Would You Like A Wildstar Beta Key? We’ve Got 700

Better late than never.

Update: Aaaaand the keys are all gone. That didn’t take long. Sorry to those who missed out, and we hope those of you quick enough to get a key have a pleasant weekend. Come back and tell the rest of us what you think of the game in the comments.

Earlier this week we linked to a communal pool of 40,000 Wildstar beta keys. They vanished in an instant, swallowed whole by the swelling masses who want to play NCSoft’s new scifi MMO. Now we have 700 more keys to give away which are just for us and, if you’re fast enough, just for you. If you fancy playing the game this weekend, head below.

Wildstar is a sci-fi MMO determined to serve almost every possible type of MMO player, whether you want to build and craft your own floating island on the sky, bash aliens and monsters all day, or just wander around enjoying the pretty vistas. I’ve played quite a bit of it at press events over the past couple of years, and I’ve enjoyed it more than any MMO of this type in a long time. Yeah, it’s World of Warcraft-ish. But that game had its charms, once, and Wildstar has a few neat ideas of its own. It gives good WoW.

Here is more information from the developers:

Or you can read our hands-on Wildstar previews

Double-Or you can try it for yourselves by entering your email address in the widget below. It’s first come, first served, so if you’re one of the first 700 people, it should send you an email shortly afterward containing your key.

The widget did appear here, but we’ve removed it since there aren’t any keys left. Sorry!

The keys will be valid for this weekend only, netting you access to the game’s servers from 3pm GMT earlier today (we’re late!) to 7:59am on Monday March 3rd. Once you receive the key, you need to sign up for an NCSoft account at the Wildstar website, follow the links to register for the beta, and then click the “Apply a code”.

The keys are being distributed through godankey.com, who won’t use any email address for commercial purposes.

    so i guess…. First!

    • TechnicalBen says:

Less time posting more time typing emails…
Which is what I did (email, not multiples, that would be unfair). But I just noticed it’s a 3 day beta and I doubt I’ll have the time for it over the weekend.

    • Koozer says:

      But last in our hearts.

  2. Ottochops says:

Got One! Thanks RPS! and whatever Godanky is…

  3. xfstef says:

… I guess I didn’t need to study for that exam on Monday anyway …

  4. mentor07825 says:

    Woot! Got it! Thanks RPS!

  5. frightlever says:

Yawn… sorry, reflex when you mentioned Wildstar.

  6. Some_Guy says:

Dam, they went quick. Anyone got a spare one?

    • Beernut says:

      think fast:
(won’t have time to play this weekend and requested a key before I read all the information)

  7. Nevard says:

Blimey, it’s not been half an hour and they’re all gone.
I should reflexively refresh your front page more often and maybe I’ll catch one next time!

    edit: thanks Graham <3

On a sidenote, RPS Staff: Are you aware that your Forum is currently (and has been since the 26th) roadblocked by one of the Eurogamer Ad Servers? Trying to load the Forum without an Adblocker results in a permanent loop between two servers and leads to loading times of 2 Minutes plus per page.

  9. Horg says:

I got to try it out last weekend when they did the 40k key give away. I’ll just say now that I went in with low expectations, but was still honestly shocked by how dull this game is. I was expecting Wildstar to front load the interesting content a bit, you know, to generate some hype. However, the starting areas are some of the worst i’ve ever seen in an MMO. The fetch and kill quests are dull even by the standards of the genre. The quest text reads like it was written by a small child, displayed in a blurry grey front on a pale blue background. It’s as if they actually don’t want you to read it, and after about an hour of eye strain that’s exactly what happened. Factions are utterly uninteresting, and while they have gone for a very caricatured art style to generate some atmosphere, the actual story characters and races simply fell out of the cliche tree hitting every branch on the way down. The bits of the open world I got to see were about as static and lifeless as classic WoW, with some token intractable ”broken” objects thrown in for you to ”fix” as your only way of interacting with the world other than killing mobs. I managed to last 4 hours before rage uninstalling.

I mean, some people seem to be coming away with really positive feedback from Wildstar, so am I missing something? Does it actually get better further in? Why is this good when WoW is getting stale? From what little i’ve seen, in every way that matters, this game is WoW. Just with the magic replaced by lazers.

