Car ‘ere: Test Drive Ferrari Racing Legends

Atari have affixed a serious face to announce the next Test Drive game. I tried to make them smile as they did it by capering about, but the news was so grave and grim that not even a glimpse of a smile appeared. No Hawaii, no holidays, no career mode where you take a busboy all the way to luxury car owner, no balloons and bouncy castles. Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends has 50 determined classic Ferrari cars and 36 no-nonsense tracks. If it could be represented as a smiley, it would be :-|

But it is being made by the lovely chaps at Slightly Mad Studios, whose moniker belies their sim skills: they’ve been backing up the Need For Speed: Shift games into your garage on EA’s coin for a while. They actually make driving sims that attempt to balance accurately weighted sloshing of the fuel in the tanks with the fact that most players still lean when taking a corner. I have every faith that they’ll turn the text of the press release below into something worth playing.

Atari, one of the most recognized names in interactive entertainment, has announced the upcoming release of Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends. The latest chapter of the Test Drive saga focuses exclusively on the storied Ferrari brand, bringing over 70 years of the world’s most recognizable performance cars to the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC. Development of the title will be handled by world-class developer Slightly Mad Studios, bringing their extensive experience in the driving category. Production/Publishing partners Rombax Games and Bigben Interactive are proud to work with Avalanche, who has a partnership with Ferrari, thus ensuring that Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends delivers the ultimate track based racing experience.

    Does “Test Drive” have any meaning/franchise value anymore?

    It seems to be just a random collection of totally unrelated games that happen to share the name and have some cars in them. Next one will involve driving cars along tracks generated by your own library of MP3s.

      I miss the days when Test Drive was all about driving supercars over ordinary roads at ridiculously high speed.

      raeally yes, none of the 2 sandboxes held me interested, TDU 2 fixed the dark shadows but remained aestethicaly boring. stretching the races doesnt make em that much interesting. In fact I only finished Driver San Francisco since NFS MW. and I played all NFSs, CMRs and TDUs. Why in the hell did every racing game forget to be interesting?!! oh no, split second and blur nod’t count, those are arcadey BS.

    So it seems to me that atari may have completely let go of one of the best concepts in driving games. The ideas behind test drive unlimited 1 and 2 are so good its just the execution was a little bit sloppy. I just wish they would take a bit more time ot focus on improving test drives car rosta and mission set up instead of going off in a different direction all together.

    Hopefully they will run two versions of test drive simultaniously but after what happened with unlimited 2 its unlikely. Listen to your fans atari and the people that play your games and improve what you already have.

      Yeah, TDU2 was actually fun, until all that crap happened and the support for the game plunged (and the driving model was an acquired taste).

    This doesn’t sound very convincing. If if plays anything like the last two games, it would be a waste of a license.

      It’ll play a bit like the Shift-games, most likely (same devs). It was a Ferrari-game long before it became a Test Drive-game.

      I don’t know, I really loved the handling in the two Shift-games and if it’s anything like those (which is what I expect) I know I’ll have a great time with it.

    Note that they didn’t say “realistic”.

    I was terribly disappointed by TDU2’s handling which was arcadey, but also unintuitive. Cars either had perfect traction or were spinning wildly out of control. There was no middle ground where the car started to lose traction but was still controllable. There wasn’t any sense of weight to the cars either. Burnout Paradise was a good example of arcade physics done well.
    I hope they get things right this time around.

    Probably wont be nearly as well executed as NFS Porsche Unleashed with it`s history mode. But still might be worth waiting.

      Oh man, a Porshe Unleashed style campaign would be fantastic. I always thought that it was a neat way to learn about cars.
      Of course that means things would get insanely difficult very quickly, as you got to drive ancient open wheeled formula 1 cars with terrible brakes.
