Air Buccaneers Now Boasts Octopi Air Ballooning

The Air Buccaneers remake continue apace, and Ludocraft wanted to let us know that it now features terrifying air-tentacles, with Octopus-based airships making war on each other in the misty skies of their peculiar world. Yes, that’s right, you can see the tentacular dirigibles blasting each other with bombards in the latest trailer, below. Yes, those crazy Ludofolk are clearly having fun with this remake of the classic mod. You can have fun with it too, because it’s currently available to play for free.

Anyone playing this? I am wondering if we need to organise an RPS game. Skyctopi below.

Oh and the previous gameplay trailer, for reference:

  1. HexagonalBolts says:

What do people think of it at the moment? Do the lovely ideas translate to a fun game?

  2. psyk says:

“Anyone playing this? I am wondering if we need to organise an RPS game”

    Do it.

  3. Kaira- says:

Ha, they actually showcased these last night in my town’s “Night of the Arts“. Cool stuff.

  4. Caspian says:

Hmmm, I fear that my somewhat irrational phobia of octopi may keep me away from this update – for the same reasons that I found the ‘FatBoy Slim’ bit in the closing ceremony highly problematic.

It’s a strange phobia until you realise that they are like hyper-smart, multiple-hearted, camouflaging, giant, beaked, underwater spiders with tentacles that can shoot ink and get through incredibly small spaces.

Irrational fear, or simply pragmatric planning for when they rise up and take over the planet?

    • Wodge says:

      Imagine if they had wings!

      I’d leave the planet.

    • misterT0AST says:

You forgot one part: they are delicious in a potato salad.

    • roryok says:

the underwater part is important though. That’s not where we live

      • Chaz says:

Not at the moment. A bit more global warming and it soon might be.

    • LTK says:

They actually have the same amount of heart as mammals; their heart just happens to be split in two, but they have two atria and two ventricles all together, if I’m not misaken.

    • Lord Custard Smingleigh says:

Non-aquatic locomotion test complete. Infestation of air-breathers detected. Terrestrial life categorized as “delicious”. Agent 8 returning to base to finalize plans for conquest and enslavement.

      • Oliver the Deckboy says:

These things definitely didn’t rise from the river next to our office and take over. No sir. That didn’t happen.

    • Arglebargle says:

And I no longer consume Octopus for just those reasons. It’s not good to eat things that are smarter than some of our cousins.

Hopefully, this will be taken into account by our new Octopi Overlords when they take over.

      Now Squid….they are the Devil!

I’ve been absent for some time, but now I remember why I used to love this web site. Thank you, I¡¦ll try and check back more frequently. How frequently you update your web site?

  5. kurtensen says:

I bought it yesterday thanks to Gamersgate’s summer deals, and boy it is so much fun. And at first the servers might seem like deserted, but once you get in one, people start to pop in almost instantly. And best thing of all is that with 4 people it’s loads of fun, but a bit laggy (being alpha and stuff).
But, yeah, organise that RPS game already, and give this game more love!!

  6. Lemming says:

I never played the mod, so I’ll wait for this. It looks great fun!

  7. aliwoo says:

Haha this looks great fun, can’t believe I never saw it before. Oh and octopuses is the plural of octopus

  8. Poppis says:

Oh didn’t realise the alpha was free. Is there not any RPS groups for this yet?

    • Harlander says:

Don’t think so – seems like there’s a lot of enthusiasm for it, though. I for one would love to get in on some of this.

  9. Jenks says:

Wow, this looks fantastic – the setting, art, and team based gameplay all have me really interested.

  10. Ancient Algae says:

Yes! I’ve been waiting for a game like this since Guns of Icarus. Can’t wait to hear more.

  11. temotodochi says:

Remember that Ludocraft is actually a part of University of Oulu, not a “regular” game developer.

    • Oliver the Deckboy says:

I just wish to correct what temotodochi said. LudoCraft indeed was part of the University of Oulu, but we’ve been an independent game development company since 2006.

Oh, and just to clarify, I’m the guy who writes the news on Great to see that so many of you like the octopus airforces we’ve shown on that new Beta Work-in-Progress video.

    • perruci says:

Hello, you used to write magnificent, but the last few posts have been kinda boring¡K I miss your tremendous writings. Past several posts are just a little out of track! come on!

  12. Anvilfolk says:

This feature on RPS actually brought quite a few more people on RPS. I think we played a few rounds with over 20 people! :)

It is awesome fun! Laughed the entire way through it… boarded another ship as it boarded us, then we counter-boarded and were successful, and then boarded another ship which had previously been taken, before succumbing to an enemy survivor who threw gunpowder grenades onto our ship.

Seriously, if more people get on here, they’ll be forced to make double-decker ships. SO GET ON THERE :D

  13. anark10n says:

Not a single One Piece reference …
    Takko balloon!!!

  14. ClockworkTiger says:

Oh wow! It’s the Communist Airborne Mollusk Militia from the Hellboy/The Goon crossover!

    link to

    • Oliver the Deckboy says:

Wow! I didn’t know about that. Must get my hands onto that Hellboy comic now. :)

  15. beema says:

Grey got released. Why was there no front page story about that!?

  16. Quistnix says:

Will this have a single player mode? I love the looks and setting but I’m really bad at a very specific kind of multitasking: I don’t play well with others.