    • bhauck says:

I got to try it out the same weekend, and I thought it was totally fine. Fall damage was a bit excessive, but I enjoyed jumping up hills and exploring anyway.

    • Koozer says:

I’m with you. If you’re truly fed up of WoW, just don’t bother with Wildstar. The paths business is just a gimmick, and being stunned means hammering away at F for no good reason. It does look nice though, combat’s okay by MMO standards and if you can still squeeze some enjoyment out of the WoW/Everquest model then you’ll enjoy yourself.

I will be trying TESO this weekend because I hate myself.

    • aepervius says:

I mostly agree with you (bit dull, quest text nigh unreadable). But I disagree with you about not having impact. There were bit of the open world which had actually impact, similar to the phasing tech in WoW WOTLK starter area but without the inconvenience of phasing (splitting the player). For example other people were burning hut, but they were still intact for me as long as I did not do the quest, while when I got the quest I burned those hut and they staed burned. So it is the best of both world, part of the world is changed by your action, “phasing” , but we all shared the map. Now I do agree there were too few of those quests though.

ETA: I haven’t gone to high level , only roughly up to 12.

    • Flopper says:

But this douche canoe will still be in chat annoying everyone because he’s stuck playing Wildstar because all his non delusional friends are there.

Just hit 50 tonight. Game is amazing. The guy is spot on about the UI and text though. Then again this dick beater is judging a closed beta UI… UI patch is next month and the new one they previewed looks awesome.

  10. zachdidit says:

Just a heads up the weekend betas are still under NDA. The only thing they’re allowing people to talk about is what’s been released to the press and what’s been streamed on Twitch (levels 1-28 I think, but don’t hold me to that)

  11. Funso Banjo says:

You should have made these available to regular visitors here, people who post comments, or people who visit the forum. Have a give away in the forums so people have to post. Make sure people are already registered to make comments, all sorts of ways to do it.

Instead a bunch of people were linked here, most of whom have never visited RPS in their lives, and they got the keys. A few RPS dudes got keys, I hope, I hope they enjoy the beta.

    • Nevard says:

I’m curious, how do you propose that they would actually do that?
Not all RPS commenters want Wildstar beta keys so they can’t just use accounts as a random mailing list (I’m not sure they could do that anyway) and there… isn’t really any other method for giving out keys than the one they used. Asking people to leave a comment wouldn’t stop people signing up just to leave a comment, sorting through those for ones who have post history would be an extraordinary effort considering that there were 700 keys.

This wasn’t a perfect method but I think it was probably the best they could have used.

      • Funso Banjo says:

A give away in the forums for people who have an account creation date before today. Just post a reply to the announcement thread with your email address. Your register date is right there next to your name.

Foolproof, easy to do, and virtually no effort required on the admins side of things. Many modern BBs have this functionality built into them now so that it could even be completely automated except for that initial post in the thread.

        • Nevard says:

Well ok but that only fulfils one of your three criteria of “Regular visitors here, people who post comments, or people who visit the forum”.
There’s plenty of people who comment regularly on the articles but don’t care to sign up to the forums, so under your rules wouldn’t be eligible for a key.

    • Premium User Badge

      Graham Smith says:

I share your frustration with these systems. We’re working towards a better way to deliver keys to loyal readers, though right now our forum doesn’t have the functionality for it.

We went with this method in the meantime as it was the most straightforward available. We didn’t tweet the link for the first twenty minutes of the keys being here – until most of them were gone, really – to try to give people naturally visiting the main page the chance to grab them. I think a lot of them would have gone to those readers.

Either way, more giveaways and better systems to come in due course.

      • Gnoupi says:

There was a time during which such giveaways were going in priority to the RPS subscribers, just saying.. :P

  12. English Bob says:

Ridiculous. I wait for ages, refreshing the page, waiting for your giveaway. I go and eat some dinner, come back, and the keys have come and gone. Hope the bots enjoy selling all their keys they got.

    • knocked says:

Hey Bob, I got a key before I realised it was limited to this weekend and won’t be able to play. You’re more than welcome to it. Now if I can only figure out how to send a PM.

