Teleporting Platformer Super III Is Cute, Launches Kickstarter

When I last wrote about Super III, it was but a twinkling GIF in its creator’s eye. Now it’s a series of GIFs, a trailer, a Kickstarter page, and multiple steps closer to delivering the kind of old-fashioned, action-platformer about a teleporting alien that perhaps you grew up playing.

Personally I grew up playing platformers with product placement like Zool, Cool Spot and Robocod, but this looks much better. Video embedded below.

It strikes me that there are two kinds of platformers now: the kind which use yer standard running/jumping as a delivery mechanism for a set of ideas (i.e. RPG loot, metaphors for sadness); and the kind in which canny navigation of floating platforms is the whole point. Super III the latter, with navigation delivered by standard run/jump/walljumps but also a quick horizontal teleport and screen wrap.

From the Kickstarter page:

SUPER III is an adventure game with an over-world and mission system similar to that of Super Mario 64. The over-world consists of several rooms filled with many portals. Each portal contains a level that has several missions to accomplish (including secret, undocumented missions) and new portals are turned on as the player collects batteries within the game. Batteries are rewarded after completing missions and can also be found in secret areas.

The team are looking for $39,000 to make the game and $12 (or $15 after the early birds get ’em) nets you a copy of the game, which is estimated to be finished in April 2015. Here, take this GIF:

    I can’t remember whether Robocod was product placement for Penguin bars or whether it was some knockoff like Puffin bars? What I do remember was, the ST version crashed when you reached a certain level so the game was impossible to complete :-(

      Robocod had the Penguin product placement, Zool had Chupa Chups, and of course Cool Spot was just 7up.

      IIRC, the DS port of Robocod may have had the Penguin bars swapped out with something else, although you are probably still rescuing actual penguins.

    A pie chart showing how my money will be spent? I’m not one for this sort of game, but it’s refreshing to see a Kickstarter project show some semblance of financial competence instead of “trust us with your cash, TRUST US”.
