Valve Approves Crawl’s Gabe Newell Boss Fight

Yet another occasion where I feel sad that I can't grow a beard.

Valve has granted permission for developers Powerhoof to include a godlike Gabe Newell character as playful extra in their game, Crawl [official site].

For thos in need of a little background:

A little while ago Powerhoof’s Barney Cumming posted a gif of the Valve Corporation co-founder dragonpunching a hapless fighter in Crawl – the studio’s local multiplayer dungeon crawler.

The gif ended up getting a lot of traction online and a nervous Cumming decided the best thing to do was to send Valve an email asking permission to keep Newell’s likeness in the game.

Here’s an excerpt from the explanatory email – Cumming’s main strategy is to sell the concept as a self-defence measure (the bearded incarnation is apparently Newell’s Super Saiyan form):

You will be the most powerful character in the game, effectively building a perception in Crawl players that you would be a formidable opponent in combat. This would surely reduce the desire to battle you among our players, barring edge cases in which the player is incredibly powerful himself and is looking for a worthy opponent.

Cumming now posts that Valve replied with a “short sweet email” giving the go-ahead for the character.

Full text of the email is on Powerhoof’s blog and is very amusing. link to powerhoof.com

Wait! This isn’t true. Surely the reality is that this is the character Gabe Newell is based on!

Also…Gabe takes out two knives, and makes a three hit combo. Surely, this means Half Life 3 is happening!

    (Sorry, couldnt resist)

Gabe Newell has been cosplaying as himself all along.

And this also means that Crawl is the first game to get an item in TF2 before it was released (the Gabe’s Glasses or whatever assault against alliteration it’s called).

That’s some real sweet animation on the character, well done. Especially the bouncing chins.

I love npcs that gain weapons when they power up. There’s no destiny involved, no secret genetic programming, no spy plot to find the weakness of the powerful. Just a guy who smiles, saying “My special power is KNIVES”

I assumed they’d asked for permission before hand, it’s a wee teeny bit rude to go ahead with that stunt without running it by him first tbh.

    • Ayasano says:

From the sounds of it, it wasn’t actually included in the game up until this point. The .gif was an April fools joke but then everyone decided that it would actually be a really cool character so they asked permission to add him in.

Gabe also gave me permission to use a mask of him in our game (he appears in the trailer)

Gotta love the dude (but haters gonna hate)
(We did ask for permission first. Same with TotalBiscuit, he’s also in now)

Those animations are fantastic! The still image of him reminds me of Ren & Stimpy human characters (especially the big red nose).

    The art is magnificent.
