Space Shooter Meets Metroidvania In A.N.N.E

Metroidvania meets Gradius sounds like the sort of thing you could only wish for, chin leant your your interlocked fingers, elbows on the windowsill looking out into a rainy day. But by crikey, that’s what Gamesbymo are up to with A.N.N.E. A 2D pixel art hybrid of ship-flying shoot-em-up and physics puzzles, and on-foot platforming that promises Metroid-like progression. Wants.

All that is accompanied by some really beautiful music from Miyamo, which you can see and hear below.

There’s an inevitable Kickstarter, looking for $70k that I’m now wishing I had to put in there – although he’s already over a tenth of the way there in just a couple of days. Here’s the pitch video:

        Because the only games that get made should be “annual franchise product” financed by the games arm of Consolidated Diversified Holdings*.

          And with Kickstarter, 90% of the games we shall have is “you loved this 10 years ago and never got a sequel? We will make it for you! (or at least a HD remake)”

          One way or another, the mass of money goes for the “known franchises”, recent or old. Projects which are actually original or new don’t really get millions in funding (crowd or publisher).

            Correction. We get games the likes of which haven’t been released in a decade PLUS interesting new ideas like Moon Cadet, Starship Corporation, Sealark and now A.N.N.E. Thats far more varied than anything I’m seeing from the mainstream.

            Applies to games, kickstarters, fan fiction, real fiction, 50 shades of grey, movies moved straight to video, basically anything that doesn’t have some absurdly high barrier to entry.

            The internet has insanely popularized our access to entertainment products, the only downside being that you have to filter the crap from the gems. Some folks get indignant about that, the very sight of the crap somehow being offensive to them, in that they’re asking folks to put up their hard earned money to fund “this crap”, which is why they might justify doing away with the whole thing altogether in order to avoid having to see this nasty affront to their moral philosophy and general worldview.

            …phew. That was a mouthful, but I hope you all get the point.

      Indie developers, despite our many talents, have not yet mastered the fine art of reaching directly into our asses and pulling out a game budget. So, you know: Kickstarter.

        Thing is, though I am not personally against Kickstarter and have even backed quite a few projects, to me indie development has always been about developing without a budget. You know, the “yeah I’m just a guy who spends his nights coding away in the attic” idea.
        Ofcourse, I’m not saying the devs don’t deserve the money, after all, people willingly give it to them, who am I to complain? It’s just that my old ideal of an indie dev is slowly dying out, and that saddens me.

    That’s actually a little worrisome. If donations keep up at the current rate, it’ll make its base funding goal 15 days in; but donations almost never do that with Kickstarter campaigns. The first three days are biggest, along with the last two. So unless this gets a lot of media attention to keep donations going during the middle period, it’s going to go into its last week with a lot of ground to cover.

    Imagine that concept in the Sine Mora’s universe. That’d be a golden game.

    In my revisionist/wish history Starfox was actually a Metroid spin-off with Samus and her ship, and when Metroid Prime arrived it had Descent like sections.

    Is it the standard? Did I miss the memo? Why does every game need damage indicators? It may be just me, but it’s one of those little things that take you out of the game’s world. “Look at all these numbers. You’re reducing the hit points of this entity. You’re playing a video game, you know? In case you forgot.”

    It just seems to me that game developers grossly overestimate people’s love of numbers. Hit points, experience points, skill points, pointy points points. Dang.

    EDIT: I know this game probably has them because it seems heavily inspired by Cave Story, but still. The Metroid games did just fine without.
