Nip/Tuck: Dreamfall Chapters Redesigns Main Characters

The art of retcon is difficult to master but in the spirit of Happy Days’ Chuck Cunningham, who disappeared up the stairs in Episode 1 and was never seen again, the developers of Dreamfall Chapters [official site] have redesigned the game’s main characters for Book Three: Realms.

The character design for Kian and Zoe has evolved over the past few installments in the series, although from the look of the latest design Kian has gone from a taught Taye Diggs to Riker from The Next Generation. Am I crazy, or is he an entirely different race now? How curious!

“Please note that this art is not final,” a post on Kickstarter reads. “Art director Christoffer will continue to tweak the art next week — but Book Three is indeed called ‘Realms’…and both Kian and Zoe have gone through some dramatic changes in the time that’s passed since the end of Book Two!”

According to the team, the third chapter of Dreamfall Chapters is ticking along nicely. The focus is now on finishing final assets, but there’s no release date just yet. In the meantime, you can check out Adam’s thoughts on the series’ last entry.

    I hate that fucking hairstyle.

      Cue: haircut DLC announcement.

    • tengblad says:

Well, aren’t you a cheerful sort! I think they both look pretty great.

Wrong kind of a hairstyle is my number one reason to stop playing a game. Second is poor fashion choices.

Well, for me pronunciation is sometimes a major reason to like a game.

    • draglikepull says:

I wouldn’t be that harsh, Kian probably has trouble finding a good barber what with his apostate status and all.

    I like that fucking hairstyle.

  3. padger says:

Chuck Cunningham was around well into season two. I believe the belief that he disappears in season one comes from an erroneous Family Guy reference.

    • Llewyn says:

If IMDb is to be believed he was only in season 1, but appeared in eleven episodes (played by two different actors).

I can’t really remember what they looked like before…

  5. HidingCat says:

Well, as long as it’s not sudden, it should be fine, but Kian really looks like someone else now.

    I don’t think character’s growing a beard and getting a hair cut counts as a retcon…

    • skittles says:

That is my problem. Horribly misleading article. The characters are not being retconned, they are CHANGING as part of the story.

  7. Orix says:

Is Chapters worth playing yet? I own it already (helped kickstart it an’ everything!) But like most episodic games I’m kind of shying away from playing it until all of the chapters have come out. Am I being silly and should I play this straight away?

Chapter 1 is decent and worth a couple hours of your time, even if all of the “THIS DECISION WILL HAVE CONSEQUENCES!’ stuff is a little embarrassing.

Chapter 2 is some ham-fisted garbage writing on the level of a self-published fanfic novella. Just atrocious.

Europolis is a brilliant Blade Runner recreation, even using sound of the same sounds. I love just spending time there, gawking at the sky.

Give us the edit function! Come on! It’s not funny anymore!

Damn. I think Zoe looks gorgeous.

    • Samwise Gamgee says:

Me to. I most definitely would.

    • manny says:

Zoe having short hair a silly choice, putting off both men and women. Look at Disney’s princesses, they all have long flowing locks, the longer the better in fact. Even Lara Croft has long hair.

Zoe’s hair is the type of hair a too cool for the patriarchy feminist would wear. Someone I don’t want to have anything to do with.

Overall I understand the devs approach given they live in feminist dystopia Norway. But if they want to appeal to a mass audience outside their nation, they should give Zoe long free flowing locks, no ponytail. (you need to compensate for the fact she doesn’t wear a dress) She is the face of their game.

      • Rocketpilot says:

Is this Manny guy for real?

        • TheLetterM says:

Well, he’s on my “probably a whackjob” block list, so sadly, they probably are.

Maybe Kian was hanging out with Nick Fury. Perhaps they were reading Captain America and Green Lantern and War Machine comics and then something shifted,

Yes, Emily, you are crazy and Kian has not changed his race. Definitely still Azadi. They’re just washed-out lighting in the promo image. Only haircuts have changed.

“Am I crazy, or is he an entirely different race now?”
Erm, nope, I don’t think you’re crazy – that’s pretty much exactly what I thought upon seeing the picture above.

  12. Smoky_the_Bear says:

They have a habit of doing that. April changed considerably between the first and second game. Different body type all together, I honestly thought she was mixed race in the first game. In Dreamfall, nope, none of those attributes present.

    It’s…it’s not helping.
