Roguelikes

As in, like Rogue, the permadeath of dungeon crawler almost no one today has played. Thanks to Spelunky and other revivalists, roguelike is now a vibrant genre stretching from the punishingly traditionalist to the roguelite, roguelikelike, and the basically-you-just-die-a-little-more-than-usual. Pick your poison.

Genre
RPG, Music, Roguelike
Release date
Out now!
What is it?
We’re willing to bet the best roguelike/dance mash-up of the year, Alec was more than impressed with the Early Access version’s nigh-complete ways. The final version finishes off the story with a new area, more boss battles and additional playable characters.

Cogmind

Official site

Genre
Early Access, Roguelike
Release date
TBA
What is it?
An ASCII sci-fi roguelike with a GUI to help make it playable without an hour’s reading, Cogmind is an impressive merging of old and new school game design. Green-on-black colouring gives a low-fi feel while additional colours only show up at moments of high action.

Delver

Official site

Genre
First-Person, Early Access, Roguelike
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Roguelikes have made a resurgence in part by borrowing from the genres that neighbour them. Delver is more traditional than most, with one significant change: it’s first-person. That doesn’t mean it’s about hiding behind cover and headshots; there’s still dungeons to crawl, levels to climb and magical items that define much of your combat effectiveness.

Catacomb Kids

Official site

Genre
Platformer, Roguelike
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Spelunky did a lot to revitalize the roguelike by blending in platformer mechanics, but in doing so it might have become a kind of genre of its own. Catacomb Kids is one of a handful of games that aims to follow in its footsteps, with procedural platforming through dungeons, but in this instance also characters with different abilities, more RPG-style stats, and a more tactile world.

Path To The Sky

Official site

Genre
Platformer, Roguelike
Release date
TBA 2015
What is it?
One more Spelunky-like? Don’t mind if I do. Pixellated and cartoony in tone and theme, it’s about climbing upwards through a tower rather than descending a dungeon. A little quiet on the update front since we last took a look mid-2014, hopefully it’s still being made.

FranknJohn

Official site

Genre
Platformer, Roguelike, Action, Early Access
Release date
Q4
What is it?
Binding of Isaac-ish 3D roguelike platforming with a detachable head on a chain as your projectile, getting customised by various upgrades along the descent. There’s a great punchy feel to the combat and a disturbing cartoony art style, similar to its inspiration.

Subaeria

Official site

Genre
Puzzle, Platformer, Roguelike
Release date
Setember 22nd 2015
What is it?
Puzzle platforming with permadeath, Subaeria is the latest in the Spelunky vein. However, it’s focused less on direct combat and more on tricking enemies into hitting one-another or the environment. It’s also got a branching storyline and multiple characters.

Tiny Wizard

Official site

Genre
Roguelike
Release date
TBA
What is it?
You can already play some development builds of this procedural dungeon crawler featuring a very violent wizard in its TIGSource thread. With some fantastic animation and a lovely low-rez art style, it’s quick and simple but with some promise.

Children of Morta

Official site

Genre
Roguelike, Action
Release date
October 2015
What is it?
The family of guardians for a cursed mountain must venture to its top to discover why the god that ruled it committed self-deicide, spreading evil throughout the land. Add permadeath and you’ve got a recipe for likely heartbreak.

Dragon Fin Soup

Official site

Genre
Roguelike, Action RPG
Release date
TBA 2015
What is it?
Described as a “SNES-style RPG”, this is rich in menus and items and stats. When you get into combat though, it’s lively and informed by roguelikes, with procedural dungeons and permadeath shaping the experience.

Darkest Dungeon

Official site

Genre
Roguelike, RPG, Early Access
Release date
Q3
What is it?
Party-based dungeoneering but with a gritty, realistic and hardcore slant where your team will become diseased and need to eat and sleep to survive. Going for a much darker tone than the norm. Now very successfully launced on Early Access.

Basingstoke

Official site

Genre
Stealth, Roguelike
Release date
TBA 2015
What is it?
Horror roguelike set in that most terrifying and horrible of locales, a British rural town. The aliens from Puppy Games’ other titles have landed and you need to survive so you can take as many of them with you as possible. Beautifully lit and styled, it’s the last gasp of the developers if it doesn’t sell well.

Curious Expedition

Official site

Genre
Survival Game, Early Access, Roguelike
Release date
Q3
What is it?
An expedition roguelike in which you select famous explorers and scientists from throughout history and then attempt to survive a new world, dealing with the natives you encountered and avoiding being eaten by dinosaurs. It’s cute and funny – Tesla and Curie fighting dinosaurs, etc. – but also a clever, system party-based roguelike.

Official site

Genre
Roguelike
Release date

What is it?
Utterly gorgeous mountain-delving, monster-slaying and perma-dying. It’s got a focus on exploration but won’t be combatless and when you do down, it’s time for a restart. There’s also vague whisperings of multiplayer modes, but nothing concrete so far.

Gloomwood

Official site

Genre
Roguelike, First Person
Release date
TBA
What is it?
A procedurally generated faux-Victorian city filled with spooky goings on, plague doctors and shootery combat. Not everything is as hostile as you might expect, and you can non-linearly progress between three districts.

All Gloomwood posts.

Space Rogue

Official site

Genre
Roguelike, Space
Release date
Q4
What is it?
Quite literally a Roguelike, there’s some likeness to an isometric FTL here, with more control over a single character and a richer, if smaller, universe to explore. There’s some strategy in there and exploration of star systems is open-ended.

Space Rogue review (early access).

Descent-like Ludum Dare entry turned full release. All the spaceship complex-exploring you could want with procedural generation and permadeath to boot. Really very pretty if you’re into chrome and neon.
