Filling The Gulf: Battlefield 3 Heads To Oman

My brain hurts, okay.

All these bloody Karks, coming into our country marrying our jobs… I think they should all go Back To Karkand. I hate myself.

Look, let’s just move on. Just watch the latest BF3 video, showing the Gulf of Oman below.

This is how shattered my brain is today. I’m seriously considering writing an “Oh man” homonym joke. I shouldn’t be let near a keyboard. Just watch:

  1. JackShandy says:

John walker you are just terrible.Get off the internet before you hurt yourself.

  2. Phinor says:

Haven’t been able to play the game for a week. After last week’s patch, I simply can’t connect to a single server. Battlelog keeps giving me 4-5 different connection related errors. Before the patch, everything was perfect, after the patch, I haven’t been able to join a single server.

What’s more worrying is that there’s still nothing official about fixing this issue. I’m not even sure if DICE has acknowledged that the problem exists, despite the 1000+ post thread on their own forums. And no, disabling UPNP didn’t solve the issue and that wouldn’t be an acceptable solution even if it worked.

Other than that, the trailer shows great promise. There’s destruction and everything this time around. My only wish is that I can actually play the game by the time this DLC ships (rumoured to be the 22th).

    • Random Guy says:

Damn dude, that is harsh. I had the initial connection problem but after that it resolved itself. Now a suggestion. If you are in the habit of killing processes in the background when trying to load the game, then ensure that even when Battlelog is open, you relaunch BF3 using the program icon.

      Hope that makes sense.

    • triple omega says:

Yeah the BF3 release has been absolutely abysmal unfortunately. There are so many problems with crashes, freezes and such that it looks more like an alpha than a finished product. And even beyond all that there are some very serious balancing issues that should have been fixed long before release.

It’s quite shameful that a supposedly AAA developer would release a game in such a state. It almost looks like there was no testing done at all before release. Bugs can slip through, but I can’t believe that the current weapon balancing of [weapon X] is significantly better in every way than [weapon Y] would have made it though any kind of testing.

Right now I’m actually held back by all the issues. I want to play, but I know that when I do I’ll have to deal with all the bullshit again. Such a shame.

    • harvb says:

Got to be honest, I’m with you on this. I haven’t been able to play the game for a week, since the last patch. I’m either “disconnected from EA” while waiting for a server to load or I’m dropped from a server within minutes. Getting quite annoyed now.

    • Shortwave says:

I had this issue and then I when to.

      program files / Origin Games / Battlefield 3 / pbsvc.exe
Took full Administrative rights over it.. Pernaps updated PB also.
      Reboot. Fixed.

      Hope this helps.

    • Phinor says:

I’ve seen and tried that PB fix. Other things people have recommended that has fixed it for them specifically, but has not helped anyone else (as far as I know, well the UPNP fix has worked for multiple people):

      -Reinstall Punkbuster
      -Reinstall the game
      -Turn off UPNP from router
      -Open/forward proper ports
-Shut down the following Windows services: Upnphost and Ssdpsrv
      -Shut down Avast
-Remove Firefox folder from Avast exceptions
      -Change Battlelog password
      -Try different web browsers
-Reconnect up to five times to the same server
-Remove certain lines from Windows hosts file
-Buy a better computer (haven’t tried yet)
      -Buy a PS3 (haven’t tried yet)

That’s just the things I could remember having tried. As I said, a lot of fixes that *might* fix the issue but won’t do a thing for the majority. But do keep the suggestions coming, perhaps there’s some magical fix yet to be found. Also would be nice if DICE had an opinion on this matter.

    • galaxion says:

I had PB disconnecting me on every game since the patch and I tried everything bar re-installing windows.
The solution? Join a non punkbuster server. Spawn; now you can access the in-game menu. Go to game options and make sure allow punkbuster is set to YES.
Quite ridiculous that you can’t access the game menu until you are in a server.

    • Phinor says:

Aye, I don’t think my (&others) issue is even related to Punkbuster because we can’t connect to non-Punkbuster servers either.

    • Magus44 says:

Yay. I’m not alone! I havent looked at the forum, but I pretty much gave up after a couple of tries and went off to Skyrim again.
Was playing perfectly pre patch, and now cant get in for more than a few minutes, and even then it runs horrible.
Hopefully the delay is because of the Thanksgiving weekend or something, and they’ll come in and fix it in a few days. (Hey I can hope) Seriously sucks though, was having a blast.

  3. tungstenHead says:

The skid steer loader makes me happy.

    • GenBanks says:

I must say I lol’d when I saw that, needed the caption ‘dey see me rollin’, dey hatin’

  4. Tyrone Slothrop. says:

Not a substantive comment but I really can’t wait for this.

  5. The_Great_Skratsby says:

I wish the strategic and teamwork tools were in the game, then Mr Context Sensitive Q.

    • dontnormally says:

Am I the only one who really enjoyed playing Commander in BF2?

