Adwenture Time: Kaptain Brawe 2 – A Space Travesty

A mild eruption of excitable comments on Twitter drew my attention to the Kaptain Brawe 2 Kickstarter. Having just launched, it’s a long way from its $150,000 goal but there are 34 days to go and there seems to be a fair amount of good feeling for the original game. Unfortunately, that’s not the case here at RPS Towers where news of the crowdfunded sequel to the comedic sci-fi point and clicker was met with confusion and fear. I think I’m the only one who clicked on the link but all of our responses are below.

Graham: “I have no affection for nor understanding of the things talked about here.” I think he was talking about Kaptain Brawe 2 rather than the company of the RPS crew.

Alice: “I remember it being another so-so adventure game.” She may actually be talking about a weekend on the sauce. I DON’T KNOW.

Alec is too busy killing RoboFrankenNazis to respond.

John is on sabbatical and Twitter informs me that he was in a bakery earlier today. I don’t know if he voted for the croissants, the pastries or the beef pie.

Jim is exploring nature and is unavailable for comment.

Nathan is American so we sent him to bed a while ago.

I’m not sure about the game but I can imagine having a decent natter over a pint with Steve Ince. He has an impressive adventure game pedigree, including early Broken Sword games and Beneath A Steel Sky, and his accent puts me at ease. We’d talk about what it was like to work with Charles Cecil, about whether he’s a Sierra or a Lucasarts guy at heart, and why the North is just so much better than the South.

Perhaps I’d even be able to offer some feedback about Kaptain Brawe the first as well, seeing as the first half of the game is free for the duration of this Kickstarter.

I enjoy working on all the projects I undertake and with the clients behind them, but every so often there comes a project where I know that if I don’t work on it, the potential ideas that would have been generated will haunt my dreams for years to come.

So, to be a little self-indulgent – please consider backing this project and help all those potential ideas become a reality. I promise that Kaptain Brawe – A Space Travesty will be far more fun than visiting a zero-G massage parlour.

A zero-G massage parlour would just make it harder for the masseuse to apply force to the body and we’d probably end up in an embarrassing tangle of limbs…oh. I see.

    Having read this article made me realize that I actually own the first game on Steam, though I cannot for the life of me remember how I got hold of it. Apparently it was bought or obtained through a bundle, then immediately forgotten.

    Reading reviews on Steam makes that seem like a consistent experience among players, the game trying so hard to bring back Monkey Island by being exactly like Monkey Island to the point where it becomes completely and utterly forgettable. I wonder why something like that is actually getting a sequel Kickstarter. Did the lead designer hold a much stronger attachment to the story than everyone else did?

      I picked it up in a bundle on, I think, Groupees. Haven’t played it either but I’ll get around to it. Seems to be a marmite game because of the tone of the humour but I thought Benny Hill was a genius so not a problem.

        A thorough check of my bundle history reveals that it was on Bundle Stars. I joined Groupees only in late 2012 though, so it might have been bundled up there before that.

        But yeah, I’ll probably play it once I’m done with Final Fantasy XIV and my small pile of Capcom games that use GFWL and are expected to die in early June. That is, provided I don’t forget about it again.

    As I recall Kaptain Brawe was merely an okay game. It has nice looks, but nothing about it jumps directly in mind other than that the world was heavily retro/pulp sci-fi inspired. I don’t even remember if it had a cliffhanger or anything else I’d like to see resolved.

      It was a fun, though somewhat short game. I actually bought it on sale for $5, and I thought I got my money’s worth. The biggest two things it was missing was widescreen support (1024×768 only IIRC) and voice acting.

If he/she held one hand on your body while massaging with the other it would work, because the force pulling you down when e.g. massaging the neck would be counteracted by having one hand below the shoulder or something.