      • English Bob says:

Wow, seriously? If you would do that, that would be unbelieveable! You can find me on Twitter if you have it, EnglishBob84

  13. db1331 says:

Haha, this went about as well as setting out your whole bowl of Halloween candy on the front steps with a “Please take one” note.

  14. Alfrederique says:

Hum, I got a key, then realised I can’t play on mac, so if a fellow rps reader wants it, just pm me !

    • thales0310 says:

    • Jubaal says:

I would PM you however I’m too stupid to know how to do it!

Probably best it goes to someone with a bit more technical-whiz-bangery *sniff*

  15. thales0310 says:

    • vlonk says:

Won’t be able to participate this weekend, as I just found out.

      So there you go RPSers:

      • thales0310 says:

  17. Chinoxia says:

  18. Tei says:

  19. derbefrier says:

Do a timed entry and a then a random draw next time so those of us who don’t have jobs that let us sit in front of a computer all day might actually have a chance at one of these things. Just a suggestion. Grats to the winners

    • GCU Speak Softly says:

To be far, the original article was posted at 7:30 PM, so at least one person with a job (me) managed to get a key at 7:40 PM, so it’s not impossible. Though it is just luck that I came onto the site at the right time.

  20. big2dot says:

    I’m always too late!

  21. GCU Speak Softly says:

Thanks for the beta key, but it looks like the frickin’ enormous download may take me much of the weekend to complete…

  22. KinkyG says:

I keep on missing out. I feel like bad luck is all around me. People that did get a beta key. Have fun with this awesome game this weekend!

  23. mr.black says:

Huff, gone. I was too early having refreshed the page somewhere around 17:30..
No matter, I managed to get a taste of Wildstar two weeks ago when I got randomly picked for a stress test.
I can say… I don’t know… too little time, I guess. I’m not much of a(n) MMO type, I can generally manage to solo some 2-3 days and then the whole permanent mobs/bland quests thing kinda becomes boring, so I jump to other stuff. But all in all Wildstar wasn’t bad! Technically speaking everything went smooth as butter and gameplay-wise it was at least as good (read: enjoyable) as SWTOR. In the end of that 3 days I really wanted to keep on playing, which was, as said, a bit unexpected.
As for story, graphic, mechanics, I don’t want to disturb the ghosts of NDA (having skipped all the legalese in 3 seconds and having vague notion that I should not be doing stupid stuff with info), but also I really feel I didn’t experience enough to be able to form a final conclusive.. conclusion.
It has many similarities with grandpa WOW, but also stands firmly with swath of features in modern times. I wouldn’t say nothing revolutionary, but it seems to be solid evolution of the genre. We’ll see, perfectly possible it’ll surprize all. Or go down in flames to f2p in meere month.

  24. aexaaexz says:

    Hi~ Can i give a beta key?

  25. Bull0 says:

Guess this means we’re getting pretty close to release now? Right? RIGHT?

  26. MalkovTV says:

    I want a beta key.
    I’m looking for a 2 months ago :(

  27. Makh says:

Would be awesome to get a key. All my friends got one and playing atm, would love to join them!

  28. scrub tier says:

Figured I would finally create an account here and say cheers for the beta key!!

  29. Filnis says:

    Aaaand the key is gone.

  30. erkrnkripes says:

Argh waited all afternoon for beta key giveaway..went to make dinner and buy some beers..came back and it was over ! Bummed! Anyway hopefully I’ll get a key for next time…I think it’s a good sign that for the last beta I played I didn’t want to stop playing… I had a ton of fun, and there is a real emphasis on fun in this game…Enjoy the weekend all ye who got keys :)

  31. skrimarc says:

Got a spare key – please leave a comment if you grab it

  32. Chinoxia says:

    Please give me betakey :(

  33. Blodgarn says:

Have anyone spare wildstar key please ? Im realy despered =(

  34. Lemming says:

It’s a fun game, and worth a shot for anyone curious. It’s sort of a half-way house between WoW and GW2. The path system is easily the best part of it.

  35. forsakenmedic says:

Ya i would love a key

  36. Elbanis says:

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone still has some spare beta keys lying around? Would really love to give this a try :)
