Maia Update Improves Performance, Adds Nanoprinters

But what is he building in there, locked away inside his room? Something terrible, forged in bone?

Simon Roth, Programmer has created Maia, an in-development, Dungeon Keeper-like space colony management game available in Early Access. Update 0.46 is out and there's a video and details below.

This is described as Maia’s biggest update yet, owing in part to the focus on improving performance and squashing bugs. Roth now reckons that anyone running an equivalent i5 processor should be getting in the region of 60 frames per second, which doesn’t sound too impressive given Maia’s limited, isometric view, but becomes more so when you begin to understand exactly to what extent its world, physics and people are being simulated. This is Dungeon Keeper by way of Dwarf Fortress.

Which makes sense of the seemingly pernickety new features, which include the ability to research Botany and investigate flora, and to “3D print” robots to expand the workforce in your spacebase. There’s a full list of changes through on the game’s Steam Early Access news feed. If you were saddened by the quick end for Spacebase DF-9 – or felt its simulatory chops were never substantial enough – then it’s worth a look at this and previous updates.

Simon Roth is quite pleased with making an artifact.

    I thought Dwarf Fortress was Dungeon Keeper by way of itself. You build dungeons and everything.

    Maia has always been interesting to watch develop. It is gradually morphing from interesting set of systems into an actual game. I have no regrets about backing the kickstarter.

      I backed this on kickstarter too. It looks great, but I’ve never been sure when to put my time into Early Access/Kickstarter projects. I played the earliest available build of this, but there really wasn’t much to look at and I couldn’t make sense of it. I’ve ended up waiting until most of the things I’ve backed are released, so I’m not feeling done with them before they’re finished already.

    So glad to see this game developing. The pace might be slow, but better to progress slow and methodical towards a satisfying conclusion, than to fizzle out in disappointment after a woefully short burst of excitement.

    I’m following its progression since it was announced, but after each changelog the certain feeling of “still too Early Access for me” remained.

    But now i’m pretty tempted.

    So how is it?
    I’m aware of EA, i’m ok, with bugs glitches, content shortages and the like.
    But is it fun?
    Somewhat playable?
    Doesn’t crash all the time?

    My cursor is circling close to the buy button.

    Is this going to make my colonists start building things again? At the moment they all wander around until they starve/suffocate/die of sleep deprivation.

      Pretty much my experience. Or they get stuck inside the walls, which answers the question of “why aren’t you doing anything?” but creates the new question “how the heck did you get there?”

      Of course, mining them out to “rescue” them seems to barely ever work, so it’s probably all just the same bug(s).
