PC Games Of 2015: Those Wot Could Conceivably Be Good

PC Games In 2015 And Beyond

Featured post

Fighting games

The PC has never been the traditional home of beat-’em-ups, but nearly every big hitter comes to our shores now. Combined with ample indie efforts – Gang Beasts is a particular favourite – there’s more choice than ever for those looking to beat friends and foes around the chops.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse

Genre
Fighting
Release date
Out now!
What is it?
Dragon Ball Xenoverse’s loose justification for the self-insertion of player characters in various classic battles across the anime and manga franchise is, of course, time travel. It’ll also be possible to control the original impossibly proportioned shirtless men as they throw fist, foot and laser at one-another.

Mortal Kombat X

Genre
Fighting
Release date
Out now!
What is it?
The 21st entry in the goriest fighting game series around, MKX is from Netherrealm Studios, who have a notable talent for making actually interesting single-player content. Both the previous Mortal Kombat and Injustice, their DC Comics brawler, managed to tell a story and vary play between chapters better than any Capcom effort.

Out now!
What is it?
Fast-paced, hectic and filled with skill-testing moments, Paperbound’s an eclectic mix of anti-gravity combat, book-inspired art and pure fun. Since we last saw it there’s been an injection of characters to select and new modes added.

Samudai

Genre
Fighting
Release date
Out now!
What is it?
2 player brawler where samurai cats fight in a Super Smash Brothers-like system with no health bars, but increasing levels of knockback letting you throw opponents off stages. It combines this with Niddhogg’s level system, where you must defeat the same enemy on multiple screens to progress. At the end they turn into a boss.

Gang Beasts

Official site

Genre
Fighting, Early Access
Release date
TBA
What is it?
The jelly-bean murder simulator we’ve all been waiting for. Making a splash in the re-emerging single-screen multiplayer arena, the combination of fiddly controls and physics based wrestling has proven very popular in Early Access. The full version is set to feature character customisation and a singleplayer/co-op campaign.

Overgrowth

Genre
Fighting, Early Access
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Lugaru was weird because it was about kung fu bunnies. Overgrowth is the sequel, also about kung fu bunnies, but weirder because it’s also one of the most exciting development projects around. That’s because of its animation system, which doesn’t use canned or scripted movements but physics and logic to work out where it’s battling characters’ limbs should be in any given situation. After years of development, it’s still not done, but the currently available build is impressive and polished.

River City Ransom: Underground

Official site

Genre
Fighting, Side-Scrolling
Release date
Q3
What is it?
The original River City Ransom was a side-scrolling beat-’em-up, like a forebear to the better known Streets of Rage. What’s weird about Underground is that it’s not a spiritual successor, but an officially licensed, Kickstarted follow-up, taking the same art style and punch-kick mechanics of the original and expanding it with new levels, new enemies and more new everything.

Warstache

Official site

Genre
Fighting, Side-Scrolling
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Aggressive russian roulette but with more punching. It’s a fighting game at its core, beating up other players to keep them away from the one gun and bullet on the map, then shooting them dead once you’ve managed to grab it.

Aztez

Official site

Genre
Turn-Based Strategy, Fighting
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Yes, you read those genres correctly. Aztez mixes a Civ-style empire-building mode controlling the spread of the Aztecs across South America with a 2D sidescrolling beat-em-up to control outbreaks of resistance. Different events are procedurally generated, making every game different.

Treachery In Beatdown City

Genre
Fighting, Side-Scrolling
Release date
Q1
What is it?
As retro as they come, a side-scrolling beat-em-up – yeah, those are still a thing – about cops suplexing criminals in back alleys so they can beat up their bosses and save the day. Oh, and save the president. Of course. It took two tries but was funded via Kickstarter, scraping just over $50k.

Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm

Official site

Genre
Fighting
Release date
TBA
What is it?
A retro styled 2D fighting game, reminiscent of the non-Capcom classics and “anime-fighters” of the past. Similarities to King of Fighters are unsurprising, with a development team headed by three ex-SNK folks. It’s specifically developed for PC too, a 2015 trend we can get behind. Betas recently went out to those who backed during a highly successful Indiegogo campaign, so we expect this isn’t too far off.

Dead or Alive V: Last Round

Official site

Genre
Fighting
Release date
Out now!
What is it?
Making the triple threat play for silliest plot, most ridiculous moves and least sensible clothing options in a fighting game, Dead or Alive is certainly a series of ambition. Oddly, the PC port of this third re-release of the most recent entry in the franchise won’t include online play until some time after launch – a fact they’re at least displaying on the Steam page, but only under a read more.

Lightrise

Official site

Genre
Fighting

TBA
What is it?
A multiplayer focused brawler about wizards jumping around and throwing spells at each other. Combines magic spells, archery and sword fighting into a lethal trio of high skill ceiling combat. Doesn’t gate any options behind classes or level-ups, leaving it up to you to design the ultimate wizard battling machine.

Streets of Fury EX

Official site

Genre
Fighting
Release date
June 18th 2015
What is it?
A beat’em’up set in Paris where a varied cast of FMV-captured characters go after gang lords and other bad guys. There’s a host of modes and fifteen characters to plow through and a very, very old school feel to the whole thing.

All Streets of Fury EX posts.

NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 4

Official site

Genre
Fighting, Third Person, Action, Anime
Release date
Q4
What is it?
Bandai Namco’s latest attempt at the ‘longest game name’ crown and, coincidentally, fourth iteration of their current Naruto series of games about watching characters from the anime/manga kicking each other a lot. We have no idea what’s going on in the screenshot above, but we can confirm it’s cool.

Saint Seiya: Soldiers’ Soul – Knights of the Zodiac

Official site

Genre
Fighting, Anime
Release date
Q4
What is it?
A sequel to a PS3 fighting game based on a long running anime and manga series, the games are being brought to PC for the first time because “it’s no big deal” according to a producer. It’s about the pursuit of “cloths” – powerful armours imbued with the power of gods.

The highly accurate medieval combat model that has proved popular in recent times, combined with a large open world that allows you to take on roles other than soldier. Street Fighter V

Official site

Genre
Fighting
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
The next iteration in the only fighting game series that truly matters and one set to be absolutely huge for everyone involved. Cross-platform play with PS4 owners and a ready-made, massive community to take it to the professional level immediately. All Capcom have to do is not mess it up. And if they do, there’s always 3rd Strike.

Super Hotel Brothers, to give it an entirely made up alternate title, is exactly that. Groups of people sharing a hotel decide they no longer wish to share the hotel and beat each other up on the roof. In addition, they rip parts of the level off and hit each other with them. Stately.
