The Walls Are Melting! Minecraft Animated Textures

The secretive world of Minecraft snapshots, the semi-official weekly updates that Mojang puts out to test the updates, delivered a doozy of an update last week. It supports animated textures. The theory goes that people will use the textures to animate small blocks. So you could have fizzing fire crawling along a Redstone circuit, or maybe a you could use it to animate a powered circuit, like the frightening magic picture above. Cool, huh? Of course, some people have to take it too far.

You could just use it to animate every texture in the game, turning the world into a sliding, vomit-inducing puke hole of horror. This reminds me the carpet my old bank used to have. You’d stand in there, in the long line of robbers and old ladies, and the pattern would slurp and shift around in your peripheral vision. I honestly had to stand there and hold onto the counter, to fight the feeling of falling it would churn up. You have been warned.

Welcome to Pukecraft! The system is hugely flexible, and is only really constrained by PC power. Do you know what that means? That’s right! Behold!

Obviously the music is added for effect. I actually downloaded it to make sure I wasn’t being trolled. While it makes the game a bit unstable, and I had to allocate more RAM to it using Magic Launcher (which also let me run the new snapshot without replacing my main Minecraft install), but it worked. I even walked up to the wall and punched a hole in the video.

It was fun having a porn free Minecraft while it lasted.

First video – what Minecraft should look like if you eat the wrong type of mushroom. And in the game.

Paige. I see what you mean… Roy`s blurb is neat… last saturday I bought a top of the range Citroën 2CV from having made $9136 this last 5 weeks and in excess of ten-k last-munth. this is actually the most comfortable work I’ve had. I began this 5 months ago and straight away started to bring home minimum $74.. per-hr. I use this website..Job Creation

In my experience this video (so not the one you linked) is more like a bad shroom trip.

I’m getting flashbacks just looking at this, not good. xD

With their powers combined, some early Bowie, Mulled wine and an Oculus there is a good possibility of breaking through to the other side. The possibility of return is rather slim though, I’m afraid.

    What’s going on?

  4. Gap Gen says:

Well, this has existed for ages, so it’s not like texturing whatever you wanted wasn’t always possible: link to

    • LTK says:

Yeah, I had a stint in texturing months ago where I added a glint to diamonds, and a sheen to refined metals. It was pretty cool.

    • Hmm-Hmm. says:

Oh man that’s.. well.. I’m speechless.

  5. Tei says:

I think it would be more interesting to have a shader or something that make the vertext of leaf block “wave” in X,Y,Z. Or something to make the nature in minecraft look like afected by wind. This feature looks like the type of “explotable” thing that modders will make really shine.

  6. RedViv says:

I want slimy, bubbly, truly intestine-like netherrack.

Huh. So that’s what madness looks like.

Did I fall into a time machine back to 1992?

    • Skabooga says:

Certainly on par with some of Doom 2’s more egregious animated textures transgressions. Rotating flesh pillars, I’m looking at you. And vomiting.

      • Rawrian says:

If I remember correctly, it was more like a case of a special effect – you could make any texture on a wall scroll, it’s just that it was used only for those flesh pillars.

  9. SocraticIrony says:

    Obligatory: Animate ALL the textures!

    • fabulousfurrygingerfreakbrothers says:

I agree. I watched the whole of the second video expecting at some point the lintels and pillars to start spangling. Not a GTAIV-style programme. Sad :(

  10. SuicideKing says:

The first video kind of made me dizzy :|

Kaylee. I see what you mean… Paula`s remark is neat, yesterday I got a brand new Renault 4 after having made $4654 this last 5 weeks and-just over, $10,000 this past-munth. this is actually the easiest-work I have ever had. I actually started seven months/ago and pretty much immediately started bringing in over $78… per-hour. I follow this great link,

I’d rather see Jeb work on the engine. I dunno maybe Notch doesn’t comment his code and no one else can understand it.

Since the 1.8 beta the engine has had some serious issues with large parts of the landscape becoming invisible, even on my desktop with 8gb ram and 64bit W7, plus it crashes on 32 bit systems if you have the draw distance on full. The game also runs worse and worse every update.

Not that it matters, I’ve played hundreds of hours and seen everything/done everything.

    • FionaSarah says:

This feature comes as a side effect of rewriting the rendering engine AFAIK.

      • spectone says:

I thought it had something to do with the way multiplayer and single player code bases were unified. Originally single player did everything in the one process. Now there are two separate processes, the single player game runs a server as one process and client as the other. I think that somehow the server process is not gaining enough processing power and has trouble loading in parts of the map when needed.

    • Rawrian says:

I don’t know, I visit my hometown like twice a year and try running Minecraft on an old pc every time. Last week fps was considerably higher. There’s this bug with invisible blocks, though, but I suspect it might have something to do with integrated video – never saw it on my main PC.

  13. The Random One says:

Porn free Minecraft? Well, I suppose the kilometer-tall penises are more art than pornograpy, but still.

  14. Arkhonist says:

I suddenly feel extremely manly. Oh he-man…

  15. Liudeius says:

There’s nothing really special about this…
Any client that supported textures better than x16 already supported animated textures (At least I assume the HD patcher is what supports animated textures, I just use optifine since that bundles a bunch of stuff.)

It is good however, after Notch announcing that nothing better than x16 would be supported, to know that they actually came to the realization that HD textures are actually good to support.
