Fight! Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R On PC Today

Any time Arc System Works announce something about Guilty Gear on PC, I hope it’s them bringing the gorgeous (and ridiculously-named) Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- our way. Xrd sent the fighting game series from gorgeous hand-animated sprites to gorgeous hand-animated 3D, looking a squillion times better than Street Fighter IV. Seriously, watch this GDC talk about its style.

Anyway, no: it’s not that. Arc are still a few years behind on PC, though today they’re another step closer to caught-up with the PC release of Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R [official site].

Accent Core Plus R is the fifth version of Guilty Gear XX, benefiting from a decade of new characters and modes and moves and levels and balance tweaks and goodness knows what else. It’s got nineteen characters, eight modes, and, yes, online multiplayer.

It’ll launch through Steam tonight. After that, Arc’s PC offerings will only be behind two BlazBlue games and one pretty pretty Guilty Gear Xrd (I think? Arc have such tangles of revisions that I could be missing a dozen). Ye olde Guilty Gear X2 #Reload is half-price on Steam right now too, if you’re not a giddy goat like me bleating for the newest and shiniest. I would be so very happy if Persona 4 Arena came to PC too.

Anyway, for now, have a trailer:

  1. Dilapinated says:

XX #R is one of my alltime favourite fighting games, so I highly recommend that in the sale.

Never played Accent Core Plus. What’re people’s experiences of the differences? I can see Order Sol & That Key Goth Girl, are they the only new characters? Is the singleplayer expanded much vs XXR (as I don’t think this’ll see much online play, given the age)?

Anyway, yah, go get XXR if you want a really fun time. Blazblue Continuum Shift II is also on Steam, and probably my favourite fighting game, period. Or at least very closely tied with King of Fighters 2002UM.

    • vernon says:

Well compared to #Reload, there are 4 more characters. A.B.A., Order-Sol and the tournament legal versions of Justice and Kliff (Justice feels like a totally new character). Every character feels more complete here than they were in #Reload. Most reworked characters compared to #Reload: Slayer completely reworked, Eddie (his shadow attacks were changed, he still plays very similar though) , Zappa (his sword can now move away from him), Testament got super strong, Chipp is actually good now with strong mixup and damage, Potemkin is super strong, Ky has 100 times more options than in old Reload and got mixups, Millia’s combos reworked (still plays similarly to #R Millia), Robo-Ky has got even more complicated, lower damage now, but with super fun gimmicks… Just off the top of my head.

  2. zentropy says:

Horey smokes, I almost choked on my coffee, this is the most unexpected greatest of news! It even looks like they’ll let europeans participate this time around. :3

Add to that that I’ve been on the verge of buying Xrd the past few days to scratch that GG itch, but not keeping the PS4 around for much longer so the timing of this is just excellent. While Xrd is sure a beauty to look at, this is still the superior version (those sprites son).

Now let’s just hope they don’t botch the netcode…

  3. SominiTheCommenter says:

How in god’s name do you even read “Xrd”?
    Exhurd? Tenerd?
    X Windowing System remote desktop?

    • welverin says:

      throat warbler mangrove

p.s. I had no idea where that originated from until just now. I just remember i from a poll on EN World for how people pronounce Drow.

    • MykulJaxin says:

Here. I don’t remember where I read this originally, though.

    • vahnn says:

      X = Ten
      rd = urd
      Xrd – en = Turd

      • Jalan says:

Read the comments looking for a turd joke, found one, was not at all disappointed.

        Well done.

    • Ringwraith says:

This is the problem when you name your sequels with increasing numbers of X’s and then get to the third, and realise XXX is not a good idea.

    • vernon says:

      Exhurd. More or less.

They didn’t want to name their game XXX.

  4. Terics says:

This is pretty cool since it was(or is depending on who you ask) the fan favorite Guilty Gear and the was the most current game until Xrd. Its also published by Acr Sys themselves, unlike their other games on steam.

    • pepperfez says:

ArcSys are making noises like they’ve come around on Steam and will actually keep it up-to-date-ish, which makes me indescribably happy. Besides Xrd, I’m really hoping for (Content Warning: Anime Titles) Under-Night In-Birth EXE: Late, which appears to be one of the most intelligently designed fighting games out there.

  5. Freud says:

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R might be the most awesome name for a game in the history of computer games.

    • Lars Westergren says:

Arc must pick names like Dadaistic poetry. Just put lots of words on pieces of paper, put in a tophat, shake and ask some one in the audience to draw and read aloud.

“Our next game is called Fridge Concrete: Reverse Car Tree Painter” *polite applause*

      • vernon says:

Guilty Gear XX is a series with titles XX, XX #Reload, XX Slash, XX Accent Core. It kinda made sense, cause there weren’t totally new titles, but careful balancing of the competitive gameplay. The Accent Core Plus was a new console edition of Accent Core with added single player content and story. And the R version had balance changes to Accent Core, but not so many changes to totally deserve a new title (altough kinda close). The community shortens it to ACR.

  6. vahnn says:

Has anyone picked it up yet? I’m dying to hear how the performance is for online multiplayer. I’M DYING TO KNOW!

    • tintinmayo says:

Prepare to die! People are reporting a positive experience with netplay. link to

      • Wedge says:

People on steam forums have said things like King of Fighters had OK netcode on PC, when it was total garbage. The only people that ever say that have both don’t know how to play the games and have never played them offline with people. Which I mean, if you fall into that category too, it’s probably fine for you, but that doesn’t mean it’s good.

It’s a port of the console versions which had garbage online, so you can be assured the PC version isn’t going to be magically better other than by virtue of better connections to the system running the game.

  7. edwardh says:

LOL I guess Gatsu got nothing on Kliff…
(I never played this game but when I saw the screenshot, I was like “Wtf?!”)
