Ex-Last Guardian Devs Making Ico-Esque PC Game

I would say PlayStation’s loss is our gain, but I really feel for the poor consolefolk on this one. They’ve waited years upon years for Ico/Shadow of the Colossus‘ developer Team Ico’s gigantic monster kitty adventure The Last Guardian, but they’ve gotten nary a tantalizing scrap for their troubles. It’s the console equivalent of Half-Life 3.

Now Vane is being made by a bunch of former Last Guardian devs who, it should be stressed, are no longer making The Last Guardian. Their new game does look absolutely stunning, though.

New studio Friend and Foe Games has the reins and they’ve given the game a “when it’s done” release date. Here’s what it’s about:

“A child with an odd ability stuck in a strange land. A dangerous natural environment inhabited by a strange civilization. Vane is an open-world adventure game based on mystery and exploration.”

“Vane is a single-player game being developed by a few ex-members of The Last Guardian team. The game focuses on unraveling the mysteries of an unknown land via exploration, puzzle-solving and other features yet to be revealed, in an atmospheric and powerful setting.”

Sounds kinda like a midpoint between Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, which is good news given that those games are downright legendary in a number of circles. The desert environment looks like a much bleaker Journey too, so if nothing else this one has some great influences.

Here’s hoping it eventually sees the light of day and maybe also includes a secret unlockable kitty bird that just sort of hangs out and occasionally meow-chirps quiet, confident reassurances that, no, Last Guardian wouldn’t have been that good anyway. And neither would Half-Life 3.

That kid better keep track of those loose polygons he’s shedding, he’ll need all the ones he can spare later on.

Naw, he’s being chased by an angry rockery.

So, while this is a Japanese game studio, none of the devs seem to be Japanese. I was hoping this might be some Japanese PC gaming renaissance but I guess not.

I don’t know, the concept looks pretty generic, and adding some more colour to that sandy gray landscapes wouldn’t hurt too much.

I got confused. Had to re-read again to realise the game wasn’t called Last Guardian but was a new game called Vane.

Wait a second, wait a second …. is that a female playable character?
If not, RPS SJWs – UNITE!
    If so, “yay”.

I’m sure the consolefolk will survive with Rime: link to youtu.be
I know which one I would rather have on PC.

They believe in self funding as much as possible? So, no kickstarter? Interesting that the main thing they choose to mention from their CV is a game that’s never come out and no one’s played…

Still, I always said I’d buy a PS3 when the Last Guardian came out. That might be a little bit pointless now, but colour me interested.

  9. DanMan says:

I shall be very interested. When it’s done.
