Silent Hunter Online Open Beta? Fo’ Sho

Sho! Gettit? SHO?
Browsers can do anything. Right now I have a window open tracking my GTA:V delivery status, another that is listing cold-relief remedies *sneezes*, and a third with a video of a cat that I’m using to wipe away my snot-headed misery. If I didn’t have a browser, none of that information would be available to me and I’d be miserable. I also wouldn’t have my girlfriend. Something else that wouldn’t be available would be Silent Hunter Online, Ubisoft’s free-to-play sub sim based on their venerable series of tactical submersible combat in metal dongs. It was invite only for a while, but now it’s surfaced with an open beta.

I am sort of interested in this. I have lovely memories of the third game, where I ignored the theme and setting and pretended I was a shark. There were a few toggles that just let me get on with the business of shooting torpedoes, diving, and taking pretty screenshots. I have not so lovely memories of four and five: both arrived into my PC port with holes in their sides, water slushing in, and Cary Grant looking miserable. I understand they’ve largely been patched up by the fans, but isn’t that the developer’s duty? The fans can’t rescue this version if it scrapes along the bottom.

SHO won’t allow me to be a silly as the full games, with it focusing on the planning more than the 3D loveliness, but for those who enjoy plotting courses and waiting for hours, it’s waiting for you right now.

As much as I used to love Silent Hunter, any game with the “online” suffix makes me inwardly cringe. I take it it’s F2P?

Ubisoft are also working on Panzer General Online and Anno Online. Also, last year’s Ghost Recon Online and the recent The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot. They are really pushing this.

We will pass through the American patrols, past their sonar nets, and lay off their largest city, and listen to their rock and roll…

I had the third game but could never get it to work :( Sad times.

Oh my. It was so awesome too. :(

Indeed it was. I’ve never racked up more time on a single game – and that includes the Total War games. Over the years, I’ve had three copies. The only other game I’ve ever bothered to replace is Theme Hospital.

I wished they provided something a bit less meagre for an ending though. If I spent hundreds of hours on a massive war spanning U-boat campaign, I expect to see something beyond “game over – the war is finished” on the mission end screen. Hell, just a film clip of an occupied Berlin or something would do. And people complained about Mass Effect’s end?

Lucky the ending wasn’t your brave crew, having survived countless hours at sea, being strafed / bombed into oblivion by the RAF at the dockside…

I have fond memories of the third game as well, though I only ever sank about 4-5 ships in all my games. I sucked at it, is what I’m saying. I bought the 4th one when it came out as a Ubisoft Exclusive, but my first mission generated by the “dynamic campaign” plotted a waypoint somewhere in the middle of what was undoubtedly land. I kinda got annoyed at that and never went back.

I heard it has deep gameplay.

My god, how can you be so insensitive? My grandfather died in a submarine and to this day my family still suffers, and you don’t see a single trigger warning in this article. All these bad memories coming back… thanks a lot, assholes.

Also, do actually check out the 3D bits (periscope view) here, they’re not what you’d expect from a Flash game at all.

I’m mildly disappointed that the narrator did not have a German accent. I thought he sounded a tiny bit French too.

Does he mean he found his girlfriend on the Internet? Or does he mean his girlfriend is a website? We may never know.

Huh, you know, it’s been a while, but I loved Gato and Silent Service back in the day. Maybe I should

Yeah. Flash won’t let me play this game. Continually crashes every time I try to load it.

Same here if I use Firefox. Chrome is just fine.

Not sure it’s worth your while though.
