PC Games In 2015 And Beyond

MMOs

It’s easy to say that the the heyday for the MMO has ended, but perhaps all that’s happened is that people have finally stopped chasing after World of Warcraft. Does that allow space for more inventive things to be done with the format? Open worlds, lots of players – there’s got to be something you could do with that…

A Kickstarter-funded RPG by Richard Garriott which aims to revive the choice-heavy structure of Ultima, particularly Ultima Online. It remains to be seen whether it can meet modern expectations on a budget, though. Currently dragon slaying in Early Access.

Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward

Official site

Genre
MMO
Release date
June 23rd 2015
What is it?
After it’s much more successful reboot, this is FF14’s first major expansion. Everything you’d expect is included – new races, areas, a higher level cap and generally MORE STUFF. Probably a reasonable jumping on point if you missed it the first time round.

Otherland

Genre
MMO
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Based on the works of sci-fi author Tad Williams, Otherworld is set inside a vast computer system. In development for many years, still relatively little is known about it, beyond it will exploit its setting to vary landscapes and setting significantly throughout.

Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade

Official site

Genre
MMO
Release date
Q4
What is it?
By the Emperor/Dark Gods it’s a Warhammer 40,000 MMO, what more could we want? Entering Early Access “soon” with a free to play option that cutely only gives access to the Orkish horde, cross your fingers it’s more successful than its fantasy brother.

EverQuest Next/Landmark

Official site

Genre
MMO, Early Access, Creative
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Nobody expected the announcement of a new Everquest to include a fully malleable world on top of the usual fantasy MMO trappings. That voxel sandbox playground is available in a beta state now while the rest continues development.

World of Diving

Official site

Genre
MMO, First-Person, Early Access
Release date
TBA
What is it?
It doesn’t aim to terrify, but World of Diving does a good enough job of simulating underwater diving that – when wearing an Oculus Rift at least – it’s been known to make some people feel uneasy. If you’re a fish out of water, you might enjoy exploring its underwater world. Of diving.

World of Warships

Official site

Genre
MMO, Simulation, Online
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Finishing the warzone triumvirate of free to play MMOs from Wargaming.net. Like its counterparts you’ll earn research and currency after each battle to upgrade your ship, increasing in tiers to keep things fair. Currently available as an invite-only beta.

Armored Warfare

Official site

Genre
MMO, Simulation, Online, Shooter
Release date
TBA
What is it?
A modern-set take on the World of Tanks formula, trading World War 2 in for sleeker armour, guided missiles and PvE in the form of missions with a group of friends. Open beta has been running for a while now, with both those missions and the large competitive battles more reminiscent of its inspiration.

Lost Ark

Official site

Genre
Action RPG, MMO
Release date
TBA
What is it?
We’re not even sure this one is going to make it to Western shores or an English translation, but figured its extreme beauty, insane set pieces and ludicrous action was worth mentioning. Seemingly starting at the power level most games end at, Lost Ark is Diablo by way of Platinum in terms of bombast and spectacle.

Lineage Eternal

Official site

Genre
Action RPG, MMO
Release date
TBA
What is it?
The latest entry in one of the oldest MMORPG series around, dating back to 1998. This is played from an Diablo-style perspective, and looks to be as screen-fillingly chaotic as the more widely known Lost Ark. An English release is meant to occur simultaneously with the Korean one, though most information so far has come out of Asian game shows.

Das Tal

Official site

Genre
MMO, Action RPG
Release date
July 2016
What is it?
Designed for the “adult gamer,” whatever that means, as a cross between the PvP of an Action RPG akin to Diablo or Path of Exile with a full on MMO. The overhead viewpoint is certainly a different take and they’re using some harsh rulesets – like having friendly fire – to ensure player skill is brought to the forefront.

Skyforge

Official site

Genre
MMORPG
Release date
TBA
What is it?
An MMO where you start at the top and just keep going up, spawning as an Immortal and rising to the point of Elder God. We’ve been posting about it for more than a couple of years and there’s a closed beta been running for some time now.

All Skyforge posts.

Trove

Official site

Genre
MMO, Creative
Release date
July 9th 2015
What is it?
Rift dev Trion Worlds has had their Minecraftish MMO in open beta since the end of 2014, but it’s getting a proper 1.0 release soon. It combines everything you’d expect from both halves of its being into one bear-fur collecting, quest completing, house building whole.

All Trove posts.

Blade & Soul

Official site

Genre
MMO
Release date
Q4
What is it?
Korean MMO that’s been making the trip westward for a long, long time. Part of the NCSoft massive, it uses real time combat based on (highly exaggerated, natch) martial arts. There’s also an anime based on it, if that’s your bag.

All Blade & Soul posts.

Crossout

Official site

Genre
MMO, Driving
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Vehicular combat MMO from the folks behind World War 2 omni-MMO War Thunder. The genre’s been tried before, many times, but not by a company with a decent track record and good funding for many moons. Expect more details at E3.
