Hivemind Restored: Welcome Adam Smith

Every new person gets a session with Horace.

It was a long, interesting process. When RPS put out the appeal for a new writer to plug into the hivemind™, we were never expecting not only the incredible volume of applicants, but the extraordinarily high standards. Over 300 people applied for the position, and in there were many absolutely fantastic candidates. It was not an easy decision by any means, which is partly why it’s taken us so very long. But one writer stood out, in terms of the specialisms we were hoping for combined with just really great writing. He, you may have guessed, is Adam Smith.

We’re delighted to welcome Adam into the dysfunctional, broken family of RPS. Even though he’s Mancunian. Hopefully you’ve been enjoying his writing over the last few weeks, as he’s faced the trial-by-fire route which any must take to work with us. We certainly have. He’s a fine asset to our team. He even plays hardcore strategy games.

So we’re back to a core team of four again, aided by our wonderful freelancers. It’s as it should be, indeed as the Infinite Instruction Booklet of Horace instructs it must be.

A huge thanks goes out to Lewie P as well, without whom we’d have been in a right pickle over the last few weeks of being a threesome. You will continue to see him on the site lots too, we hope.

So, welcome the new-boy in.

    Congratulations, Adam!

    • Richard Beer says:

Indeed, many congratulations on beating such a large field, Adam, and welcome! I’m already enjoying your Sengoku diaries and Wealth of Nations was really impressive. I’m very much looking forward to your future contributions.

  2. magnus says:

It’s good to know cartoon bears can still find work.

  3. rustybroomhandle says:

Woot! Use big words, apply wit! Ra! :)

  4. Bull0 says:

Good luck catering to this gaggle of mentalists, Mr. Smith

  5. Jams O'Donnell says:

Yeah, like it’s not just Quinns with a different forename.

  6. Corrupt_Tiki says:

The force is strong in this one.

  7. Stense says:

Hello and welcome. Good to see that you survived the initiation test with Horace the endless bear. I look forward to your articles and stuff.

    • LionsPhil says:

A job interview with Horace must feel like it goes on forever.

  8. Joshua says:

I’ll be thinking of that economics guy whenever I read his name.

    • GenBanks says:

I had a history professor with the name too. I’m disappointed he’s not secretly a games journalist.

  9. Vexing Vision says:

So, who’s the sexy lady on the picture?

  10. Theoban says:

    Can we see his bottom?

Can’t wait for more Sengoku goodness. Glad to have you on board, Adam!

  15. Fede says:

Now you just need to update the bottom of the page :)
It will be sad to see Quintin go, as Kieron did, but we need Adam there.

And, congrats, Adam! Awesome to have someone playing the core Paradox games here :D

  20. dog says:

    welcome mr smith…

  21. eroticfishcake says:

According to Wikipedia he’s date of birth is 1723 which means this man has plenty of pedigree in videogame journalism. Well bloody done I say Mr. Smith.

  22. berjalan says:

Dammit! He looks handsome as well. Guess I’ll just go kill myself then. Well done though. :-)

    • Mollusc Infestation says:

You can’t see his gills or his webbed feet in that picture.

  23. Arvind says:

What a sha – oh wait, this is good news! Welcome Adam!
I hope you did ask for this

  24. Dawngreeter says:

I thought the primary requisite for the position of forth hivemind segment was to have a name which lends itself to nicnames. Like Quinns and Karen Gillan. What are we supposed to call this new guy, then? Adama? Smithy? A-Smoosh?

    • Thermal Ions says:

Well after looking at the page footer it could be:
      “The Twitless One”

    • Saldek says:

Emperor Shaddam? How about ‘Emperor Tim Shaddam’? Even more approachable and almost an anagram of Adam Smith.

  25. Stellar Duck says:

This pleases me greatly as I’ve been enjoying his words a lot. I was rather hoping it would be this result. Congratulations, Mr. Smith and keep that Senguko diary coming. Quickly now!

  26. Valvarexart says:

Welcome, brother! We shall set forth on glorious commentfield adventures together!

  27. Ondrej says:

    Hi Adam!

  28. Zeewolf says:

Hm, I’d hate to be rude, but why does he look like a sausage with a bear’s head attached? Are you sure he’s a real person, RPS? And who’s that guy next to him?

  29. Hoaxfish says:

So, does RPS hazing involve forcing them to play bad console-ports?

  30. Valvarexart says:

“We have been expecting you, Mr Smith..:”

  31. ix says:

    Welcome Adam!

Is it just me or does he look about 2ft long in that picture?

  32. JB says:

    Wait…”Even though he’s Mancunian.”

I’m sure we weren’t told this before he got plugged into the hivemind. Ah, as it’s you Adam, we’ll let it slide this once.

  33. JiminyJickers says:

    Huzza!! Good man.

  34. abigbat says:

    Welcome :)

    Hodge says:

    Welcome aboard Mr Smith!

I must confess that I originally thought Adam was a nom-de-plume and you were trialling a bunch of different writers under the name… I don’t think it was until the Sengoku diary that finally scrapped that theory.

So… er, yeah, nice to know you actually exist, Adam :).

  36. CMaster says:

“Every new person gets a session with Horace”

    A terrifying thought.

Anyway, welcome Adam. Has he done games journalism elsewhere before, or is this fresh blood?

  37. KingCathcart says:

As a Smith myself, I quite agree with this policy of only hiring Smiths in the post-Gillen era of RPS.

    Well done!

  38. Man Raised by Puffins says:

  39. Dobalina says:

From the first collection of words I read from you Mr Smith, I knew you’d be a good fit. To everyone else who didn’t make it, you are the heroes RPS deserves, but not the ones it needs right now.

  40. Fwiffo says:

With that carefree abandon and lovly mop I now appoint you the official RPS rascal.

    • Dozer says:

I’ve visited the RPS offices – they’re carpetted. No use for a mop I’m afraid!

  41. Binary77 says:

    Winner, winner – Chicken dinner.

  42. Optimaximal says:

I imagine the process went something as follows:

    sudo merge nu_rps_hivemind rps_hivemind adam_smith

    • Voxel_Music_Man says:

Optimaximal, these people are not accustomed to your non-microsoftian trickery!

  43. Jarenth says:

Welcome, mister Smith. Welcome… to your destiny.

  44. Advanced Assault Hippo says:

I’ve read some of Adam’s articles over the last few weeks and they’ve fitted right in to the ‘RPS vibe’ while also being a bit different to ‘the other three’, so looking like a very good choice.

  45. DiamondDog says:

I’ve enjoyed your writing so far Adam but I’m sorry, Quinns leaving us like that has left me bitter and incapable of trust.

I just can’t let myself get attached for fear that one day, you too shall leave us. I’m sorry but for the sake of my heart, that’s the way it has to be.

    Good luck Ada… Mr. Smith.

  46. godgoo says:

Many Congratulations, I too have been enjoying your work thus far. salute!

  47. frenz0rz says:

    Excellent news, welcome!

    But does he like foot-to-ball?

  48. fuggles says:

    Always another Smith…

  49. Lambchops says:

    Why, hello there Mr Smith.
