Fodder For Thought: Recruits

The alpha version of Recruits, a Cannon Foddery squad shooter, is available to play through Desura for people pre-ordering the full game. It’s a UDK-powered game, with simple objectives, tight maps and a sometimes infuriating fixed viewpoint. Enemy soldiers have a habit of being obscured by trees, meaning I’ve often been finding by following my squadmates’ lead. I shoot where they shoot, knowing that something must be there. It’s early days though and there’s promise in the explodey barrels, destructible scenery, and the simple joy of shooting guns and lobbing grenades. Enemy soldiers are vulnerable, spurting blood as they crumple after a single shot, while the player’s own squad are a little more robust. Less tension, more gung-ho charges. Trailer and more details below.

While I don’t think it’s quite ready for your pennies yet, Recruits is a solid if unspectacular little shooter. There are more features planned, including a morale system that makes soldiers less effective if they witness or commit traumatic events. One to keep an eye on.

Running with rifles with better graphics and less good?

    • Ross Angus says:

Thanks. I thought “Rifles” had had a facelift. But I couldn’t remember what it was called.

    • Hoaxfish says:

I like Running with Rifles abstract/mute pastel thing it has going on, though I guess it can get a bit “samey”.

    • theflamingskunk says:

This is the first alpha release however, Running with Rifles is already well into its Beta. Hopefully it will be made better and issues fixed with updates.

    • KFee says:

ya I agree, even though the graphic style of “Running with rifles” has its charm.
Nothing against “Recruits” but working with the UDK almost automatically makes your game look good ;)
Anyway, for now “Recruits” doesn’t look that interesting to me. Too tight scenes and no large scale multiplayer…

I still have the original Cannon Fodder on floppy disk. Should I frame the thing on the wall or what?

  3. ShellBurrito says:

This looks like a super-generic Alien Swarm imo

    • Snids says:

“super-generic” is an excellent term. You should have it minted onto a coin. And use that coin to purchase a entry into a book of popular lexicon.
