Hawken’s Next Update Is A Great Healer

I’ve rather been enjoying my games of Hawken. It’s very much a deathmatch arena game of old, only spangled up with its own roboty game modes and lovely visuals. The next update looks promising, too, bringing us a lovely-looking new map called Front Line, as well as a new robot. Said robot is the first genuine support mech in the game, and it’s called The Technician. It’s a medic, yes, but also it enables heat management of other robots, as well as doing shooty stuff – making it a support-bot with some offensive capabilities of its own. If this were a traditional deathmatch game I’d be looking forward to those first few games after the patch where everyone is playing as the technician and they’re all unable to kill each other. As it is, folks will have to shell out real world cash or grind-gathered resources for this chap, so they won’t be ubiquitous post-patch.

Anyway, you can see all the intricate details of the update here.

John Walker is a terrible Technician pilot.

This is good news as I naturally gravitate towards the healer classes in shooty games. They need to get the balance between shooting and healing right, though. Killing Floor does it pretty good but healing in TF2 can be really boring.

    • El_Emmental says:

That’s why TF2 shouldn’t be played with more than 24 players (original design if I recall correctly), otherwise you end up with a fixed front line, so Medics have to sit back and vaguely heal all the troops, only making a small push once the Über is filled, fall back, rinse and repeat.

With less player you can make pushes on an alternate path with 2 or 3 teammates easily, without directly facing a wall of sentries/rockets/stickies/bullets.

I am of the same mind. While playing Battlefield 3 I would regularly climb the leaderboards by simply rushing out stupidly to heal and revive my teammates.

It looks to be a very interesting addition to the game, specially the default primary/secondary/alt-mode secondary weapons, which should add some nice variety to the game.

As a side note it’s riled up the “most hardcore” of the playerbase, which is always enjoyable.

Also there’s currently a code ( GAMESTAR_HAWKEN ) doing the rounds that gives 10k credits, which is far more than needed to buy the Technician when it comes out.

Is this game out of beta yet?

    • dorobo says:

No its still beta.. but it’s playable as it is. They just keep improving it and adding more stuff as they go.
