Year Of The Bow Continues In Payday 2 Western DLC

What if The Year of the Bow never ended? Maybe this is simply the modern state of video games: they have cool bows to pling arrows at faces. E3 2012 sparked YotB declarations between games like Tomb Raider, Far Cry 3, Assassin’s Creed III, and Crysis 3 but then the bows kept coming, through Shadow of Mordor, Eidolon, and more. Bows are a thing video games just do now.

Having now received the memo, Payday 2 [official site] has added a bow. Its latest DLC weapon pack included the ole arrow-plonger, along with other Wild West weapons and masks and gubbins.

For £3.99 on Steam, The Butcher’s Western Pack gives you a Peacemaker .45 revolver, a lever-action rifle, dynamite, four melee weapons in a branding iron, a tomahawk, a pickaxe and a Bowie knife, and that bow, which can fire regular arrows or – gasp! – dynamite.

It also adds new Wild West-y masks and mask patterns and materials, and if you think I won’t hold up banks as a bandit with a cowboy hat and a bandanna over my mouth, you don’t know me at all.

Most of Payday 2’s weapon DLC packs have looked a bit boring to me, but I’m a sucker for bows and revolvers. More themed packs in future would be nice, though it’s a slippery slope to a zany goofarama. The user reviews on Steam make the weapons sound functionally not that useful compared to existing weapons though, which is a shame.

The DLC launched yesterday alongside a patch fixing crashes and bugs, as detailed in the notes.

A bow, an oversized revolver, and a chunky pump-action shotgun. That’s all I really want from an FPS. Maybe a grappling hook too. Why is that so difficult for so many games?

    Haha, no, those are completely wrong. This pack is amazing. The only bad part is the new grenade type (thrown dynamite).

    The bow is a 30 concealment weapon that is totally silent, has 50 shots at sniper rifle strength (although no penetration), benefits from ammo pickup and lets you pick your arrows back up after firing them. Its only mod adds dynamite to your arrows, which obviously make them no longer silent but gives them an AoE explosion that can one-shot Shields/kill small groups of tans, and it doesn’t reduce your ammo pool at all. It’s one of the best (if not the best) Fugitive primaries in the game right now.

    The Colt SAA is a 144 (!!!) damage revolver with a good rate of fire, reasonable ammo pool and awesome animations which is hampered by having the world’s slowest reload time, but it’s an excellent pistol Mastermind secondary that doesn’t need Ace Gunslinger to be worth using. The Winchester is a 180 damage, 90rpm sniper rifle with a 10-round magazine and a 45 round ammo pool, which makes it extremely easy to use to mow down cops.

    Actually, there are only two bad things about it: the thrown dynamite is bad, and you can’t akimbo the Colt SAA. :(

      Anyway, it’s a pretty great weapon pack. I’m not a huge fan of them charging £4 for just a handful of guns in a game that already has so many, but these are both fun and good. As always with Payday 2, it’s worth waiting 2-3 months, since the next time the game goes on sale this will be 50-70% off along with all the other DLC.

      I’d actually go as far as calling the dynamite OP.

      It can’t be shot by cops and blow up in your face, unlike the game’s frag grenades (and rockets), but is otherwise functionally identical, making it a straight upgrade.

      My guess is it’s a bug that will be hotfixed soon, but time will tell.

      What this guy just said, the new weapons are actually all pretty good. The user reviews on Steam must be from folks that never learned to aim for the head.

      Well, that’s interesting. It seems, at least with the anachronistic weapons packs, Overkill is content to divide the player base by ruining the game’s atmosphere on the one hand, and making guns like the Patchett the best in their class on the other.

        The Patchett isn’t the best in its class, it’s the one in its class that is least like its class. Basically when you want to build a secondary assault rifle (e.g. to go with a primary LMG) that thing’s your gun but when you need an SMG it’s a pretty bad choice because of the low ammo counts. For an SMG I’d rather take the Cobra or a Stryk to pump out more bullets quickly.

    They really don’t care about the game’s atmosphere. Miniguns, RPGs, bows, flamethrowers, grill forks, boxing gloves… Why?

    It’s too bad that the majority of these games do little to no research on how bows actually function, instead just making them firearms in a not-so-clever bow disguise.

I imagine that you wouldn’t be able to stand up if you are too drunk to lie down, so your options are quite limited, aren’t they?

          What would happen? Well, i would have gotten dizzy and eventually would have had to throw up.
          Aside from that i had a wide range of options from minigolf to putting on my own sock puppet kabuki, and anything in between. If curious i opted to sleep in a chair and drool abit.
