Cliff “Positech” Harris has sent word that he will soon be the indie-dev-who-turned-publisher, because he is publishing Redshirt, the debut title from indie dev The Tiniest Shark. In the tradition of Positech’s Kudos games, Redshirt is a life sim set aboard a space station, and it takes a satirical look at the impact social networking might have on familiar sci-fi tropes: “Navigate the professional and interpersonal politics of the ubiquitous “Spacebook” to curry favor among friends and colleagues. As intense intergalactic conflict rages around you, it’s up to you to accrue those all-important “likes” on your status updates! Whether you’re looking for love, opportunities for promotion, or even a chance to play Zero-G golf with the captain, you can schmooze your way through social circles and claw your way up the career ladder. Perhaps you too can finally achieve the dream of an off-station transfer, or even the Redshirt’s opportunity of a lifetime: being sent on an away-mission!”
Redshirt should appear at some point this year.

Of course it remains to be seen if this will be any good, but it certainly sounds interesting. I think I’ll be keeping an eye out for this one.

Kudos meets star trek, eh? I can dig it.

Will it be possible transfer to DOOP?

I like how the ultimate goal is a transfer. It’s just too funny.

Or an away mission. Since away missions for redshirts traditionally end in death, that could even be seen as a form of suicide. Is life on that station really so bad?

I would have thought being the redshirt on an away mission is precisely the thing you’d be trying to avoid?
02/03/2012 at 12:46 VelvetFistIronGlove says:
You know that, but the redshirts don’t.

Think of it as one of your Sims’ aspirations that always crops up on the desire bar and never goes away. It’s totally the thing you don’t want to do, but oh it gives like 5000 life completion points!

The retirement plan is amazing and quick promotion is guaranteed.

Reddit The Game?
02/03/2012 at 14:33 Jackablade says:
There’s a game to be made about staving off your inevitable death as a Redshirt when the entire universe wants to do you in, from nasty alien beasties to unexpected exploding consoles.

reverse that. its too hard to die, hence why you’re on your 19th captain, you have to get killed BEFORE the captain inevitably is.

This makes me think of Whats In Spocks Scanner, which is good, as it is amusing.

This looks suspiciously similar to the new book by John Scalzi, Redshirts. Obviously the names are different, but similar, along with the typeface:

This sounds a LOT like Yahtzee’s space life sim beta he released a few years ago.

The picture on the website of a blond redshirt holding a mop only brings to mind Space Quest, so this has a lot to live up to!
