Backspace Is Handsome And Clean, Like You

Wisely-named indies Megabot have been working on Tron-visualated arena-shooter Backspace for a while, and now they’re starting to show it off, as you can see below via videovision. It’s a handsome thing, the top-down shooter that has played too much Darwinia, or something. My favourite item on their list of features contained in the game is this: “Explore a spherical environment, using teleports to move between multiple layers.” But there’s also: “Carry a mixture of cargo to solve puzzles and powerups for compound combat effects.”

It’s going to appear some time this year, and I want it.

Yeah, the panning shots at the start of the levels make me a bit hungry for these sort of game worlds. Abstract and diaphanous neon for great victory!

    That looks sweet indeed!

  2. Ross Angus says:

Great art style. Thanks for the heads-up, Jim.

  3. The First Door says:

Ooh, that looks incredibly lovely! I really like the idea of carrying the cargo nodes around with you, Snake-style.

“arean shooters” suggested to me, that it was pure multiplayer game.
The trailer didn’t look like it. Since I hate MP in general, I’m quite happy :)

  5. Runciter says:

Those trailing cargo pods reminded me of an old shmup called Gemini Wing.

  6. Low Life says:

All hail abstract and diaphanous neon!

  7. grable says:

This reminded me of Cobra Triangle for some reason… Thats a good thing btw ;)

  8. AmateurScience says:

Ooooh this looks lovely indeed. I look forward to hearing more.

  9. Urthman says:

Why hasn’t someone done arena shooter on a sphere before? That’s such a great idea.

Can’t tell if you’re being sincere or sarcastic, but there’s a game series for Playstation 3 and its portable family members called Super Stardust; it’s an arena shooter on a sphere.

I haven’t played it, but it looks just as fun as this game looks based on the videos I’ve seen.

    Yeah, this looks good.

  11. Mudlab says:

Reminds me of D-Zone, for some reason…

  12. Tuco says:

Not exactly my thing, but damn if this doesn’t look pretty.

Oooo, that does look nice! The mutability of the levels and the way the trangular baddies move (flopping about the triangular grid) really caught my eye, but it also sounds like it’ll be pretty fun. Raiden II’s Purple Bendy Lasers are my all-time favorite shooter powerup, but this one looks to have a little more variety and technique involved than that.

    No, wait, wrong post…
