They tried allowing jokes on RPS back in 1895 and it was an unmitigated disaster. Now each author is only allowed one joke a year and it must be prefaced with the words “A games journalist and [insert comapanion/s] walked into a bar” so it can be clearly identified as such.

    • Synesthesia says:

how can you not see that this is exactly what people want? Now tell me when and where i can preorder. Please let there be preordering bonuses.

  28. Seb says:

This is brilliant. (I know it sounds wanky but it’s true.)

  29. Eclipse says:

Ok let’s organize a deathmatch on melee island, who’s with me? we need someone hosting a server with that hl1 map

  30. Kollega says:

Actually, i wouldn’t mind an FPS that tells a lot of jokes and lampoons the cliches and conventions of it’s own genre like Monkey Island did. I know there was that Matt Hazard game, but i never picked it up and wouldn’t know if it does the job correctly.

  31. Daiv says:

    At last!

Adventure games just aren’t “contemporary” these days.

  32. Xercies says:

Actually that Crysis one does look amazing! To be honest I don’t care about the shooting or whatever i would just like to explore Monkey Islands locations in first person because actually it looked quite cool.

  33. juandemarco says:

So, how long does it take to make such maps? I mean, there are some serious hours behind all that work, both the 1st and the 2nd one…

  34. jellydonut says:

Christ almighty this is hilarious timing.

    • Ergates_Antius says:

Yes, very clever of them to know that in exactly 7 years and 1 month from their last update, someone would announce an FPS remake of Syndicate.

      (HINT: It’s from 2004)

  35. ninjapirate says:

“Time has moved on” was the first thing that came to my mind when I read the title.
So there *is* hope for a Maniac Mansion FPS after all!

  36. Batolemaeus says:

You missed the opportunity to do a “grog safe action pistol”-pun.

    Rps, I am disappoint.

  37. Enso says:

This better have support for CD-i trackball. I’m sick of PC fanboys saying how great the mouse and keyboard are. Get with the times! The trackball is so much more comfortable and all the buttons are easily reached.

    • ucfalumknight says:

Pfft, Track Ball-schmack-ball, I want pad and stylus support!

    • Vampy says:

You guys need to move with the times! A new genre for a new take on an old game requires a new.. err old… newer…

  38. Arithon says:

I think I’m gonna LeChuck up!

  39. ucfalumknight says:

And it is cutting edge stories like this that makes RPS THE premiere site for PC Games. No other sites had the scoop on these rebooted Adventure/RTT/RTS/4x old tired IPs to the new console friendly FPS IPs. I for one salute you. PC Gamer, you dropped the ball on this one!

  40. 0ms says:

M.O.N.K.E.Y., the fpps (first pirate person shooter)

Sounds sufficiently Gilbertish to me. Well done, sirs

  41. stahlwerk says:

Next up I want them to re-imagine the indiana jones adventure games as 3rd person puzzle platformers, like tomb raider.

    Oh wait!

  42. Skeletor68 says:

    Ha, clever.

  43. Cinnamon says:

    Features visceral dog poisoning action.

  44. Okami says:

I’m sure the game is going to be a good pirate themed zombieshooter. But why did they have to use Monkey Island for that is beyond me. They could have just created their own IP…

  45. Loppsided says:

  46. Tei says:

This is a way to approach old point and click adventure games to new generation of gamers. Replacing the point and click interface by a aim and shot interface, and the adventure by a serie of unlocking challenges insane. But if is fun, I will play it.

  47. shoptroll says:

Old Man Murray would be proud :)

  48. hardband says:

This MUST be a joke! Who would make monkey island into an FPS and more importantly why! who… why….

EDIT: Yay for me not researching and being an idiot! HURAY!

    • ResonanceCascade says:

What next, you’re going to accuse Fart Cops of being a joke too? Take that baditude elsewhere!

  49. Abundant_Suede says:

    God, not another zombie game…

  50. ResonanceCascade says:

I’ve always wanted to shoot that damn ship salesman. DAY 1 PURCHASE.
