S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Still Happening, Apparently

According to this Facebook page update posted last niught, Stalker 2 will continue to be developed. It reads: “The Stalker team is extremely happy! Why? Because we are continuing work on Stalker 2 after the holidays.” This is in spite of news before Christmas saying it was all over. Phew!

We’ve contacted GSC to see if we can find out a bit more about what’s been happening.

  1. Bfox says:

Wait, what was the whole story before with the studio dying and there never ever being another Stalker game?!

    What just happened!?

    • Kulantan says:

Me, my uncle and everybody’s dogs brought some/all of the Stalker games during the Steam “celebration of making every gamer bankrupt”.

I’m so glad that I got Pripyat during the sale, not only do I now own an amazing game but it also may have helped GSC stay open.

    • Shuck says:

Likely scenario: they have a few developers in the office trying to put together what they have into some sort of demo to raise investment capital to finish the game. Management is putting on the brave face to encourage investors. This has happened with other studios. If they follow the usual pattern, within six months they shut down for good. Fingers crossed that won’t happen in this case.

    • SuperNashwanPower says:

Mr Shuck, sir. You are that individual who, surrounded by friends laughing in a pub [or other social venue], always manages to say that one thing that brings sudden depressed silence, and an early call for a cab. Like a milder, slightly more likeable Buzz Killington.

  2. Siimon says:

    Tentatively… Yay!

    • noom says:

      Tentatively, agree.

    • sinister agent says:

      Tentatively, hello!

    • 12kill4 says:

      tentative tent pole

[side-note: that post above me seems to be a spam-bot which copies another post in the thread and then adds its stupid little link… I can’t remember seeing that before, is this a new thing?]

    • sneetch says:

A new species of spam bot I believe… hmmmm… damn, they’re evolving, what’s the bet that the AI that does eventually destroy humanity will be a spam bot that’s just trying to bypass someones spam filter?

    • PoulWrist says:

    • bear912 says:

      Long live STALKER!

    • RizziSmoov says:

Those kind of spambots are appearing all over, I’ve seen them in blogs and forums

    • thegammaray says:

      tentative tent pole

    • nyarlathotep-88 says:

Hurray!!! Best news I’ve hear in a while.

    • Lamb Chop says:

      I’ve ten tats

    • 12kill4 says:

      @ thegammaray

      Well played Sir.

    • thegammaray says:

      I’m just happy someone noticed.

  3. Sp4rkR4t says:

Except it will now be a 2d platformer published by PopCap?

  4. Echo Black says:

    Get back in here, Stalker!

    (Best news ever!)

  5. lijenstina says:

Hello! Hello! Hello, hello. Hello! Hello! Hello! Hello! Hello! Hello!

    Marked One, What the hell?!

  6. ahluka says:

I don’t understand how this is happening if they’re supposedly closing / closed, but YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

  7. Maldomel says:

So happy with that news, but how? I hope they explain. Or not, as long as I get a new stalker game, I’m fine with it.

  8. hello_mr.Trout says:

  9. eatfrog says:

it will be a freemium facebook game

    • yhancik says:

“Click to collect an artifact” “Great, you found a Gravi”
“Wait 2 hours to collect another artifact” “Don’t want to wait? Purchase credits here!”

    • Synesthesia says:

      no, NO! NOOORRFGGHH!!

    • lijenstina says:

      Sidorovich’s Little Mutant Farm

  10. MultiVaC says:

Well, I’m not sure exactly what happened here, but this is great news.

  11. Sonblade says:

    Something that was left out:
In a previous Blog post from one of the dev’s blogs, he stated that they’re working on little to no pay, and are building a preview build for the investor who saved the project to see if they are willing to go through with it fully. I’ll need to look for the post about it on the STALKER Southern Comfort facebook page, though.

  12. sonofsanta says:

Are these guys just destined to never make a game in less than, what was it, 6 years for the first one?

  13. konrad_ha says:

It will be reimagined as an isometric turn based strategy game.

  14. Nighthood says:

So the whole “closure” was a PR stunt?

That doesn’t fill me with hope.

    • coldvvvave says:

    • lurkalisk says:

Unless it wasn’t, in which case, narp.

    • coldvvvave says:

Oh, yeah, that story about corrupt SBU official who wanted a piece of GSC money? Totally true. He is now playing STALKER complete 2009 in his jail cell next to Yulia Timoshenko and crying tears.

    • Jimmy says:

I would have thought being stuck in the same cell as Yulia was a form of consolation..

    • Suits says:

      Exactly was I was thinking.

  15. Syra says:

  16. scatterbrainless says:

This news makes me so happy I want to push a small child into a gravity vortex

  17. jimjam says:

I am sure it will get a reboot…. at some point. But it’s too early for me to get hopes up at the moment.

  18. Pobb says:

Really hope this happens. I need some Stalker 2 in my life.

  19. kataras says:

Good news, I hope they do get paid for it though and that the investor doesn’t want to make it more mainstream in order to get his/her money back.

On the other hand, with so many mods now incorporating into COP maps from SOC, CS and older builds, I hope one day we will have a stable mod with all the maps, just in case STALKER 2 takes ages to finish.

  20. absolofdoom says:

Apparently Stalker “2” is the new Mirror’s Edge 2, then?

  21. Makariel says:

    happy new year indeed :-)

  22. 12kill4 says:

When I heard of the cancellation I was quietly hoping the ex-GSC guys who went on to make metro 2033 would pick up the project or the license and do a proper open world dealeo with the polish of that afore-mentioned Stalk-alike…. but this… this will do.

  23. rei says:

    I love everything right now.

  24. SoupDuJour says:

Still alive, I see! Well, that’s good!

    • Prime says:

That depends on how horribly the wounded is screaming and bleeding. Sometimes it’s better to have had a quick, clean death….

I would very much like a Stalker 2 though please, Mr Russian Investor-type person.

  25. nrvsNRG says:

    good news!
(although i had a feeling we would see stalker 2 all along)

  26. Brumisator says:

  27. Outright Villainy says:

I’m not a huge stalker fan, but this is good news; We definitely need more games like this.

  28. VelvetFistIronGlove says:

I have nothing original to say, so I will merely quote another:

STALKER 2 was never going to just happen – I’m not even sure it would felt like STALKER if it had. It couldn’t just follow the textbook procedure, or match the signature of all those other, lesser games. There would always have to be a meltdown, then containment, denial, and rehabilitation. And because this is a sequel, those events would have to be even more catastrophic than the four-year delay that violently reshaped the original. This is why I’m not wearing the black armband just yet. GSC Game World may be dead, but STALKER is bigger than Sergei Grigorovich. Call me fatalistic, but this all seems part of its plan.

    Dead End Thrills

  29. MellowKrogoth says:

Great news, here’s hoping the team gets generous and visionary funding and comes back to make the next great S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

  30. magnus says:

Maybe it’ll be like Chantelise but with Sidorivich and a burer instead.

  31. yourgrandma says:

Going to need more proof than a facebook post…

  32. Maserbeam says:

I registered merely to express my yayifications for the effort to bring us STALKER 2.

  33. Metalhead9806 says:

I will pre-order this and pay full price maybe even invest in a collectors edition if they make this game. No waiting for Steam sales I promise. I want a new stalker game.

  34. MrEvilGuy says:

I am exceptionally pleased with this news. Stalker, live long and prosper.