    • westyfield says:

Of course you weren’t. Commander was awesome, even more so in 2142.

    • Synesthesia says:

i wish i played 2142, here in argentina there was 0 playerbase.
And yep, i loved commander. Some good tactical play is always beautiful. I wish they put some sort of voip inside, the framework is already installed within battle log. Squad chat-parties, or somthing, at least a glint of an option for that, would be absolutely delightful.

Wont happen though. We all know it.

    • Beardface says:

Commander was a cool idea, but one that worked maybe 20% of the time. I’m glad to see it gone.

  6. Shortwave says:

New maps greatly desired. I like things go boom.

  7. Demiath says:

    Oh, man? Ya, man!

  8. TheLordHimself says:

Does anyone else feel like the unlocks have sort of ruined this game? I enjoyed the unlock system in BC2 and BF2, but now I actually feel like I’ve bought a game that I can’t play fully. I really really loved BF2, in particular the helicopters, playing with a mate in the gun seat or the other way round and using the TV missiles etc.

The other day I calculated that at my current rate of play, it will take me 50 days to unlock the TV missiles in BF3, assuming I play every day, which I can’t do. I really feel like this game is actually handicapping people who don’t have the time to play all day every day. It seems a bit irrational to blame COD, but I can’t help but be a bit heart broken at how much trying to compete with the COD series has poisoned the Battlefield series. I really miss BF2. I miss stunt servers. I miss jets with bombs. I miss not having to grind for hours to use what was an integral part of the game. :_(

    • Cheebahh says:

Absolutely, it’s the reason I’m finding it hard to put in more than my 20 odd hours so far.

    • PleasingFungus says:

      Fourthed, etc.

    • Calneon says:

or infantry it’s fine, but I agree on the vehicle front. It looks like you really need rocket pods for jets in order to kill stuff on the ground, and it looks like i’ll have to spend at least an hour more flying around trying to pick off other jets (who already have air radar, which I don’t), before I can get them. I still love the game, just one part that does annoy me.

    • grundus says:

Frankly I prefer BF3’s to BC2’s unlock system. I could never quite grasp why you had to grind for some time to unlock one sight, then the next two class unlocks after that were the other sights. Same goes for all-class weapons, you’d unlock a load of handguns, then a load of PDWs, then all the shotguns (I am vastly overstating this), which seemed like really strange pacing. Now we have sights per weapon, which is better, and we seem to unlock a few handguns, a shotgun, a few more handguns, a PDW and so on.

That said I can’t believe the vehicle unlock tree. Jets are utterly useless Stingerbait until you have flares, which puts a good number off them I’m sure. I stuck with them and got the (admittedly not huge) 300 points just from disables, but I was flying with a mouse back then. Since I decided to do the jets properly I bought a 360 controller and flying (jets, helis are still better with a mouse) is a dream. Still, I prefer games where you unlock more of the same, not massively better stuff as you go on. I think that might be the one thing Black Ops did well; I felt like after a while I already had the best stuff, and the later stuff was for when I got bored. To give one player the ability to see every jet on the battlefield when others will only just have heat seeking missiles is unfair, because people just buying the game in, say, February, will be at an epic disadvantage. For the record, I’ve just unlocked the rockets and I’ve played for 20 hours, so I’m not bitching about the fact that I’m way behind everyone else. Not that I’m particularly far through the jet unlock tree, either, but you know what I mean.

Still, at least they took magnum ammo out.

    • Synesthesia says:

yep, not too cool. Wont there be bombs on jets? I miss blowing up bridges.
Though the dragging unlocks forced me to find an air battles only server, which was pretty cool. Helicopters fighting it off with heat seekers and missiles while there were dogfights above them. Im gonna play some now.

  9. Calneon says:

    Reply fail :(.

  10. nubbuka says:

Can’t wait to play it :D
Really missed the f-35b, I thought about his ability to hover and how cool it would be if they made it super strong. Hovering next to a tank, spraying him like crazy and swooping away.
Do you guys know if there is gonna be a two seated jet in the future? Because except for that I am really happy about this DLC.

  11. Jibb Smart says:

    Awesome. Awesome awesome awesome.

  12. SimSim says:

Memories…Battlefield 2 demo had only this map and i have spent few dozens of hours in it.

  13. UnGame says:

Would love to play this game, unfortunately it is an not an game – it is an “un-game”.

  14. Thiefsie says:

All I want for BF3 is vehicle unlocks to be gone for (or at least the weapon ones), Bombing enabled and then following that bombing of strategic geographical items enabled such as bridges, buildings, towers, gun ports etc, that can then be repaired by Engineer’s as well to get it all working again. BF3 has been great – and surprisingly bug free for me so far – but it’s still a little shallower than what has come before apart from the destruction of scenery – which should be extended as I’ve outlined above!

  15. TODD says:

wowowowow another noob shooter game for hacker idiots tbh

    can’t pirate, won’t play
