Shut Up: Barkley 2 Looks… Good?

I wish this person was writing all games.

With a name like The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa, you’d expect something to be a joke first and a game second. But, like Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden before it, TMROTNN:EFN7-ROC:TOGOTM-C2OTHBS is actually looking like a rather enjoyable game to, you know, play. The genre’s entirely different – abandoning the mean, merciless, hardwood courts of JRPG parody for a metallic future motif and gun-heavy mechanics to match – but consider me very interested.

This is all pre-alpha, but it looks to be coming along pretty nicely. Nothing too flashy, but some solid, chunky-looking retro blasting nonetheless. If nothing else, I imagine it’ll ferry me between jokes in serviceable style. Also, I’m really looking forward to people walking in and asking, “What’s this game about?” so I can retort with, “Duh. Basketball, obviously.”

Barkley 2 performed a chaos dunk on Kickstarter late last year, with cash-colored ash raining down to the tune of $120,335. The sequel to what was already one of the silliest parody games ever hopes to up the ante with an open world, plot-shattering choices, and a tale for the ages about wayward jocks, B-Ball-induced comas, and Cyberdwarves.

It’ll be out late this year, at which point it will immediately be hailed as the Citizen Kane of videogames. Or at least the Space Jam of games. Probably also Half-Life 12.

TMROTNN:EFN7-ROC:TOGOTM-C2OTHBS is this redeemable on Steam?

  2. burgerman says:

This is honestly my most anticipated game.

  3. Turkey says:

The WIT better be just GOTY 2013 copy pasted over and over again.

  4. Tei says:

This looks like a arcade version of humour of Dungeon of Dredmor. The game gets directly to the top of my list “must get”.

  5. Keyrock says:

The twin-stick shooter action looks pretty solid and you know the joke’s will deliver. I’m so glad I backed this, it’s going to be great.

  6. 2helix4u says:

If any of you havent played the first pick it up, its free and downloads quickly. The actual game is about 3-5 hours long and its honestly one of the best written games I’ve ever seen. It vies with the Portals in terms of funniest game I’ve played, Barkley’s save points probably give it the edge.

This game was one of the reasons I didn’t like Blood Dragon, since they are the same comedy styling but Barkley is genuinely hilarious, well written and creative in places whereas Blood Dragon had much worse writers essentially making the same joke.

  7. Pich says:

    [slams internally]

  8. Low Life says:

I think the proper description would be that this is the Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden of video games.

  9. Totally heterosexual says:

The first one was the greatest rpg parody ever. This one looks like an actually good game.

    Weird world we live in.

  10. Samuelson says:

Looks a lot like Shining Soul 2 for GBA (combat – wise)!

  11. Wedge says:

I would hope they wouldn’t have gathered $120k just to make a joke. This is probably the most anticipated game of all the kickstarterers I backed, very glad to see it coming along.

    • MellowKrogoth says:

You backed the wrong thing then, because the first game (though good in it’s own way) was a joke, and you backed the sequel to a joke, which is logically gonna be [fill in the blank] as well.

  12. says:

The art style reminds me of the 2,300 A.D. from Chrono Trigger.

    • Rath says:

It does look very much like that, and the guy with the mohawk is also a reminder of the guy in that time period who challenged you to that race.

  13. welverin says:

    Best tag ever.

  14. Alevice says:

Reminds me of top down Genesis shooters

  15. Fondue says:

The dialogue in that image is stolen from a certain Cboyardee tweet link to . 2010, so I think it predates this game.

    • Teal Hydra says:

Stealing from yourself is a little difficult, don’t you think? Plus, they were probably working on the game by then.

  16. funzportz says:

I love that colour palette. And the octagonal shooting. Now what does that remind me of….

    Special power!
    Node activated!

    Any takers?
