Land Ho! Arma III South Pacific Expansion Leaked

Forget Big Brother, the real gods of surveillance are ardent fans. A keen-eyed dude(ette) over at the Bohemia Interactive forums recently shared a shocking geographical discovery: a new South Pacific island has been spotted in the waters of Arma III [official site]. It seems a new expansion will be announced real soon.

Well, maybe. The incriminating videos have since been either a) taken down or b) made private. And even the forum poster who spotted it has removed what they saw. But we saw what they saw before they pulled it down, and Bohemia’s webserver still has screenshots with give-away names like ‘arma3_tanoa_screenshot_02.jpg‘. Anyway, here’s the text that poster Smiley Nick says they copied and pasted from Bohemias’s blog post about the landmass itself:

“Situated in the South Pacific, the island province of Tanoa is one of many that, together, compose the Horizon Islands – an independent island nation with historic ties to both East and West. Formerly an outpost belonging to the Empire of Japan, before its liberation by US Marines in 1944, evidence of a long history of conflict and turmoil can still be found dotted across the island – relics from times long-since passed.

“Nowadays, Tanoa thrives off rich deposits of rare earth metals exported the world over, but controversy and civil unrest have long surrounded these efforts due to the perceived social, economic and environmental impacts of their exploitation. Tanoa is also believed to be a hub of illicit trafficking in the Pacific, but no formal charges have ever been raised.

“In 2035, Tanoa continues to enjoy a prolonged period of apparent peace and prosperity, but the volatile geopolitical situation on the world’s stage threatens to destabilize the region, and plunge it into darkness once more.”

But here’s the more important bit. If all this is true, it appears as though there’s going to be an entire expansion released in the first half of 2016, one that will include “new vehicles, weapons, attachments and gear, characters, playable content, and more.”

Shiny! I always loved the user made Island of Lingor. The jungle terrain was amazing, so an officially supported jungle island could be good for some fun missions.

    • FullMetalMonkey says:

During the Operation Flashpoint days there was a Vietnam mod my clan used to create and run missions on with extremely vegitated jungles. I can’t remember what it was called but it was awesome although it used to kill our frame rates due to its ‘photo-realism’.

Can’t ever forget starting a mission with Flight of the Valkyries blaring out of our squadrons of helicopters and being dropped into the ‘Nam.

      • NeoArmageddon says:

It was probably Unsung Mod and SEB’s Ia Drang Valley map (later forked by Unsung): link to

        • FullMetalMonkey says:

La Drang. That was it! Thanks dude. That sent a massive flood of memories running down the lane. I can’t remember the name of the mod we used because we used to have our own executable installer for the mods on our server which would automatically download any mods we were missing. But it probably was Unsung.

  2. Gap Gen says:

    Damn, that looks purdy.

  3. sventoby says:

Can the AI see through foliage in 3? I seem to remember that being the case in 2.

    • heretic says:

I’m pretty sure they can’t in 3, however I still think they are too good at spotting from really far away, like camo doesn’t make much difference I think – I’m prone looking at the horizon unable to see anything in the terrain but somehow the AI hidden so far away can still see me :(

      • heretic says:

I’ll add that this is why I prefer close range engagements in 3, the AI can be lethal (and a bit stupid at times), but I find it more fun than long range

    • Jane Doe says:

Players can see through ArmA 3 foliage just fine if they stand like five meters away from you. Why shouldn’t the AI be able to?

Will be interesting if the new island will be as lifeless and deserted as the old Altis. Empty buildings and all, like after a nuclear apocalypse with leprechauns.

    • El_MUERkO says:

They can, and they can track you while you flank them in total cover, BIS just fudge their aim when you are shootable.

I love BIS but the lack of a 64 bit truly multi-threaded executable means ARMA3’s performance is dire and the AI are idiot savant’s, thank jebus for Sa Matra Wasteland.

    • NeoArmageddon says:

They can see through fallen trees most of the time. So unless you knock over trees all the time, you will be fine :P
But looking at the dev branch it seems like BIS is working on the AI vision and LOS.

  4. protorp says:

Getting a strong Just Cause vibe from those pics. And thus being made sad by the thought of the it’ll never happen idea of the good bits of JC2 remade in the ARMA3 engine…

  5. SuicideKing says:

Still not enough funds to make female character models, I’m sure. ¬_¬

    • slerbal says:

yeah, that really does my head in. Stratis and Altis are the islands of only men. Feels so odd, just like the empty housing. Can give the whole game the feel of a film set, and not in a good way.

        Mikemcn says:

That’s weird, i never thought about the fact that there were no women but now it seems so obvious and absurd. Especially for a game set in the near future where women would be even more common in the military as we get more equal.

        Fix your nonsense BI.

        • shadybearfaced says:

Their justification for not doing it is pretty understandable tbh. It would take a lot of time and money which they would rather invest in something else like new content.

    • MrCrun says:

      Bloody HELL, that comments thread…
Really want to take a F.E.A.R spear gun to some of those people.

      • SuicideKing says:

Worst is BIS edited the original ticket, removing most if not all the research work one LadyBecky had done to prove that women should be included in a military…”simulator”.

And I stopped reading that thread long ago… :|

  6. Hitchslapped says:

I don’t even want to know how much this will cost. When looking at their ridiculous helicopter shit or weapon DLC (weapons that should have been included right off the bat) they released I fear for the worst.

    • P.Funk says:

You fear that they will produce an enormous island along with a large quantity of content and will charge for it? Oh the humanity… in this day and age no less.

    • Thirith says:

Reducing the DLCs to weapons and helicopters isn’t exactly fair or accurate; there have been major changes to the systems underlying helicopter flight, shooting, sound propagation. The thing is just that most of those advances were rolled out to the entire community, in order not to split it – but that has led to people complaining that there wasn’t enough content in the DLCs. In effect, those who bought the DLC also paid for the community. I can see why people would complain about this, but I very much prefer it to the option where the community is split and people who own the DLC can’t really play with those who don’t and vice versa.

      • Hitchslapped says:

Major changes to underlying systems like shooting, flight and sound were called a “patch” a couple of years back.

        • soulis6 says:

Sorry, but no. A few years ago (and still now for most games), the model was to ‘patch’ for a few months after release, mostly bug fixes, and then abandon it for the next game in the series. Arma 3 has had over 2 solid years of improvements, and not just bug fixes, but major gameplay changing additions.

BIS has provided some of the best and most generous support and DLC around, and you’re kidding yourself if you think otherwise. If this was most other companies we’d get 5 community splitting ‘map packs’ sold at $15 a pop for a few months, no gameplay or feature improvements or additions ever, and then they’d be moving on to the next installment.

        • Chiron says:

No they were called an Expansion Pack, often for 1/3rd to 1/2 the price of the original. If you were lucky and they weren’t full priced games.

  7. TMA says:

Tropical islands? Now if only they add wintery forest and mountains, I don’t have to play another ever again.

    • shadybearfaced says:

Don’t forget a dessert island for the complete modern military experience!

Oh, and a desert map would be cool too, like some middle eastern war type of thing.

    • NeoArmageddon says:

If you want wintery forests and mountains, you can download AiA Terrain pack (or CUP TP) and Thrisk Island for A2 ;)

    • Chiron says:

Winter War mod? Cos that’d be awesome… although given the AI’s shooting ability in ArmA games it’d be like fighting two armies of nothing but Simo Häyhä

  8. SlimShanks says:

I’m still waiting for the DLC weapons to be balanced. I quickly tired of having nothing to do in multiplayer because the guy with the Navid already killed everything singlehandedly…
